Written in honor of the Béla Bartók centennial, MUSIQUE NOCTURNES is inspired by one of his most characteristic and original works, the fourth piece (by the same title), from the suite Out of Doors. Both pieces feature overlapping “night musics†– atmospheric cluster figures, sharply contrasting motifs suggesting nocturnal bird, frog, or insect sounds, and an element of human, folksong-like melody as Levinson alludes to the authentic Hungarian folksong, “Tiszán innen, Dunán túl.â€.This simple piece was written in 2015 as a birthday present for the composer’s wife, poet and fellow bird lover Nanine Valen, and is a distant sequel to Canons and Chorale, which he wrote for her in 1969. The ornithological character is an affectionate tribute as well to his teacher Olivier Messiaen. The titular birds are a highly stylized chickadee and two song sparrows.First public performance: Swarthmore College, November 13, 2016, by Marcantonio Barone, whose editorial assistance in the preparation of this edition is gratefully acknowledged. Recorded by Marcantonio Barone on Innova 948.

While Gibson produced literally thousands of banjos prior to WWII, only a handful were made in the now most desirable configuration: the Original Flathead Five-String Mastertone. Since Earl Scruggs helped to make them the most sought-after banjos in the world over 60 years ago, these instruments have amassed a cult-like following. These particular banjos featured a completely innovative design when the Gibson Company introduced them around 1930. They have since become the benchmark in design, sound quality, and just sheer power among banjo players. They have therefore also become the inspiration for nearly every successful 5-string banjo that has been manufactured for the past five decades. Like Martin Dreadnaught and Fender Stratocaster guitars, the Gibson Mastertone Banjo has achieved an exalted status: It is appreciated far beyond its utilitarian purpose as a musical instrument, and considered a truly original American art form. The Mastertone design and style are instantly recognizable by musicians and music lovers around the world, even if imitated by other manufacturers. Of the 130 or so Original Flathead Five-String Mastertones known to exist, 19 of the absolute best are featured here. The Scruggs, Reno, Jenkins, Crowe, Osborne, Huber and Mills banjos are shown in all of their glory, with details of their known histories and provenances, as well as never-before-seen photos, bills of sale, factory shipping ledgers, and other ephemera relating to these rare and highly desirable instruments.

La Libertà is the most original, and among the most attractive, of Maurice Greene’s secular vocal compositions on Italian texts. Strong circumstantial evidence indicates that he wrote it as a composition for the celebrated operatic singer Faustina Bordoni to sing as a grateful farewell to her English patrons and admirers just before her final departure from London in the summer of 1728. The song commemorates not only Faustina but also her constant companion and reputed lover, the violinist Mauro d’Alay, who is likely to have been the original player of the obbligato violin part with which the vocal part interweaves. Greene took the text from an Italian translation of A Letter from Italy, a famous poem by Joseph Addison extolling liberty, which was at the time seen as a distinguishing characteristic of England.

The Gesang der Weiden (Song of the Willows) is a slightly revised and reworked excerpt from the 6th scene of the opera Die Weiden. The work is for chorus a cappella (minimum 16 voices). The opera Die Weiden is a journey 'into the heart of darkness' along a great river in Central Europe today, which, if you will, can undoubtedly be identified as the Danube. The story oscillates between a travel journey of two lovers who fall in and out of love and, a surreal distorted observation of today's current threatening developments. Keywords: the Angry Citizen, the Vigilante, the increasing isolation from the outside and the brutalization of the social center - all this despite our heavily burdened history. This is achieved through pandemonium-like hallucinations of one of the protagonists as well as through the transformation motif man-to-fish.(Johannes Maria Staud)Slightly revised excerpt from the sixth picture.
