This book serves to be a road-map for today’s music educators who are tasked with promoting and fulfilling a rich arts curriculum, while still understanding and incorporating the realities and skill sets required in current and future job markets. Aligning Music to STEM challenges teachers and administrators to rethink the structure of traditional music education, as well as encourages universities to reimagine how they train music educators. It motivates schools and universities to explore their curricula designs and how ideas and lesson plans are being differentiated to promote the integration of STEM in the music classroom. This text outlines ways that we can carefully redesign curricula and explore new approaches that aim to provide students with new opportunities to problem-solve, create, collaborate, and experience the world. Abrahams concludes that as current educators, it is our responsibility to promote new ideas for teaching and learning that lead students to a successful, creative life. —Jamie Sokolowski   Vice Principal, Molin Middle School   Newburyport, Massachusetts Frank Abrahams is Associate Dean and Professor of Music Education at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey. His most current research centers on aligning music instruction to STEM. These are described in his books Planning Instruction in Music and Becoming Musical, co-authored with Ryan John and published by GIA. With Paul Head, he is the author of Case Studies in Music Education, published by GIA, and the Oxford Handbook of Choral Pedagogy (Oxford University Press).

Die Blaserbande is a completely newly developed concept for class and group lessons with woodwind and brass instruments. It is primarily aimed at children of primary school age and is the result of intensive cooperation with music schools, brass bands and primary schools. The tonal range is the same for all instruments, so that all songs and voices can be worked through together. Numerous exercises on approach, posture, intonation and register play, accompanying audio playbacks and a large pool of playing pieces open up new perspectives for the wind class, from small group lessons to representative school auditions and concerts. With the Blaserbande we now have a well thought-out concept for young brass and woodwind players that promises methodically meaningful and musically interesting class instruction. We can look forward to the sequel. (Lutz Gohmann, practicing & making music6/09) 'Die Blaserbande' is an exciting concept for creative and practice-oriented music lessons in elementary schools and will certainly offer many wind orchestras some new ideas for the training of their own offspring (Matthias Riedel, Neue musikzeitung 11/09) Songs for every tonal range, mostly in German and overall in such a way that the kids think it's cool, so they really see themselves as a gang - with real gang songs. [...] But above all, this is the essential characteristic of the wind band: the sound material is the same for all wind instruments! (Bernhard Gortheil, author of the Brass Band, practice & make music 2/10).

Arranger Jonathan Oliver writes, Dvorak's New World Symphony, which is widely considered as his signature work, was composed in 1893 during his time as the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. Although Dvorak claims that his music was original in nature, one can hear the influences of American styles of the time throughout his work. In the Largo movement, it has been stated that possible source music that he used included ideas from an Osage Indian song, African-American spirituals, and even the story of Hiawatha from Longfellow. The opening melody continues to be one of the most recognized melodies throughout music. This arrangement was created to recreate the main themes and ideas of the Largo movement and to give the tuba ensemble the opportunity to perform this mainstay of classical literature..

Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685—1750) SixSonatas and Partitas have captivated violinistsfor centuries. Rachel Barton Pine—havingspent decades studying the music of Bach, his contemporaries, and his predecessors—now offers this unparalleled edition completewith detailed historical notes, performancesuggestions, and downloadable study materialsincluding a new Urtext edition and a speciallyprepared manuscript. Pine’s interpretationis informed by thorough historical study, which has been polished byyears of performance insight, but also encourages those studying Bach’srepertoire to craft their own unique interpretation of these timelessmasterpieces. This edition closely follows Pine’s critically acclaimed 2016recording “Testament: Complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin byJ.S. Bach†(Avie 2360) making it an invaluable resource for any student, teacher, or performer enthralled with J.S. Bach’s long standing legacy.Ms. Pine holds the distinction of being the only American and youngestperson to win the gold medal at the J.S. Bach International ViolinCompetition in Leipzig, Germany, 1992.here is no one right way to play Bach. More thanalmost any repertoire, each individual’s interpretation isas unique as their personality. Though I have spent decadesstudying Bach’s music as well as that of his contemporariesand predecessors, my final rationale for artisticdecisions is often taste and instinct. Every violinist whoundertakes a lifetime’s journey with this incredible repertoireis continually discovering new ideas. Thus, theopinions on the following pages may evolve over time. However, everything in the sheet music closely follows my2016 recording “Testament: Complete Sonatas and Partitasfor Solo Violin by J.S. Bach†(Avie 2360), which I trulyfeel represents the culmination of my exploration intothese extraordinary works. In choosing to present this edition, my hope is thatyou will find useful solutions to challenges of fingering, bowing, and polyphony, and helpful information aboutphrasing. I have also included additional dynamic suggestionswith the hope that trying these ideas will help inspireyou to discover your own. All of these markings aredesigned to work with a baroque violin and baroque bow,a modern violin and baroque bow, or a modern violinand modern bow. While the information in this editionis unusually dense, there is much that I did not include, such as lifts, breaths, articulations, whether to play on oroff the string, metronome markings, details of timing, and emphases other than hemiolas.I offer this book to you in the spirit of Bach: “SoliDeo Gloria.â€.

Foreword by Eric Whitacre Innovation in the Ensemble Arts caps a trilogy of volumes that delves into the building blocks necessary for a vibrant, growing music organization. In the first volume—Mentoring in the Ensemble Arts: Helping Others Find Their Voice—author Tim Sharp examines the mentor/ proteÌgeÌ dynamic and its critical impact on the lives of ensembles and their conductors. In the second volume—Collaboration in the Ensemble Arts: Working and Playing Well with Others— he challenges us to think beyond our traditional confines and to expand our worldview to one that encompasses creative new ideas, concepts, and connections. Now Innovation in the Ensemble Arts lays out the techniques of transformative renewal that enable music educators to lead individual ensemble members in the personal growth that fuels the ensemble’s contributions to the community. Sharp establishes a mindset that can lead to ongoing relevancy and create public value for today’s ensembles. Tim Sharp (BM, MCM, DMA), an active choral conductor, researcher, and writer, is Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the national professional association for choral conductors, educators, scholars, students, and choral music industry representatives in the United States. He is also Artistic Director and Conductor of the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus. In language informed by years of research and personal experience, this book leads us through “Stages in the Process of Innovation,†“Foundational Pillars for Building an Innovation Mindset,†“Creativity versus Innovation,†and “Moving from Innovation to Impact.†Along the way, Sharp presents concrete and practical plans for turning insight into action. Innovation in the Ensemble Arts is not only thought-provoking and inspirational, but it also illustrates how to generate momentum that can propel music ensembles forward in the pursuit of musical excellence.

A big advantage with open tunings is that you'll be able to play chords and melodies more easily, letting the strings ring and getting richer sounds that would be really hard to get with a standard tuning. This is true at the beginning, but later onthings will become more challenging and rewarding even for seasoned professionals. Using different tunings from time to time you'll often find new ideas when you compose your music, either studying new positions or merely by chance, because you'll be forced to think outside your usual frame of mind. Some players employ a particular open tuning as their own standard tuning, like Pierre Bensusan with his DADGAD, giving hismusic a distinctive sound. This book will try to bring you into different sonic landscapes, hopefully leading you to quickly learn new tunes and having fun in the process.
