Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed. This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happenagain. A moving and contemplative new work for concert band.

For those who trust in God, in the pain of sorrow there is consolation, in the face of despair there is hope, in the midst of death there is life. —Order of Christian Funerals Those who struggle with the inability to conceive, those who know the pain of losing a child before birth, and those who have faced their infant's death at the time of birth know that this season of mourning is often held inside, hidden and unseen. But God does not abandon us. Somehow, on the other side of loss an incredible story of resilience emerges. Bodies, though they are never the same again, heal. Couples try again, adopt, or reimagine. Those who mourn in isolation find not one, not two, but a community of others with whom they can identify. God's silence is not absence, it is the patient listening of a God who knows our grief first-hand, who weeps with us, who holds us as a mother holds her child. Death is never the whole story. The hope of new life surprises, confounds, persists. Of Womb and Tomb: Prayer in Time of Infertility, Miscarriage, and Stillbirth is a resource for individuals, couples, and parish communities who wish to accompany those on their grief journey. Filled with stories, prayers, Scripture, poems, and rituals this book may serve as a guide in creating prayer opportunities in a variety of settings. Together, let us bear witness to the Christian mystery—that new life is born of the womb and of the tomb. This is the printed music collection, which corresponds to the selections found on the recording (CD-1061), offers some ideas for congregational use, but certainly does not exhaust the musical possibilities. This bundle contains one copy of the book (G-9816), music collection (G-9817), and CD (CD-1061).

Six Bagatelles is a set of whimsical character pieces which, in my own composer’s perception, provided balance to some of the heavier works I had written over the previous several years. The first movement, Humming, not only hums along like a well-tuned engine, but it also evokes a melody that someone might actually hum. Let Evening Come is an arrangement of a song, for baritone or mezzo-soprano, flute, and piano, on Jane Kenyon’s poem of the same name—part of a cycle from 1994 called Night Will Blossom. The title Melancholy speaks for itself, as does that of the fifth movement, Solace. Skirmish started out as a march, but when changes of meter emerged in the composing of the piece, I realized it was no longer marchable, though still martial in character. The final movement is a Mosaic in two senses: the accompaniment in the strings in the outer sections of the piece is made up of small bits of material, combining to create an overall texture; and its middle section is made up of fragments of material heard in earlier movements. —Mark Carlson Flute & String Quartet Composed: 1995 Published by: Pacific Serenades.

Contrasting colors and varied orchestration techniques make this majestic setting of OH LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM come alive for Christmas. Of the three different tunes that are commonly associated with the original carol text, this arrangement uses the melody that’s best known in England. ENGLISH CAROL FANTASY remains entirely accessible to bands at this level and plenty of cueing makes sure it’s useful for ensembles of all shapes and sizes. Feature your deserving young trumpet section leader on the easy solo, or let the entire first trumpet section play it soli. The low woodwinds and brass also get some “well doubled†exposure, so playing this one will be fun for all.Try it!
