This setting of the march from Grieg's Lyric Suite is a charming and colorful work in ABA form. Delicate at the beginning, it develops the lyric melody, then the march builds with intensity to a dramatic conclusion. Rewarding and musical! (3:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875, music from Peer Gynt was originally incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's five-act play. The beautiful Solveig's Song is from the second orchestral suite later extracted by Grieg. Johnnie's tender setting opens with a lyric theme scored for the trumpet section. A brief andante section features the woodwinds before returning to the opening melody this time richly scored for full band. A beautiful work for teaching lyric style playing.

This three-movement arrangement is an excellent introduction to the masterful writing of Edvard Grieg. Selected from several earlier collections, these delightful pieces are not all formally lyrical - rather, they all feature the great melodic writing of a master composer in a short suite that is the perfect fit for the classical portion of your program.

The Brook Green Suite was written in 1933 during Holst's stay in the hospital (where he was to die in May 1934). It was written for his pupils, the junior orchestra at St Paul's Girls School; He wanted to write a piece in a contemporary, mature style that was easy enough for his pupils to perform; he felt they deserved better than simple orchestrations from keyboard originals or 'watered down' pieces. It was probably named after Brook Green because that was the location of his wedding to his wife, Isobel, in 1901. it could have also been named after the Brook because of it's proximity to the school. The Prelude is based on the descending C major scale; while the Air sounds as if it was based on English folk song, but most likely it was not. Holst had become so acquainted with folk song during his life that a lot of his melodies were very similar to them. The structure of the Air is reminiscent of the counterpoint of The Lyric Movement, full of enharmonic relations and somewhat austere. This is a trait of most of his later works. The Dance is based on a melody heard in a puppet show while he was on holiday in Sicily. This arrangement has been crafted so that flute 1 has the hardest part and flute 4 the easiest. All parts contribute to the piece, with solos for everyone.

Written to be included as the 4th movement to the multi-composer suite honoring the retirement of composer Jack Stamp. The folk song O Waly Waly is better known by its contemporary lyric The Water Is Wide, and happens to be one of Jack Stamp's favorite songs. Composer Timothy Broege puts his own imprint on the compositional style of the dedicatee, Jack Stamp.

Suite No. 1 is a hymn to the divinity of the dance. The piece explores all possibilities of extreme rhythm, harmony and orchestration in order to place special emphasis on the piano as a solo instrument with all its possibilities: from percussion instrument to lyric simplicity. At the end, the composer quotes the style of his scores together with the ancient tragedies in an epilogue with prominent signals from the wind section.

Suite in Three Movements (2021) for harpsichord was commissioned by Scott Hyslop. The three movements take their inspiration and forms from early models. They combine allusions to common practice harmony with later harmonic and rhythmic elements. The first movement, Concerto, is in a bright, Italianate manner (not without a bit of humor). The animating contrast is between ripieno (ritornello) sections and filigree-driven solo episodes. The second movement, Arioso, is a lyric aria in which the baroque-like principal material is integrated with more varied harmonic excursions. The third movement, Sonata, is a vibrant binary movement in the manner of Domenico Scarlatti.Harpsichord Duration: 13’ Composed: 2021 Published by: Zimbel Press.
