Born in 1963, Hannu Pohjannoro is widely acclaimed as a composer of quiet, restrained music. It has been said of his music that it seems to have been 'sketched with a sounding quill': Pohjannoro is a composer for whom the magic of different pianissimo shades is of the utmost importance. Though Pohjannoro's aesthetic is distinctly modernist, he nonetheless acknowledges the importance for the compositional process of knowing and understanding musicaltradition. A portrait of Beethoven hangs in his study to remind him that the combination of visceral musical expression and structural strength and clarity is still an ideal to which every composer should strive. Of this work, the composer says: images, hommages is a series of miniature tributes to a number of artists whose works have had a profound effect on me - though, naturally, many other artists could have been included too. I wanted to avoid any form of musical quotation, so from the outset I decided to exclude other composers from the list altogether. As the focus of these miniatures, I therefore selected exponents of abstract art and some of the greatest storytellers of the twentieth century - or, rather, examples of their works. images, hommages presents musical tributes to artists including Albers, Mondrian, Malevich, Kandinsky, Pollock, Kafka, Harms, Calvino and Borges. images, hommages was awareded with the second prize at the VIII International Henri Dutilleux Composition Contest in 2017. Each musician will need their own copy of the performances score.

The River Alladale provides the inspiration for this lyrical piece which has a lilting melody with an unmistakeable Scottish feel. The trio of Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn and Baritone provide a wonderful sense of flowing with the river which, as the piece progresses, broadens and grows stronger as it nears the outlet to the sea by the Summer Isles. Bring a touch of Scots magic to your concert with this delightful piece.

Béla Bartók's (1881-1945) Four Orchestra Pieces, Op. 12 premiered in January 1922 in Budapest, but did not become one of Bartók's best-known works until its popularity was revived by Pierre Boulez in the 1970s. Bartók's influences are on display in these pieces, including that of Debussy in the first movement Preludio, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in the Scherzo. Four Orchestra Pieces is considered a bridge stylistically between Bartók's early works like Duke Bluebeard's Castle and his mature works like The Miraculous Mandarin. Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Lin gave the premiere of Pulcinella in both its concert band and brass band versions in January 2021. Pulcinella continues Sparke’s series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dell’arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the full band and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The band then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The band then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close.

Llio was composed during Berlioz's stay in Italy in 1831. In April of that year he set out from Rome, where he held a scholarship as winner of the Prix de Rome, and travelled as far as Nice on hearing that his fiancee Camille Moke had rejected him in favour of another suitor. He had intended to return to Paris to exact revenge, but then he abandoned his plan and instead spent three weeks in Nice, returning in stages to Rome. On this return journey he conceived the idea of a semi-theatrical work that combined music and monologues to express the idea of returning to life after a profound traumatic experience. The composition was finished in Rome in Iune 1831. In the spring of 1832, while staying with his parents in Dauphin, Berlioz copied the orchestral and vocal parts, and the work was first performed in conjunction with the Symphonie fantastique at the Paris Conservatoire on 9 December 1832. It was heard again three weeks later and again on 3 May 1835. While designated as the second part of the Episode in the Life of an Artist, Lelio can never- theless be performed on its own, without the Symphonie fantastique to precede it.
