This selection is intended to reveal a less-known aspect of the genius of Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century: as a master of piano miniatures. While his large-scale works written over many years show Liszt as a striving composer for whom the creative process was difficult, at the same time, hidden in the shadow of the monumental peaks, the 'moments musicaux' tend to capture him in the process of improvisation, at the moment when a compositional idea flashed into his mind and was first noted down. The miniatures that feature in our selection trace his creative path through six decades (1827-1885), from his youthful testing of his wings right up to his finalfarewell. The manuscript of any piece that did not later become part of a cycle or the starting-point for a larger-scale composition generally remained in the mists of obscurity as a treasured memento preserved by one of his pupils or admirers.

Issu d'un ensemble de six menuets pour orchestre écrit dans les années 1795 par le compositeur, Menuet en sol majeur n°2 WoO 10 se compose, tout comme les cinq autres menuets, de 32 mesures ayant chacun une battue à trois temps.
Le manuscrit original des six menuets est perdu et il n'existe actuellement que des esquisses de la version pour orchestre. La transcription pour piano des menuets a sans doute été faite par Beethoven lui-même et cette version pour piano à deux mains est publiée à Vienne en mars 1796 par Arteria. Elle portait comme titre : «  VI Menuetten / Für das clavier / von Herrn / Ludwig van Beethoven / 2ten Theil ».
Dans ce menuet, Beethoven adopte une forme classique en trois parties, celle du « menuet avec trio ». Le rythme pointé utilisé dans ce menuet est une figure temporelle de prédilection du compositeur. Il représente le rythme caractéristique de cette danse : à l'origine, le menuet est une danse française campagnarde qui a été par la suite adopté à la cour du roi Louis IV. Réjouissance et allégresse résonnent dans le sautillement de cette pièce miniature. Sur un ton par moments énergiques par d’autres langoureux, son balancement évoque à demi mot la personnalité stylistique du personnage et permet au pianiste de se divertir sur un morceau de Beethoven qui se destine à l'expression corporelle.

England enjoys a rich folk song tradition. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the _x001F_first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures: the _x001F_shermanâ??s song Dance to Your Daddy, the love song O Waly, Waly and Bobby Shafto, a song from the northwest of England.

This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to celebrate its 40th birthday. The first performance took place in June 1986 at St. Magnus' Cathedral, Kirkwall, as part of the tenth St. Magnus Festival. Written for and first performed by Isaac Stern, Davies's Violin Concerto brings together two streams in his music: symphonism and folk-fiddling. In its strongly developed substance, it asks to be measured in the company of Beethoven, Brahms and Sibelius, while there is also, particularly in the middle movement, a strong element of the Scots lament. The orchestra is generally muted in colour, though there is a dramatic role for the timpanist. There are three movements, played without a break - this is only one of many connections with the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Duration c. 30mins.

On January 1st, 2016, Stephane Vande Ginste had an extraordinary intention: he planned to compose a 1-minute piece for piano every single day for the whole year. The result is an impressive collection of piano miniatures which - although contemporary - result in a variety of musical styles: apart from some experimental pieces, there are jazzy- and poppy pieces, more traditional etudes, polyphonic compositions and so on... The 366 pieces also tell various stories: from very emotional events like the terrorist attacks in Brussels over homages in honor of deceased artists (David Bowie,...) to birthdays and festive occasions,... . More than once, even poetry (Heinrich Heine, Anna Enquist, ..) or other pieces of art inspired Stephane to compose his daily one-minute piece. Every single composition originated from the here and now, and therefore capture the unfiltered feelings and emotions of that very unique moment in time: joy, enthusiasm, but also melancholy and sadness.
