When he subsequently heard that the Rundfunk Blasorchester from the German town of Leipzig -a place not far from Colditz - was to dedicate a CDto his work, Rob Goorhuis got the idea to process some of the themes from his Requiem for Man into an instrumental composition about the famous Colditz castle. a place still bearing the scars of war.
From 1933 to 1934, the castle was aSchutzhaftlager. During the Second World War, it was used as a prison for senior officers. From this prison, many escapes were undertaken, which even resulted in the castle being nicknamed The Escape School. In the seventies, a television-seriesabout this period made the castle very well-known with the public at large.
The despondent tone of the opening theme underscores the sadness caused by wars and violence. Nevertheless the works ending is hopeful and triumphant. Peace iscelebrated, but with the hope for a lasting peace sadly remaining a topical issue to the present moment.

Mechthild of Magdeburg, born around 1207, died around 1282 in the monastery of Helfta near Eisleben, lived and worked as a Beguine in Magdeburg for about 40 years. Born in a castle in the vicinity of the city, she joined the poverty movement when she was about 20 years old and chose the descent from the castle to the city. She is known to this day for her book The Flowing Light of the Godhead, which she wrote in Low German, the language of the people and the poor. Here, the bridal mysticism of the Old Testament Song of Songs combines with the poetry of courtly minnesong to create a new poetic creation that gives her immediate experience of God an outwardly tangible form. Mechthild's book is considered the most important example of German-language mysticism before Meister Eckhart.Weakened by hostility and illness, she retired to Helfta Monastery around 1270. There are two known manuscript sources for the present edition of this sinfonia avanti l'opera. In the Dean and Chapter Library of Durham Cathedral it appears as the twelfth, and last, piece in a collection of late seventeenth-century Italian instrumental music. No composer is given and identification was only possible following the discovery, in 1993, of a concordant source in the Biblioteca Estense, Modena, where the work appears as the sinfonia to Perti's opera L'Inganno scoperto per Vendetta, first performed in Venice as part of the 1690/1 season.It is sometimes hard to ascertain the original functional purpose behind many of the trumpet works written by composers of the Bolognese school as it would appear that some were used as sonate da chiesa, to celebrate mass in the basilica of San Petronio, Bologna, whilst also serving as operatic sinfonie. To confuse the issue further, there are several instances of composers 'borrowing' each other's works: for example, it has recently been discovered that the Torelli trumpet sinfonia a 4 catalogued as G4 in Giegling was used as the overture to Perti's opera Nerone fatto Cesare (1693). So far as the present edition is concerned, however, stylistic considerations would appear to confirm that the work is indeed by Perti and that it was originally conceived as the overture to L'Inganno scoperto per Vendetta. A couple of clues hint at a secular raison d'etre: the Durham source is marked Serenatto (presumably a corruption of serenata, a term often used in lieu of sinfonia) and the last movement of the Modena source is marked Menuet, a term more often associated with sonate da camera than with works of ecclesiastical provenance.Both the Modena and Durham sources for the present edition are virtually note-perfect and occasional inaccuracies were easily corrected by comparing the sources with each other and with the part-books in Durham. Whilst the Modena source lacks the second violin part in the outer movements it contains fuller dynamic markings and tempi indications than the Durham source and these have been followed in the present edition with no editorial additions. Notation has been modernised and, in the piano reduction edition, right-hand arpeggio-figurations rendered more pianistic. Parts are provided for trumpet in D and B flat. In 1845 Franz Liszt embarked on a project to compose an Italian opera based on Lord Byron’s tragedy, Sardanapalus (1821). It was central to his ambition to attain status as a major European composer, with premieres variously planned for Milan, Vienna, Paris and London. But he abandoned it half way through, and the music he completed has lain silently for 170 years. Liszt’s difficulty in obtaining a libretto meant that composition only began in April 1850. He completed virtually all the music for Act 1 in an annotated piano-vocal score of 111 pages, contained within his N4 music ‘sketch book’. The unnamed librettist was an Italian poet and political prisoner, seemingly living under house arrest, and a close acquaintance of Cristina Belgiojoso. His libretto survives as underlay in the N4 sketchbook and has been critically reconstructed and translated. Sardanapalo is Liszt’s only mature opera. While he consistently referred to it in French, as Sardanapale, the published title of the Italian opera would almost certainly have used the Italian name, hence this forms the title of the first edition. There are three solo roles and a chorus of concubines. The manuscript was previously thought to be fragmentary and partially illegible, but it was finally deciphered to international acclaim in March 2017. Liszt’s score offers a richly melodic style, with elements from Bellini and Verdi alongside glimmers of Wagner and the symphonic poems ahead: a unique mixture of Italianate pastiche and mid-century harmonic innovation. It remains quintessentially Lisztian. The opera sets Byron’s tragedy about war and peace in ancient Assyria: the last King, effeminate in his tastes, is drawn to wine, concubines and feasts more than politics and war: his subjects find him dishonourable (a ‘man queen’) and military rebels seek to overthrow him, but are pardoned, for the King rejects the ‘deceit of glory’ built on others’ suffering: this leads only to a larger uprising, the Euphrates floods its banks, destroying the castle’s main defensive wall, and defeat is inevitable: the King sends his family away and orders that he be burned alive with his lover, amid scents and spices in a grand inferno.
