Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy as letter-writer: at the heart of 19th century European cultureAs one of the most important letter-writers of the 19th century, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy maintained an extensive correspondence. With great style and eloquence he wrote letters to friends and family, letters from his travels and he also wrote to leading composers, musicians, artists as well as publishers. He corresponded with famous contemporaries such as Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner as well as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Carl Friedrich Zelter and Alexander von Humboldt. The correspondence begins in 1816 and ends in 1847 with the composer’s death. These letters are invaluable documents shedding light not only on the genesis, publication and revision of his musical works, but also on a period when relations between Christians and Jews still had a chance to become harmonious, as Moses Mendelssohn, the imminent scholar and grandfather of the composer had advocated. This edition will therefore be of great interest far beyond the circles of musicologists and music specialists. It will appeal to those who are interested in the history of culture and ideas and to those who perceive Mendelssohn and his family as representatives of a unique, diverse cultural epoch. The complete correspondence shows that Mendelssohn not only went on to become one of the leading figures of German musical culture in the 1840s, but that he also maintained a network of musical contacts throughout Europe. The edition of the complete lettersThis scholarly-critical complete edition comprises 5,855 letters by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Previously only a small part of his correspondence had been published and made accessible to the public. The complete edition is based on Mendelssohn letters which have been compiled over decades by Rudolf Elvers as well as on international research carried out by an academic workgroup in Leipzig spearheaded by chief editors Helmut Loos and Wilhelm Seidel. They determined 500 additional letters hitherto unknown. Versions of the letter texts have been compiled from a scholarly-critical analysis of the sources, their historical context has been discussed and comments on all points in need of explanation have been made. This edition of the complete letters consists of 12 volumes and a CD-ROM. Each volume contains indices of mentioned individuals and institutions, compositions by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Fanny Hensel as well as a register of place names and currencies. In this way one obtains an all-encompassing view of this unique historical cosmos. The Complete edition has been produced to the highest standards in terms of layout, cover and binding. It is an ideal collector’s item for bibliophiles, providing an excellent means for studying the composer and the period in which he lived. The CD-ROM forms a valuable addition to the printed volumes. It offers the complete printed edition in the form of pdf. files, thereby making its approximately 9,500 pages digitally accessible and enabling letters and the corresponding commentary to be read in parallel. All terms can be located quickly and conveniently via a full text search.(The 12 volumes as well as the CD-ROM can only be purchased complete).- German text onlyThe EditorsHelmut Loos is Professor of Musicology at the University of Leipzig. He specialises in the music of the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular the reception of Beethoven, sacred music and links between Germany and Central and Eastern Europe. Wilhelm Seidel was professor at the universities of Heidelberg, Marburg and Leipzig. His publications are devoted to the temporal structure of music, music aesthetics in the 18th and 19th centuries and music of the 16th to 20th centuries, currently on Mozart and Mendelssohn.

This SSAA work, originally written for SATB voices celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Masterworks Community Chorale in Newnan, Georgia. The inspirational text is Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, a text by the Yale Theologian, Thomas Troeger. Somewhere I Have Never Traveled has potential for building tone and creating a panorama of colors, while at the same time creating emotional soundscapes, all through a delightful text that creates a dreamlike innocence. It has been a joy to re-voice this original SATB composition for SSAA voices and to collaborate with Heather Orr at Montgomery High School. In July 2014, my dear friend Kathy Bizarth commissioned me to compose a new work celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Masterworks Community Chorale in Newnan, Georgia. It was in September when we agreed on the inspirational text, Somewhere I Have Never Traveled, a text by the Yale Theologian, Thomas Troeger. I moved to Italy in January for a sabbatical, and in February, I spent four days composing the piece at the Palazzo Bassi Brugnatelli, a dear friend's villa in Robbiate, Italy. Interestingly enough, the middle part of the piece (mm. 30-39) and end of the piece came first (mm. 40-62). Completed in Conegliano in late February, this composition is very special to me as it was the first composition I wrote after my mother died, and it was also composed for a dear friend. I have a profound connection to what I hope will be a deeply inspirational composition to those who sing it. Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. When he finished the work's revelatory finale, he signed it Hallelujah, and reported enthusiastically, The Finale is the most significant movement of my life. Following the premiere performance, a peer composer penned, Its success was almost without precedent. It was the absolute victory of light over darkness. This work leaps to life with awe-inspiring power in this first-ever setting for string orchestra with optional timpani. Transposed from its original key of C minor/major to D minor/major, the music sits nicely for all parts, ready for any concert or festival. The conductor should encourage students to vary the bow lanes, weight, and speed to produce powerful forte and expressive piano dynamics. Encourage mature players to make expressive fingering choices and to use vibrato. Students should practice coloring the tone and intensity through bowing lanes, variable bow weight, and appropriate bow speeds.Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. Duration: full evening Text by the composer using a text by Walter Jens Place and time: Chamber of the King Philip V. of Spain, Middle of the 18th Century Characters: Farinelli (Countertenor/alto) - King Philip V. of Spain (baritone) - Nicola Porpora (baritone) - The Kings Personal Physician, also Barber (tenor) - The Kings Confessor, also Impresario and Priest (bass) - Maria (Bellino), later Anna Maria Strada (soprano) - Georg Friedrich Handel (baritone) - Jenny, Jim, John, English Opera Troupe (soprano, tenor, baritone) - The young Carlo Broschi (boy treble) The dramaturgical constellation of the subject forced me to use multifaceted and stylistic means. I have used melodic segments from the Farinelli arias that are still extant today, as well as other Baroque vocal and formal elements, models inspired by the Singspiel and the musical, and even a rap piece over a techno rhythm. The musical center of the opera consists of song and the human voice. Farinelli is a bel canto opera. (Siegfried Matthus) Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, was the brightest star among the castrato tenors of the 18th century. Handels enemies brought him to London so that he could outshine Handels singers. Here, Matthus depicts Farinelli at the Spanish court, ruled by the pathologically melancholy King Philip V. In a review of his life, we relive important stages in the career of the singer, who lived outside of the norm and found his home in the fascinating twilight world between art and artificiality.World premiere: Netzeband, July 12, 1997.

The Travel Preludes are three short pieces ideally conceived for opening a concert. The first, Urgent Call, is like a bell calling the audience and stressing the importance - and at times the urgency - of making music. The second prelude, The Art of Taking a Seat, has to do with that carefulness, kindness and attention the attendance of a concert requires from the audience. Because to take a seat, to concentrate and to open heart and mind to the music is an art everybody should practice. The third piece, In Praise of Discretion, is an homage to all those musicians, who enter the stage without pretensions or theatrics, being able to concentrate on nothing but the music itself. (Nicola Campogrande, July 2021 ). The Haffner symphony was composed at the request of Leopold Mozart for the celebrations at the ennoblement of Wolfgang’s childhood friend, Sigmund Haffner, in Salzburg on 29 July 1782. Mozart was under considerable pressure at this time with, amongst other professional commitments, preparations for the opening performance of Die Entfühtung aus dem Serail on 16 July, and the necessary arrangements for his forthcoming marriage to Constanze on 4 August. It is unclear from the surviving evidence (the relevant correspondence between Wolfgang and Leopold at this period is incomplete) whether the symphony arrived at Salzburg in time for the Haffner celebrations. The symphony was first performed in Vienna, under Mozart’s direction, at the Hofburgtheater on 23 March 1783 in the presence of the Emperor.

Passchendaele, is a small village five miles north-east of Ypres. The 3rd Battle of Ypres was fought here... On 18 July 1917 the Allied troops began a heavy ten day bombardment before the main attack; 3,000 guns fired over 4 million shells. The battle commenced on the 31st of July, and stretched on until November the 10th, 1917. Heavy rain began on the day of attack, producing thick mud, which caked uniforms and clogged rifles; It became so deep that men, horses and pack mules drowned in it. The Germans, who had used chlorine gas in the 2nd Battle of Ypres, now used mustard gas which inflicted chemical burns. The offensive resulted in gains for the Allies, but it was not the great breakthrough that was hoped for; The Allies suffered 310,000 casualties, the Germans 260,000. Just south west of the village of Passchendaele is the Cemetery and Memorial - Tyne Cot. It is the resting place of 11,954 Commonwealth soldiers and is the largest Commonwealth military cemetery in the world. The Tyne Cot Memorial is a long wall which carries the names of 34,863 British soldiers who have no known grave. Pals battalions became synonymous with the towns of northern Britain; Men enlisted because they could serve alongside their friends, relatives and workmates.

Adler's milestone String Quartet No. 10 was composed for the Cassatt String Quartet for performance at the Bowdoin International Music Festival's 50th Anniversary season in 2014. Built in a single movement of contrasting sections, Adler's 10th will continue to be featured in upcoming concerts by the Cassatt Quartet, including a performance in Beijing in July. The String Quartet No. 10 was written in 2013 for the 50th anniversary of the Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival and is dedicated to the Cassatt Quartet who premiered the work during the 50th anniversary celebration in July 2014.  The work was written with a generous grant from the Fromm Music Foundation. The 10th String Quartet is in one continuous movement but divided into four sections.  The first section is a slow introduction which presents the basic harmonic material of the entire work.  This is suddenly interrupted by a very agitated movement forming a great contrast to the calm of the beginning.  This rhythmic drive comes to a stop and is relieved by the third section which is a variation of the beginning, but is a bit longer and more developed.  This is followed by the final section which again captures the agitation of the second section and brings the work to a wild and most aggressive end.—Samuel Adler.

The cantata Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz BWV 136 was composed in Bach's first year as Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig and was first performed on the 8th Sunday after Trinity, the 18th July 1723. The librettist is unknown. The title of the cantata is taken from verse 23 of Psalm 139: Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz; prufe mich und erfahre, wie ich's meine. (Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts) The opening chorus forms an extended fugue, framed by string writing bursting with energy. The obbligato horn accentuates and enriches the movement with a special tonal color. The alto aria in F sharp minor (movement 3) comprises a trio movement with an oboe d'amore as solo instrument in a contrasting range - a presto middle section which dramatically charges the words Denn seines Eifers Grimm vernichtet (For the fury of its zeal will destroy). In the duet (movement 5) the text is sung by tenor and bass line by line, sometimes imitating contrapuntally, and sometimes both singing together dramatically in homophonic writing. A simple chorale setting to the melody Auf meinen lieben Gott concludes the cantata. Particularly charming here is the violin which joins the four vocal parts as an independent part.

A grand arrangement of this highly patriotic theme is sure to bring pride to your ensemble. The familiar verse can be used as a sing-along if desired. The craft of this particular arrangement is that endurance and range has been carefully considered ensuring a dramatic close to a program while not overwhelming any one section of your band. Full of emotion, a certain winner!

Handel's Utrecht Jubilate HWV 279 enthralled London audiences right from its first performance, and it continues to do so today in concert halls and churches all over the world, thanks to the wide range of occasions when it can be performed. It was performed for the first time in a festive service on 7 July 1713 at St. Paul's Cathedral to celebrate the Peace marking the end of the twelve year-long War of the Spanish Succession. The Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate were Handel's first sacred works in English and important milestones at the beginning of his London career. The edition is based on Handel's autograph (which unfortunately does not survive) and on a copy from Handel's circle, which in some respects provides more information than the autograph and contains important details for this edition. In 1717 Handel revised the Jubilate in a smaller scoring for the ensemble at Cannons (HWV 246) and preceded it with a two-part Sinfonia which is also reproduced in the Appendix to this edition. The chorus is mainly scored in four parts, and is in eight parts in just one short movement. In two other movements the soprano part divides. The second alto solo part can also be sung by a high tenor.Score available separately - see item CA.5527900.

Inspired by the French Romantic and Impressionist traditions, my romances for fute and piano, composed during late July and early August 1984, was carefully conceived for the marvelous lyrical and technical gifts of Robert Stallman and Richard Goode, to whom the work is warmly dedicated. All three Romances, although brief in duration, unfold with a sense of large gesture and design. The first Romance is in 3/4 time and flows generally in the manner of a lyrical waltz with occasional turbulent interruptions. The second Romance is in 4/4 time, unfolding in a stately Baroque-like manner, and the third Romance is in 2/4 time, melodically expansive and often tempestuous. All three Romances strive to honor the goals of traditional performance practice while, at the same time, they create an energy and drama of modernity and contemporary richness. And for these goals I am indebted to so many of the most outstanding performers and conductors of our time with whom I have worked and from whom I have learned much– those who have demonstrated the importance of preserving in addition to further developing those significant natural attributes of musical expression and traditional performance practice which are so often ignored in contemporary compositional values. — William Thomas McKinleyFlute & Piano Duration: 14' Composed: 1984 Published by: Notevole Music Publishing.

Five Pieces for Violin and Orchestra was commissioned by Frederick Grinke and completed on 20 December 1961. The BBC Symphony Orchestra with Frederick Grinke (violin) and conducted by the composer, gave the first performance on 31 July 1962 at the Royal Albert Hall, London during the BBC Proms season. This work is so constructed that each piece is complete in itself and can be played separately, while at the same time the whole set of five constitutes a structural unit. A basic motif consisting of a rising semitone followed by a falling tone, and its inversion plays an important part in every piece. Thus the first piece, which is of a slow and meditative character, begins with this theme in the bass. It is also heard in the first entry of the solo part, and thereafter every episode is in some way derived from it. The next piece, a vigorous and strongly marked 'allegro', uses the semitone of the original figure as its starting point. A second theme appears, first on the horns and is later taken up by the solo violin, while a third section has the initial idea as its accompaniment. Next comes an extended scherzo in free form very closely based on initial motif. The fourth is a purely melodic piece containing allusions in its middle section to the basic figure. Here the strings only are used for accompaniment. In the first section, violas and cellos are divided in the middle section, and all the strings are used in the last, which is otherwise an almost exact repetition of the opening. The Finale is a lighter movement than the others, concerned mainly with giving the soloist material for display, but not unconnected with what has gone before.
