Charmingly packed with wit, grace, symbolism, and irony, Shulamit Ran’s THE FLIGHT OF THE BRAVE CHICKEN celebrates the life and work of a graphic artist and illustrator (who played clarinet), who lost her battle with cancer as a young adult. The six-minute duo begins as a dramatic dialog for bass clarinet and piccolo, gradually evolving to peaceful resolution for flute and clarinet. The work may be performed with projections of the original art panels that inspired the work.Brave Chicken was a character developed by Nina Frenkel, gifted illustrator, graphicartist, and beloved friend to many, who passed away at the age of 43 having lost adifficult battle with cancer. Her parents, Marcel and Anne Frenkel, approached mein May 2017 about composing a short work in Nina’s memory, suggesting that it bebased on four delightful panels that Nina had painted in 2014 before she knew of therecurrence of the disease.Titled “Brave Chicken Meets the Ogre,†“Brave Chicken Fights the Ogre,†“BraveChicken Flees to Safety,†and “Brave Chicken in the Healing Hut,†the four panelsdepict a progression from darkness to light. And while my composition does notattempt to follow the four panels literally, I did aim to create two distinctly differentmusical characters who are posed against one another with one clearly perceived asdominant and threatening, and trace the evolving change in the balance of power,and with it the journey from darkness to light.Inspired by the knowledge that Nina herself greatly enjoyed playing the clarinet, Idecided to pair bass clarinet with piccolo, eventually switching the piccolo over toflute, with clarinet appearing in time for the work’s peaceful conclusion. Though I hadnever met Nina, I felt honored to compose this work in her memory.

This clever work is unlike anything out there and offers some extraordinary colors. Universal Edition presents the last extended version of Boulez' Derive 2 in a 2006 revision. When I reflected on some of Ligeti's compositions, wrote Boulez, I felt the desire to dedicate myself to some almost theoretical research into periodicity in order to systematically examine its overlays, its shifts and its exchange. Tom Service, in The Guardian, describes the work: I had the sense...that although the piece was 45 minutes long, it could either have been 20 minutes or 200 and it wouldn't really have mattered. All of the music you hear in it is based on a single chord (derived - see what I've done there? - from a musical transliteration of the initials of Paul Sacher's name). Everything changes on the surface - there are passages where everything is speeding along vertiginously, which then contract into pools of slower music - but nothing changes underneath. It's a musical world that's completely hermetic and yet infinitely expandable. Weird.

The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown of spring 2020 has affected people’s lives drastically. Gatherings have been stopped, people have been confined to their homes, and physical distancing has become the norm. Composers have responded to these changes in a multitude of ways, for me, it has resulted in the creation of music that uplifts and reconnects people. “The World†sets Archibald Lampman’s powerful poem “Sight,†the words seeming particularly poignant for our times. Working in collaboration with my vocal quartet Anchorae, we invited people from across the world to submit recordings of themselves singing a part of the piece. My early string quartet from Absences, which was written at school, is a first attempt in the sacred genre string quartet, an early preliminary study of my much later five-part string quartet cycle. The basic gesture is carefully groping, the gestures and expressions change from bar to bar, as a multiplicity of adjectives affirmed, which are assigned to the respective figures and gestures.
