Appalachian fiddle music, based on the musical traditions of the people who settled in the mountainous regions of the southeastern United States, is widely-known and played throughout North America and parts of Europe because of its complex rhythms, its catchy melodies, and its often-ancient-sounding stylistic qualities. The authors explore the lives and music of 43 of the classic Appalachian fiddlers who were active during the first half of the 20th century. Some of them were recorded commercially in the 1920s, such as Gid Tanner, Fiddlin? John Carson, and Charlie Bowman. Some were recorded by folklorists from the Library of Congress, such as William Stepp, Emmett Lundy, and Marion Reece. Others were recorded informally by family members and visitors, such as John Salyer, Emma Lee Dickerson, and Manco Sneed. All of them played throughout most of their lives and influenced the growth and stylistic elements of fiddle music in their regions. Each fiddler has been given a chapter with a biography, several tune transcriptions, and tune histories. To show the richness of the music, the authors make a special effort to show the musical elements in detail, but also acknowledge that nothing can take the place of listening. Many of the classic recordings used in this book can be found on the web, allowing you to hear and read the music together.

Late in his life, composer J. Rosamond Johnson (Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing) submitted to his longtime publisher, E.B. Marks, a list of songs that would comprise a volume of his best early popular songs written with his pre-1910 partner Bob Cole and his brother, James Weldon Johnson (Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man). That list was never put into print...until now. Featuring an introductionby Dr. Thomas Riis (Just Before Jazz) and several rare photos, this new compilation is the latest legacy offering from the Marks archive, which contains a rich heritage of turn-of-the-century African-American, and thus distinctly American, pre-jazz-era popular song. Includes: Ain't Dat Scan'lous * Big Indian Chief * The Big Red Shawl * The Bleeding Moon * Congo Love Song * The Countess of Alagazam * Fishing * I Don't Want to Be No Actor Man No Mo' * I'll Always Love Old Dixie * I'll Keep a Warm Spot in My Heart for You * I've Got Troubles of My Own * The Katy-Did, the Cricket and the Frog * Lazy Moon * Lit'l Gal * Louisiana Lize * Lovely Daughter of Allah * Ma Mississippi Belle * The Maiden with the Dreamy Eyes * Mudder Knows * My Heart's Desiah is Miss Mariah * My Castle on the Nile * Nobody's Lookin' but de Owl an' de Moon * Oh, Didn't He Ramble * The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground * On the Road to Monterey * The Pathway of Love * Roll Them Cotton Bales * Save It for Me! * The Spirit of the Banjo! * Sugar Babe * Two Eyes * Under the Bamboo Tree * When de Jack O'Lantern Starts to Walk About * When It's All Goin' Out, and Nothin' Comin' In * Who Do You Love?

Endless Fascination brings together Thomas Pitfield’s most significant autobiographical writings, new critical essays reappraising his work, and the recollections of family, friends, pupils and colleagues. It is illustrated with portraits, musical examples and over 100 reproductions of his art and craft works, supplemented by a CD of music by the composer and his acquaintances.Thomas Pitfield (1903-1999) was born in Bolton, Lancashire, into a conventional and narrow-minded working-class family. Drawn to music and driven by a compelling urge to compose, he overcame initial setbacks and lived according to principles he worked out for himself, maintaining a modest and honest lifestyle directed by the precepts of vegetarianism and pacifism, and keeping faith with his innate gifts to make a living and a home for himself and his like-minded wife Alice. He became a notable and prolific composer who enjoyed numerous performances and broadcasts of his works, especially in the North West region of England, some by leading artists such as John Barbirolli, Vilém Tauský, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, John McCabe, and Ronald Stevenson. His music, often written for specific occasions or performers, was typically light-hearted and small-scale, with frequent reference to folk-music; larger-scale pieces included two piano concertos, concertos for violin, cello and recorder, and more than a dozen stage works. He was also an artist, craftsman and poet (with an enthusiasm for nonsense verse), whose work reflects the revival of interest in the arts and crafts during the first half of the 20th century. Running as a thread though everything he did was his unswerving love for the natural world and in particular the beauty of trees.

Selected songs spanning 50 years demonstrating Pitfield's distinctive voice, to be cherished for its precision of technique and delicacy of effect. John McCabe writes if Pitfield had written only the first song in the book, Cuckoo and Chestnut Time, he would have earned our gratitude for that perfect little gem alone! Also contains the composer's own illustrations. Thomas Pitfield had the gift for memorable tunes, often couched in somewhat French-sounding harmonic and decorative idiom. He admired Vaughan Williams, Grainger and Delius and their influence can be felt in his works.

13 specially commissioned pieces which aim to breathe new life into a largely neglected component of the GCSE/Key Stage 4 Music syllabus, Ensemble Performance. On Track comes complete with a CD-Rom containing all the parts for all the pieces and transpositions for any instrument, and these parts come with a licence for printing as many copies as needed, directly from the CD-Rom. A separate 'audio' CD also contains recordings of every piece. The book contains scores for each piece and extended notes by the composers to aid in the preparation of the music: there are 5 pieces for fixed ensembles and 8 pieces for flexible ensembles. The editor of the compilation, Sadie Harrison, comments: Playing in an ensemble with one's peers is perhaps the most rewarding and satisfying thing to do as a young performer, and it is crucial to nurture this element of GCSE courses to reflect this. On Track is a fantastic collection of many different styles, approaches and sounds. There is something in here for everybody, at whatever level, and on whatever instrument. This is what GCSE Music teachers are crying out for, and finally here is something that really hits the mark. Harrison's comments are echoed by recent examiners' reports from EdExcel, one of the largest examiners of GCSE music. They describe how the music they heard in examinations demonstrated 'an extreme range of standards and revealed evidence of the very wide range of instruments in use'. The AQA (Assessment and Qualification Alliance) Examiners' report in 2004 warns schools against allowing their students to present solo music with a piano accompaniment played by a teacher or with a CD accompaniment for the ensemble performance component. It continues, saying that it is of utmost importance that the chosen ensemble allows the candidate to show rapport with the other player(s). This is a significant requirement with which many [examination] centres did NOT comply. Fixed Ensembles Sadie Harrison — On the run!for clarinet in Bb, violin, 'cello, piano Ed Hughes — Matthew's Mazurkafor piano duet Jeremy Dale Roberts — 'Takes three...' for trumpet, 'cello, piano Matthew Roddie — Gone Clubbin' for violin, 'cello Thomas Simaku — From Across the Sea for 2 flutes, clarinet in Bb Flexible Ensembles David Blake — Piece for Luis and Justin for four instruments Anthony Gilbert — U-GO for Arirang for four instruments Jo Kondo — A Birthday Toast for any number of instruments David Lumsdaine — A tree dances for Orpheus for three instruments Paul Mealor — Swing Slow for two instruments Robert Saxton — There and Back for three instruments John Stringer — Duo for two instruments Lu s Tinoco — Diversion for four instruments.
