The term “labyrinth” refers to an intricate and confusing maze of pathways. In similar fashion, William Himes' somewhat devious, yet delightful musical representation takes the listener (and performer) on a journey of increasing complexity and musical twists and turns before ultimately revealing the familiar path leading to the exit. Composed using a single tempo, Labyrinth offers a unique and effective setting for band. Duration: 3:20.

A cantata for tenor and chamber orchestra, with words from The Well by George Mackay Brown and a German translation by Gunther Bauer Schenk. The centre-piece of a chamber orchestra trilogy (see also Sinfonia Concertante and Sinfonietta Accademica) and is a symphonic song-cycle in five continuous movements. The text ponders the influence of modern times on ancient ways of life. Into The Labyrinth is the second of a set of three works for chamber orchestra written in 1982-3, and is the only one using voice. The first performance took place in June 1993 in St. Magnus' Cathedral, Orkney, as part of the St. Magnus Festival. It was given by Neil Mackie and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Conlon. Score (miniature). Duration c. 31mins.

My work Labyrinth for Ithaca College could have easily been titled as my Third Symphony. The work is larger in scope than every other work of mine for winds, save perhaps my first symphony. The piece is cast in two main parts, each consisting of two movements. As it happened I wrote the movements backwards (fitting for something called Labyrinth). The size of the band is on par with that of Karel Husa’s Music for Prague 1968 with one exception, there is an electric keyboard part which lends certain moments in the piece an other-worldly ambience... sounds that are altogether different from anything possible from acoustic instruments. At the risk of sounding obvious or mundane, I had two words floating around my brain during the composing of this work — HUGE and melodic. My predisposition to create inherently melodic music is inescapable at this point in my composing career. This is the kind of music I have gravitated towards since beginning at the piano so long ago. I don’t write ambient or spectral music, nor do I write music replete with extended techniques. The crafting of melodies with gravitas has always made my process of composing the most satisfying. The very last movement of Labyrinth is a gargantuan crescendo the likes of the last movement of Respighi’s The Pines of Rome or Ravel’s Bolero and should leave the audience and players sonically drenched by the end. I’m so honored to have this opportunity to compose for Ithaca College’s 50th Anniversary of that seminal work of Karel Husa’s. I have known Music for Prague 1968 as long as I’ve known serious music for winds. It is my aim that every moment of Labyrinth offers the players as much to bite their teeth on as it leaves the audience in its throng from start to finish. -CP.

The music for Daedalus' Labyrinth is loosely based on the story first presented by Homer. You'll hear the musical twists, rhythmic turns, and harmonic changes that have made Sean O'Loughlin's music so popular. This is a sophisticated work, but well worth the effort for the advancing band. Conquer the Labryrinth!

This composition evolved from an improvisation played by Petr Eben himself on numerous concert tours across Europe. Now the printed version long awaited by many organists has been published. The fourteen pieces are based on themes taken from the book by the same name by the humanist philosopher, educational theorist and theologist Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670). Eben writes about the piece: 'The pilgrim who wanders through the labyrinth of the world finds nothing here to delight him and turns his heart towards God. What touches me most about Comenius' view is his tireless striving to make the world a better place. The whole atmosphere of the text is not that of an idyllic stroll through the world, but of a satirical, bizarre and sometimes even apocalyptic vision.'.

Francis KleynjansItâs a beautiful journey through the tones that I offer you with these two pieces. The first The Stations of the Cross express the 14 scenes of the Passion of Christ through a simple arpeggio and 14 different tones. The 12 minor keys which begin the work in a perfectly natural way (D, A, E, B, F#, C#, G#, D#, Bb, F, C, G) are followed by two major keys (D and the) who come conclude the work as a triumphant deliverance. The second piece Labyrinthe uses the same principle, but in a different way. With another arpeggio and major and minor tones which follow one another alternating in a natural way through a slight mutation, leading us astray in the meanders of the tones, to finally find ourselves in the original tone, we thus delivering from this great labyrinth (do, lam, re, sim, mi, do#m, fa#, re#m, ab, fam and do).I hope that the discoverers of these pieces will have the same pleasure that I had in composing them for them.Francis Kleynjans.

Daedalus Remembers is the third part in a trilogy called 3 for Icarus. Daedalus was Icarus' father and a famous craftsman. He once forged a magic sword for Peleus which had a property of making its owner victorious in battle, and he also created the labyrinth of King Minos of Crete in which the Minotaur (half bull, half man) was imprisoned. The second part of the trilogy is entitled Minotaur Games after Troy games, a kind of labyrinthine dance involving cords (Ariadne's thread?). At one point in the myth Daedalus and Icarus are also imprisoned in the labyrinth. They escape by means of wings which Daedalus has made from feathers and wax. Sadly, despite his father's warnings, Icarus flies too close to the sun in a fit of hubris, and the wings melt, causing him to plunge to his death. Daedalus alights safely on a beach in Sardinia, and after he has collected his thoughts remembers his son's fall and scenes from his own past life. Have the gods paid him back for the death of his nephew Talos, whom Daedalus killed in a fit of jealousy by pushing him off the top of a temple in the Acropolis? Daedalus rants and sorrows - dark memories nag persistently. Daedalus Remembers is scored for solo cello with flugelhorn, two horns, percussion, cimbalom, harp, three violas, four cellos and two double-basses.
