Tchaikovsky had the printing of his epoch-making violin concerto supervised with great care, and he even examined the proofs himself for the publication of the version for violin and piano in 1878, which was followed by the orchestral parts the following year and the score in 1888. After many editions and respective arrangements by Leopold Auer in 1899, Fritz Kreisler in 1939 and, most recently, by Konstantin G. Mostras and David Oistrakh, based on Auer comes an Urtext edition that takes into account all surviving sources and critically evaluates them, a matter of great importance for both scholars and performing artists.

The triumphal concert hall success of Tchaikovsky's most popular and musically most valuable concert pieces for solo instrument and orchestra was preceded by severe teething troubles. His Piano Concerto No. 1 Op. 23 of 1874/75 was slated by Tchaikovsky's mentor and potential performer at the premiere, the pianist, conductor and director of the Moscow Conservatory, Nikolai Rubinstein. So Hans von Bulow premiered it gratefully and enthusiastically (in Boston, USA, on 25 October 1875). Leopold Auer, violin virtuoso and professor at the Petersburg Conservatory, to whom Tchaikovsky wanted to dedicate his Violin Concerto Op. 35 of 1878, refused to premiere it - he regarded the solo part as unrewarding and unplayable. On 4 December 1881, Adolf Brodsky premiered the Violin Concerto in Vienna, with Hans Richter conducting, but Eduard Hanslick wrote a crushing and unpleasant review. The Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra Op. 33 were finally published by their dedicatee, the German cellist and professor at the Moscow Conservatory, Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, after he had almost completely rewritten and then premiered it on 18 December 1877 in Moscow, while Tchaikovsky, who had asked him to publish the work, was abroad. The original version, which can be found in this edition, was not published until the 1950s.

A Tchaikovsky Urtext is no longer a rarity in Breitkopfs orchestral catalogue. Polina Vajdman has edited a very popular repertoire work that the composer personally did not think very highly of. He even confessed to having written the work without the warmth of love. Nevertheless, the piece is a masterful example of program music that seemingly casually interweaves two Russian folk songs, a liturgical melody of the Russian Orthodox Church and two national anthems, the Marseillaise and the Czars Hymn. The work was written for the consecration of the Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow, which was erected in memory of the victory over Napoleon in 1812. The first edition of the score, which was carefully corrected three times by Tchaikovsky, is the principal source for this Urtext edition. The wording of the title The Year 1812 corresponds to the composers words, but was oddly never included in the first edition.

SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers._______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. Urtext of Revolutionary Overture
ISBN 9790004341407. 10 x 12.5 inches.
The Overture to Hermann and Dorothea is the only compositional result that Schumann reaped from Goethes epic poem. He had originally planned an entire opera, then a Singspiel, and finally an oratorio. In the end (1851), he quickly produced an orchestral score that remained unprinted during his lifetime. The striking thematic use of the Marseillaise is multiply motivated: Goethes poem unfolds in 1796, when the two eponymous lovers are fleeing from the French revolutionary troops; Schumann had directly experienced the revolutionary uprisings of 1848 in Dresden; finally, Louis Napoleons coup detat of 2 December 1851 must also have made an impact on the composer. The primary source of the Urtext edition of Schumanns Revolutionary Overture is the carefully written autograph.Urtext of the Revolutionary.

'Romance for violin and piano is a short, reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist, Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing, numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece, the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.' - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981, Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. Wilson has been praised by 21st Century Music as a “splendidly talented and highly accomplished composer whose music rewards seeking out†and by the New York Sun as “possessed of a hard-won idiom that has grown and developed over the years into a probing blend of wit, classic form, modern harmony, and impressionistic color.†Writing in the New Yorker, Andrew Porter called his String Quartet No. 3 a “richly wrought and unusual composition,†while the New York Times called it “a work of substance and expressivity ... [that] merits a place in the active repertory.â€.
