Mozart composed his two â??Lodron Serenadesâ? for open-air performances on the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron in June 1776 and 1777. Their bright â??al frescoâ? character is immediately recognisable. Alfred Einstein considered these two divertimentos to be â??among the purest, gayest, most satisfying, and most perfect that ever assumed musical formâ?.For both works Mozart chose an ensemble of two horns, two violins, viola and bass instruments. However, the second Lodron Serenade, the Divertimento in B-flat major K. 287, stands out from this sextet format by assigning a remarkably virtuosic solo role to the first violin, from the richly diverse opening movement to the finale with its almost ironic recitative and an exhilarating passage on the folk song â??Dâ??Bäurin hat dâ??Katz verlornâ?. Mozart himself played first violin in the 1777 performance. Later he wrote, â??They all opened their eyes! I played as though I were the finest fiddler in all Europeâ?.

This opening piece was commissioned by a youth orchestra, which explains why it has such a lot of dynamism, energy and optimism. However, it begins in a stately and noble fashion, in the lower range of the wind orchestra. Soon the rhythmical drive takes over, imbuing this piece with a vibrant and energetic character. Some lovely melodic lines and themes are also integrated within this fast section. Wind music in Croatia is developing apace as more and more ensembles are excited by the next generation of composers finding so much success worldwide. For this reason, the Vatroslav Lisinski Music School commissioned this short but effective piece from Jan Van der Roost. The premièretook place in Zagreb on April 24 2013, conducted by Mario Komazin.

BachScholar Editions Vol. 80: J.S. BACH: Sinfonia from Cantata 29: Etude on One Staff with Two Hands (5 pages) presents a unique and accessible transcription of Bach’s exciting Sinfonia from Cantata 29, which Bach reworked from his previously composed Preludio from Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin. The present edition notates Bach’s original solo in the treble clef played with alternating hands: stems up = R.H. and stems down = L.H. Sharing the solo between the two hands results in a difficulty half that of romantic, virtuoso transcriptions that add chords and accompaniment material in the bass clef. This unique transcription offers pianists Grades 5 and up a fun and rewarding study which fosters evenness of touch and tone and explores innovative fingerings and hand crossings. This transcription of Bach’s exciting Sinfonia from Cantata 29 has something for everyone — piano students, teachers, and concert artists alike! Published by: BachScholar.

A Musical Portrait In 2012 Nicola Campogrande received a rather singular commission when a total stranger asked him to compose a musical portrait of his fiancee. The man knew exactly what he wanted: a concerto for piano and orchestra. After some reflection, Campogrande realised that he would be able to paint with music. It would never be possible, of course, to recognise the shape of the woman's face or the colour of her hair, but the score could evoke the way in which she occupied space and time, and the different movements of the composition would be like the faces on a rotating prism. Campogrande thus accepted the commission and the stranger sent him a few photos of his fiancee, spoke to him about her and, finally, introduced him to her. This is how R (A portrait for piano and orchestra) was born, first performed in April 2013 by Lilya Zilberstein with the Orchestra Verdi in Milan. Subsequently, following other performances and a TV documentary, a number of different pianists asked Campogrande to write a version for solo piano. Hence Nudo emerged, a piece that would be very similar to R, were it not for the fact that, as the title suggests, the pianist is naked, without orchestral clothing.
