Along with the movement In the Kingâ??s Hall, The Homage March from Act III of Sigurd Jorsalfar remains one of the most popular Scandinavian pieces of classical music. This arrangement has, once again, has been skilfully crafted by Wil van der Beek for a younger Concert Band and will be a popular addition to any concert.

Grieg schreef Homage March voor het toneelstuk Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd de kruisvader) van Bjørnsterne Bjørnsons. Dit voorstreffelijke en feestelijke werk inspireerde Wil van der Beek tot het schrijven van een schitterendebewerking voor harmonieorkest. Een uitstekende keuze!

Sigurd Jorsalfar ist die Bühnenmusik zum gleichnamigen Drama des berühmten norwegischen Dichters Bjørnsterne Bjørnson. Das Werk basiert auf einer altnordischen Sage von zwei Brüdern, die beide um den Königsthron kämpfen und einer Frau, die den Streit schlichten soll. Wil van der Beek bearbeitete den feierlichen Huldigungsmarsch aus diesem Werk für Blasorchester.

La Marche dâ??Hommage de lâ??acte III de la suite orchestrale Sigurd Jorsalfar dâ??Edvard Grieg, se trouve lâ??opposé des marches au caractère sombre ou martial. Lâ??introduction en forme de fanfare est superbement lyrique. Puis vient lâ??exposition dâ??un thème joué cantabile. Lâ??instrumentation développe quelque peu le thème initial avec des accents rythmiques la basse. Le thème de la marche est ainsi amorcé. Un trio central, lumineux et serein, précède le retour du thème de marche au tutti.

In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan’s twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, “Soli Deo Gloria” (Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian comopser Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Saëns organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond.Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from ‘Jan de Haan’ and ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, resulting in the tonerow: DEGAH. Both elements are combined together and form a grand climax towards the end of the piece when the whole band unites in the Saint Saëns’ theme.

Homage wurde von Jan Van der Roost im Auftrage der Brass Band Soli Deo Gloria aus Leeuwarden geschrieben. Direkter Anlass dazu war das 20-jährige Jubiläum von Jan de Haan als Dirigent dieses Ensembles. Als Inspiration diente dem Komponistendas Choralthema der Orgelsymphonie von Camille Saint-Saëns, ein von Jan de Haan geschätztes Werk. Nebst diesem Choral basiert Homage ebenfalls auf den Notenbezeichnungen aus ‘Jan de Haan’ und ‘Soli Deo Gloria’, was die Notenreihe DEGAH ergab.Beide Elemente werden durcheinander verwendet, bis sich schließlich die ganze Band im Finale mit dem Saint-Saëns-Thema wieder zusammenfindet.

Here's a march that is so much more than a march! This celebratory concert piece contains enthusiastic fanfare, stately march, lyric melodies, rich harmonies, prominent rhythms and gentle pastoral moments. Shifting is required for violin 1, cello and bass, and optional shifting for viola. Students in all sections will experience the full spectrum of expressiveness in dynamics and bowings and will be challenged with intonation and rhythmic clarity. This might be the time to give your traditional graduation march a break! (6:00).

This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin, a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin, who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement, the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement, Allegro Molto Vivace’, could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis, the crown on the pastoral work of Martin, Bishop of Tours, Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.

Jan Van der Roost komponierte diese Suite anlässlich des 110. Geburtstages der Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare aus Halle (Brabant).
Auftrag des Komponisten was es, ein dreisätziges Werk zu schreiben, dessen einzelne bildhafte Teile einen Bezug zur Sint Martinusfanfare herstellen sollten. Der erste Satz, ein Andante Pomposo, beschreibt Martin, Soldat im römischen Heer. Das darauffolgende Andante Moderato zeichnet ein Bild von Martin, der sich zum Christentum bekehrt und sein Leben Gott widmen möchte. In diesem Satz ließ sich derKomponist von der brabantischen Gotik der Sint Martinus Basiliek in Halle inspirieren. Der Kontrast zwischen der dunklen Basilika und der von hoch emporstrebenden Pfeilern umgebenen, strahlenden Statue der Mutter Gottes wird für den Zuhörer in diesemausdrucksvollen Bild leicht nachvollziehbar.
Der Schlusssatz, ein Allegro Molto Vivace, hätte die musikalische Beschreibung eines ausgelassenen Bauerntanzes während des Karnevalsumzugs in Halle sein können. In einem dem Heiligen Martin gewidmeten Triptychon ist es jedoch angemessener, in einerApotheose darauf zu verweisen, als Krönung des pastoralen Wirkens des Heiligen Martin, Bischof von Tours, Schutzheiliger des Auftraggebers und Stifter der Basilika in Halle.
