La Libertà is the most original, and among the most attractive, of Maurice Greene’s secular vocal compositions on Italian texts. Strong circumstantial evidence indicates that he wrote it as a composition for the celebrated operatic singer Faustina Bordoni to sing as a grateful farewell to her English patrons and admirers just before her final departure from London in the summer of 1728. The song commemorates not only Faustina but also her constant companion and reputed lover, the violinist Mauro d’Alay, who is likely to have been the original player of the obbligato violin part with which the vocal part interweaves. Greene took the text from an Italian translation of A Letter from Italy, a famous poem by Joseph Addison extolling liberty, which was at the time seen as a distinguishing characteristic of England.

Appalachian fiddle music, based on the musical traditions of the people who settled in the mountainous regions of the southeastern United States, is widely-known and played throughout North America and parts of Europe because of its complex rhythms, its catchy melodies, and its often-ancient-sounding stylistic qualities. The authors explore the lives and music of 43 of the classic Appalachian fiddlers who were active during the first half of the 20th century. Some of them were recorded commercially in the 1920s, such as Gid Tanner, Fiddlin? John Carson, and Charlie Bowman. Some were recorded by folklorists from the Library of Congress, such as William Stepp, Emmett Lundy, and Marion Reece. Others were recorded informally by family members and visitors, such as John Salyer, Emma Lee Dickerson, and Manco Sneed. All of them played throughout most of their lives and influenced the growth and stylistic elements of fiddle music in their regions. Each fiddler has been given a chapter with a biography, several tune transcriptions, and tune histories. To show the richness of the music, the authors make a special effort to show the musical elements in detail, but also acknowledge that nothing can take the place of listening. Many of the classic recordings used in this book can be found on the web, allowing you to hear and read the music together.

In 1989, the demonstration named the Baltic Way also known as the Baltic Chain— was held in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by its citizens in a call for independence from the Soviet Union. On 23rd August 1989, some two million participants formed a human chain, hand-in-hand all the way from the Estonian capital of Tallinn its Latvian counterpart, Riga, through to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius - six hundred kilometres long. It became the longest human chain ever created and turned out to be the final push needed for much sought-after independence. This historic event became the source of inspiration for this composition. The introduction of thefirst movement, ‘Struggle for Independence’, is based on a nocturne for piano by the renowned Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911), thematic material from which has been incorporated throughout the whole composition. The melancholic beginning is followed by a powerful theme which reflects the resolve of the Baltic people. The sudden aggressive, dissonant chords and a dominant and—in rhythmic terms—contrary bass drum announce that the resistance is not going smoothly. Just for a moment, we hear the anthem of the Soviet Union in the lower brass, but this is relentlessly pushed to the background by the rest of the band playing the Lithuanian national anthem, ‘Tautiška giesm ’ (Lithuania, our homeland). The second movement, ‘Decades of Suffering’, echoes life under the Soviet Union's thumb. In the pursuit of independence, a peaceful protest is planned in which a human chain is formed across the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This ‘Chain of Freedom’ is depicted in the final movement of the work. La musique descriptive nous raconte l’histoire d’un chêne antique et séculaire. « Il avait justement atteint trois cent soixante-cinq ans (…). Souvent, par les beaux jours d'été, il discutait avec les éphémères qui venaient s'ébattre et tourbillonner gaiement autour de sa couronne. (…) Le temps approchait où il allait se reposer (…). Le chêne (…) s'endormit pour tout le long hiver ; et il eut bien des rêves, où sa vie passée lui revint en souvenir. (…) Et, tout coup, le chêne éprouva comme si un nouveau et puissant courant de vie partant des extrémités de ses racines le traversait de part en part, montant jusqu' sa cime, jusqu'au bout de ses plus hautes feuilles. (…) Soudainement, ses racines se détachèrent de terre. (…) Ce fut la fin du rêve du vieux chêne. Une tempête terrible soufflait sur mer et sur terre. (…) Il tomba, au moment où il rêvait qu'il s'élançait vers l'immensité des cieux. (…) »Les couleurs et les atmosphères créées par Maxime Aulio laissent l'imagination toute la liberté de ses rêveries.The Last Dream of the Old Oak est une commande de la Communauté de Communes de Vinay en Isère (France) pour l’inauguration de son Musée de la Noix. L’œuvre fut donnée en création sous le titre éphémère du Dernier rêve du noyer, mais l’histoire racontée était bien celle.

Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by “De Arumer Swarte Heap,“ the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!Pierius Magnus is een historisch figuur uit Friesland. Hij was boer én opstandeling tegen de Hollandse onderdrukkers, zo rond het jaar 1500. Was hij een held? Was hij een barbaar? Hoe we hem ook willen zien, Jan de Haan zag in GruttePier ieder geval een spannende bron van inspiratie in voor een compositie. Hij stelt de nationale held direct in het begin aan ons voor met een grillig capricciothema. Daarna volgt: ‘De Arumer Swarte Heap’, zijn bende mannen dieten strijde trok tegen de Hollanders. Een moment van rust valt in. Maar niet voor lang, want de strijd barst in alle hevigheid los! Ob Held oder Barbar lässt sich heute einfach nicht zweifelsfrei belegen, aber der Komponist fand die Geschichte einfach zu spannend, um sie nciht als Inspirationsquelle zu nutzen. In Pierius Magnus wird der Nationalheld gleich zu Beginn des Werkes mit einem kapriziösen Thema vorgestellt, gefolgt von seinem Haufen De Arumer Swarte Heap. Dann- bevor der Kampf beginnt- tritt ein Moment der Ruhe ein, bevor Pier und seine Truppe in den Kampf ziehen. Das Werk endet mit dem Rücken des desillusionierten Pierius.Pier Gerlofs Donia est l’un des personnages les plus célèbres de l’histoire de la Frise au cours des années 1500. L’Histoire ne nous permet pas de discerner les réelles intentions de cet homme surnommé le grand Pier de par son imposante stature. Était-il un combattant de la liberté ou un authentique barbare ? Le compositeur a trouvé toutefois en cette emblématique figure, une source d’inspiration fascinante. Pierius Grelofs Donia è una delle più celebri figure della storia della regione olandese della Frisia nel corso del 1500. La storia non ci permette di discernere le reali intenzioni di quest’uomo soprannominato Grutte Pier (il grande Pier) per la sua statura imponente. Fu un paladino della libert o un semplice barbaro? Il compositore ha trovato in questa emblematica figura un’affascinante fonte d’ispirazione. Le prime misure di Pierius Magnus descrivono l’eroe nazionale attraverso un tema capriccioso. Un secondo tema dipinge la brigata nera di Arum, pronta ad affrontare gli olandesi. Un breve momento di calma fa da preludio al combattimento, prima che Pier Grelofsentri in azione. Disilluso, il grande Pier si ritira; la fine dell’opera sancisce anche la fine del combattimento.

A tour de force string orchestra work by Sean O'Loughlin, Pursuit of Liberty is well worth the effort for your group, delving into the sound of the American frontier; a flowing tapestry of timbres and textures.Pursuit of Liberty is a piece for string orchestra commissioned by the Stringendo Orchestral Ensemble in Paris, France under the direction of Jean Thorel. Mr. Thorel asked me to compose this piece as part of a celebration of the French Revolution. His only request was to use a folk song from that time period as the basis for the piece. “Ah! Ca Ira†by Gervais Couperin from 1790 is the folk song I chose for this setting.The opening music contains fragments of the folk song’s melody. I also utilize this phrase as a transitional element between sections in the piece. It helps to integrate an original melody that I employ as counterpoint to the “Ah! Ca Ira†melody. The folk song melody first appears in its complete form at m. 14. Exposition and development follows until m. 37, which signals a transition to an original melody of mine. The eighth note pulse is punctuated by accents and sixteenth note interjections. Please bring those out of the texture throughout this section. Fragments of the folk song melody begin to appear in each of the sections of the ensemble which functions as an extended build up to a main statement of my original melody at m. 62. The folk song melody rejoins the setting in the upper strings at m. 70. This plays concurrently with the original melody in the lower strings. At m. 80, the melodies are reversed in the ensemble to a dramatic effect. The opening music returns at m. 84 to provide momentum to the rousing chords at m. 93 and subsequent conclusion. Vivre la Liberté!
