Listening Excerpts to Develop Band Musicianship is a resource that can sit near your workstation for ease and speed. I feel listening has been a great benefit to my students. I have spent a lot of time attempting to be more efficient, and I want to share the fruits of my labor with others. Incorporate listening excerpts into your teaching, and you and your students will benefit greatly. —Jim Childers Providing great listening models for band students can be an incredibly efficient and effective way to convey musical concepts—provided directors have a library of well-organized recordings that catalog everything from expressive styles (“Heroicâ€) to technical issues (“Double-Tonguingâ€). With this essential book, Jim Childers does the hard work of classifying the top wind band recordings to provide efficient excerpts for just the right concept. Imagine teaching students to do a lifting release. If they heard members of “The President’s Own†in one of their amazing recordings, students can be enlightened and inspired. With added coaching from the director, students will have a shortened trip to improved performance. In this resource, Childers collects hundreds of quality listening excerpts into tables and categorizes them both by instrumentation and by characteristics such as expressive elements, articulations, tempo, and more. This book helps directors be efficient in using small, but effective, listening to develop students’ musicianship—and is particularly helpful in a distance learning environment. When considering how much time directors spend in rehearsals trying to describe and redefine the musical effects they desire, words and their connotative meanings often fall short and fail to produce what a director hopes to hear. But providing students the opportunity to listen to great bands playing those desired elements from within great pieces of music can, and will, improve musicianship and inspire students! Jim Childers is Director of Bands at Marion (IL) Jr. High School, where he directs all band activities in grades six through eight. He has directed bands since 1991, at Marion Jr. High School since 2002 as well as Highland High School and Mt. Vernon Township High School. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education at Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, studying trombone with Dr. Robert Weiss. He has guest conducted many camps, including ISYM at the University of Illinois, and has been invited to present at several conferences, including The Midwest Clinic.

How choir members listen directly impacts the quality of their music making. Listening Awareness is a practical book that guides choral singers—and members of any music ensemble—to become more aware of their own sound as well as the sound of their ensemble. The goal is to help musicians take ownership of the sound they create so singers and musicians learn to provide effective feedback to improve the sound of the entire ensemble. Author Anthony Bernarducci’s approach is simple: Students need to be taught to accurately hear musical concepts before they can apply them in their own music making. He provides a practical and pedagogical approach to concepts such as tone, balance, form, and texture. He also includes exercises that apply aural concepts to style and nuance of historical and contemporary literature—always recommending suggested repertoire, composers, and recordings for each style period. Other topics in Listening Awareness include the different levels of listening, the impact of seating position on sound, strategies for starting a new work, and the characteristics of harmony and melody. Finally, Listening Awareness includes reproducible worksheets to assist with many of the exercises. States Bernarducci, “Our ability to listen, evaluate, and transform will need to be constantly sharpened throughout our careers, our students’ abilities are no exception to this need.†Anthony Bernarducci is Assistant Professor of Music at Clemson University, where he conducts the Men’s Choir and mixed chamber choir Cantorei. He also teaches courses in music theory and composition.

In this sixth book of the series, the authors builld upon the lower junior stage, and use a similar modular format. Designed to extend skill acquisition in performance, improvising and composing, listening and appraising, and notating music, pupils are challenged by incresingly demanding musical materials. At the same time there is an emphasis on pupils acquiring knowledge and expertise of the deep structures of a range of music, and a greater acknowledgement of musical purpose and context. Attuned to the National Curriculum experiences, particular features of this book are: a consolidation and deepening of vocal and instrumental techniques and performance * an integrated approach to improvising and composing, combing skills in listening and appraising, knowledge and understanding * a module focusing on aural observation, representation, recording and notation of sound * an active, analytical and frequently physical approach to listening and appraising * a focus on music in its social and historical context in relation to dance.

“The Listening,” written by Grammy-nominated composer Cheryl B. Engelhardt in December 2017 for VOICES 21C under the artistic direction of André de Quadros, draws its inspiration from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impactful 1967 speech, “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence.” This dynamic, emotion-filled piece expresses King's call to end societal silence. The rhythmic elements in the piece are derived from the poetic nature of King's speech. The inclusion of a children's choir, inspired by the Parkland school shooting and subsequent protests, symbolizes the disruption of childhood peace by violence. Notably, the virtual collaboration, featuring Donzaleigh Abernathy, Dr. King's goddaughter, emphasizes the song's contemporary relevance in addressing social issues, and was featured in PEOPLE. Premiered live at the Massachusetts Music Educators Conference in 2018 by VOICES 21C, and digitally released during Black History month in 2021, “The Listening” stands as a profound anthem for breaking silence and to foster positive change.

Take a rollicking ride to Snowflake County-a place where Christmas celebrations have become so extravagant they threaten to over shadow the simplicity of Christmas'true meaning. It seems the only one who understands the secret of Jesus' simple birth is little Suzy Hallmark-but no one is listening. It will take a series of crazy mishaps during the community's annual seasonal program before the noise stops and everyone realizes that Christmas isn't about how brightly lights and decorations shine-it's about Jesus, the light of the world. Christy Semsen has once again combined her tuneful songs and clever dialogue with a strong spiritual theme in this delightful musical that is as contemporary as today's headlines. Daniel Semsen's sparkling accompaniment tracks feature musical styles that range from pop to rock to rap and polka. (There are even country line dancing angels and tap dancing wise men!) A full-color Teacher's Resource Kit and a performance IVD are available, providing all the production help you'll need. In addition to long-sleeve and short-sleeve T-shirts, you can also purchase Fun Paks for your choir to use in performance and keep as a souvenir. Your children and congregation are going to love their visit to Snowflake County, where the secret is out: Christ is the center of Christmas!
