The title of Esa Pietilä’s solo harpsichord work Fata morgana (2019) refers to a special weather con-dition, which creates illusory effect of mirage-like fairy castle-like monuments in the horizon of the sea. The piece brings forth the frightening bass sonority on double manual, full size harpsichord and the brightness on the treble and makes a dialogue out of them. “I got fasci-nated by the sonority, character and power of the low register sound on the instrument, es-pecially when used in non-traditional way and found some kind of especially delightful and outlandish cluster-mud and airy glimmering things which seem to play together, the com-poser describes. The challenges of the piece lie in rhythmical ideas, which are surprisingly multi-faceted and in the short, improvised section.

Esa Pietilän soolo-cembalolle tehdyn sävellyksen otsikko Fata morgana (2019) viittaa erityisen sääil-miön aiheuttamaan illusatoriseen kangastuksen tapaiseen efektiin, joka tuo esiin satulinnojen kaltaisten rakennelmien ilmaantumisen meren horisonttiin. Sävellys tuo esiin cembalon bas-sorekisterin pelottavuuden sekä diskantin kirkkauden ja käy niillä vuoropuhelua. Haltioiduin cembalon alarekisterin erityisestä soinnista, karakteerista ja voimasta, jos sitä käyttää hyvinkin ei-perinteisesti. Löysin myös erityisen hauskasti soivaa klusteri-mutaa ja ilmavaa kimallusta, jotka sointuvat yhteen, Pietilä kuvaa sävellystään. Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radiobroadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. The playfully inventive cycle for voice, piano and string quartet, dedicated to his “dear wife” Martha, brings together short compositions written in 1937-40. “These are,” says Schmid, “12 small pieces in a wide variety of instrumentation and different forms - some of them twelve-tone pieces, some of them in a technique that comes close. An attempt to write music that is technically easier to perform.” The arch-like overall form combines folksong-like vocal numbers on text from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” with solo pieces, quartet movements and counterpoint art on the name of “BACH” and expresses Schmid's view of music in a subtly personal way.

Ode to Manana was written especially for the 26th International Mananan Festival of Music and the Arts. Cast in tonally modified sonata form, the work is inspired by some of the numerous folk traditions surrounding Mananan, and by some older Manx folk music little remembered today. The work also exists in a version for recorder, string orchestra and harp.
