Nimrod, the ninth variation from Elgar's masterpiece Op. 36, Enigma Variations (1898-99) is one of the most recognized works in the classical repertoire. There are so many adjectives to describe this piece of genius: stately, majestic, serious, solemn, moving, noble, languid, stoic, enduring and sublime. There are few works in the repertoire that bring forth such strong emotions as this work, which is often performed for funerals and for Memorial Day / Remembrance Day services. Mr. Malmstrom's beautifully lush arrangement is scored for 2 alto trombones (optional), 3 tenor trombones, 2 bass trombones and 1 contrabass trombone (optional). This arrangement of 3-4 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

THE BONES OF MR. FORTUNE (FREE AT LAST!) is an 11-minute concerto-like work for solo flute accompanied by symphonic winds and percussion – perfect to play with band or with orchestra, as well as with the composer’s own piano reduction. The work features lengthy cadenzas, and exhilarating dance-like sections with the ensemble. Hailstork describes the historical inspiration: Abused in life and death, an enslaved man (Mr. Fortune) was owned by a surgeon who preserved his skeleton to study anatomy. The bones remained with the doctor’s family for generations, and were given a proper burial making national news in 2013, 215 years after Mr. Fortune’s death.Abused in life and death, an enslaved man known as Mr. Fortune was honored with an elaborate funeral more than 200 years after he died in Connecticut.Mr. Fortune was owned by Dr. Preserved Porter on a farm in Waterbury, Connecticut. When Fortune died in 1798, Porter, a bone surgeon, preserved his skeleton by having the bones boiled to study anatomy at a time when cadavers for medical study were disproportionately taken from slaves, servants and prisoners. One of Porter’s descendants gave the skeleton in 1933 to Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, where it was displayed from the 1940s until 1970. The descendant referred to the slave as “Larry†and his name was forgotten at the time.A study by forensic anthropologists at the Quinnipiac University School of Medicine concluded that Fortune was about 5 feet 5 inches tall and died at around 55 years old. He suffered a number of painful ailments, including a fracture in his left hand, a severe ankle sprain and lower back pain. “He was an individual who was in considerable distress,†a forensic professor, Richard Gonzalez said.I was taken by the bizarre story of Mr. Fortune and decided to use it as the stimulus for this work.

“I am not a doctor and cannot legally prescribe any kind of stress-reducing medication for dealing with parents, budgets, students, principals, coaches, dropouts, or whatever else you could add to this list. I love classic literature and movies based on the classics. Great plot lines, complex characters, and the power of love across social and economic boundaries displayed in multilayered stories. (And, of course, the corsets and crinoline.) Recent TV series like Netflix’s Bridgerton have succeeded in bringing these kinds of stories back to mainstream audiences, illustrating that their universal themes endure even today. Each sung monologue in LOVE AND LONGING is drawn from a climactic moment in a work of classic literature. “Whatever our souls are made of†contrasts Cathy’s frozen commitments to social expectation and detached feelings toward her fiancé Edgar Linton with her overwhelming love for Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. In “Mr. Rochester,†Jane Eyre declares her feelings for her employer with uncommon familiarity and boldness. Finally, Mr. Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice is reimagined with a Gilbert and Sullivan-like rhyme scheme, as Darcy humorously enumerates the reasons it would be foolish and improper for him to marryElizabeth, while asking for her hand. The first two texts are taken almost verbatim from passages in the novels, while the lyrics for “Darcy Proposes†are original, freely adapted from several passages.LOVE AND LONGING was conceived as a single work in three parts, to be performed in succession by three different singers. However, performances of the set by two singers instead of three, or of monologues as standalone pieces, are also permissible. The parts were originally written for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and baritone respectively, with alternate versions for mezzo-soprano, soprano, and tenor added later. These arias are well within reach for college students and young professionals, and draw on multiple musical traditions. Performer’s interpretations of the monologues will of course be enriched by reading the novels, and by watching the movies they inspired.

A Requiem for Mr William Lawes is a contemporary work for male voices and viol trio with texts by Thomas Fuller, Antony Wood, and John Jenkins. The music evokes and quotes passages and harmonies from Lawes' consort music; the unresolved dissonances, sometimes verging on atonality, the quirky off-kilter rhythmic structures, and the vocal quality of the lines. A Requiem for Mr William Lawes was first performed on September 7, 2016 by Gallicantus at The Trigonale Festival, Austria. This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill.
