The magnificent shows at the Moulin Rouge have left their mark on the collective imagination of all who read about them. For decades, a small but spectacular band formed one of the basic ingredients in this internationally famedcabaret theatre. With the first sounds of this composition by Peter Kleine Schaars, the exciting Parisian nightlife immediately comes to mind. The musette takes us to quartier Pigalle, the red-light district of Paris, and when thedoors of the Moulin Rouge open, we hear the recognizable rhythms of a contemporary disco: a combination of the rhythmic cells 8 / 4 and 3 / 14. In addition, the composition has been highlighted with a plentiful and varied use of rhythmic cell 5. Naturally, the themes and accompaniments have been divided equally among all parts. Taneli Kuusisto (1905-88) was a versatile influence in Finnish musical life: composer, pianist, organist, church musician, writer on music, and Rector of the Sibelius Academy. Of the more than 120 solo songs penned by him, Suomalainen rukous (A Finnish Prayer), a setting of a poem by Uuno Kailas composed in 1939 on the eve of the Winter War, has acquired a status all of its own. Uhtceare for Flute, Percussion, Violin and Cello. Composed 2014, published 2016. Score included in UYMP's Firewheel Anthology (ISMN M-57036-615-6), recorded by Dark Inventions. Duration: 8'30. Uhtceare is an Old English word meaning ‘anxiety before dawn’ surely a familiar experience to many, not just the Anglo-Saxons. I particularly associate it with the half-awake, early-morning asthma attacks that I had as a child. The piece starts in a nocturnal, dreamlike state with chords that pulse gently, like the rise and fall of breaths. These swelling patterns become increasingly fraught, while soloists sporadically emerge with a sense of urgency, and culminate in a loud, chaoticpassage where the percussionist moves from tuned Percussion to Drums. Following this, the Flute plays agile, looping figures that are soon mimicked by the Violin and then the Vibraphone. These figures are frenetic but harmonically static, so that when all three instruments are playing them simultaneously, there is a whirlwind of activity that paradoxically seems to remain stationary. I thought this was a fitting musical analogue for the fruitless but insistent circling of anxious early-morning thoughts. A dramatic Cello solo interrupts these imitative cycles and leads the ensemble in a cacophonous final crescendo. Commissioned by Dark Inventions and first performed by them on 8th May 2014 at The Engine House, Manchester.

This lighthearted quodlibet was commissioned by ASTA and premiered at the 2015 conference. It provides a fabulous tool to introduce your students to key musical themes across time. The score plays off of the musician's nocturnal mind to combine twelve historic themes by condensing and expanding them the way our subconscious mind often toys with daytime experiences. In total, this composition celebrates the string player's full potential: Where loyalty to the written note serves the imagination's creative playground. What is composition, if not a grand improvisation captured in a snapshot?

Night Dance is a brief, evocative work for flute or clarinet and guitar. It was originally conceived as one movement of a 45-minute cycle of vocal and instrumental music called Night Songs. Composed in 2007, this cycle was built around night-themed poetry by the spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca. As a work standing on its own, Night Dance has no specific program, but its circling melodic cells, subtly shifting rhythmic grooves, and undulating harmonies evoke, for me, mysterious nocturnal creatures scurrying and dancing through an enchanted night forest.

Philip Moore draws on a lifetime's experience of music for Anglican worship to present Bishop Ken's classic evening hymn in darker, more subjective hues than those of Tallis's Canon, to which it is usually sung congregationally. In particular, a penitential note of strained serenity is struck in this nocturnal plea for repose of body and soul. The voices move quietly in comfortable thirds and sixths to the accompaniment of a questioning five-note figure, a phrase which is rarely absent from the organ part and which subtly questions their prayer for peace in its edgy harmonic and metric ambiguity.

Commissioned on behalf of The Viney Grinberg Duo (Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg) by the University of Queensland School of Music and the Creative Collaboratorium, Handwork was premiered at UQ in August 2015, shortly before its U.S. premiere at Yale School of Music the following month by the Duo (both of whom are YSM alumni). Bresnick points to the multi-faceted aspect of Handwork, including a dreamy fantasia, a nocturne, a folk-song, a Latin-American dance with much prominent counterpoint and poly-metric intrigue..Handwork is many things - a dreamy fantasia, a nocturne, a folk-song, a Latin-American dance with much prominent counterpoint and poly-metric intrigue. Handwork is sometimes tonal with crunchy Prokofiev-like dissonances. There are obvious Bartókian octatonic passages in the development, followed by a Persian free-rhythm Santur variation. A dream-like fragment of a Beethoven minuet briefly appears. The work concludes with a re-statement of the opening subject in it's simple, enigmatic ambiguity.

Four Songs after Rexroth is a night cycle of poems and Chinese translations by Kenneth Rexroth that were chosen so that they might present a linear, nocturnal musical experience. The first song begins in the aura of twilight, before proceeding in the next two songs into a night of innermost thoughts and remembrances. In the last song, at dawn, transfiguration and transcendence is attained. The musical settings seek to evoke the beauty, mystery, anxiety, and sadness of the texts; this leads, in the third song - the emotional crux of the cycle - to the abandonment of conventional text declamation in favor of a non-verbal expression.

Nico Muhly's It Remains To Be Seen was written in 2006 for for full Orchestra and has a duration of approximately 9 minutes. This work was originally written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute''s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky''s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited, occasionally illuminated, dark road filled with arguing, cars, fragments of remembered music, and a constant, propulsive pulse.

This piece was commissioned by the Musica Viva Music Society and its premiere took place on 22 VIII, 2001 during the final concert of the Fifth Lubuska Camerata 2001 International Chamber Music Festival. Since its inception it has enjoyed great popularity and hasfound a place in the repertoire of many violinists, including Kaja Danczowska, Patrycja Piekutowska, Krzysztof Bakowski, Pawel Kuklinski. It comprises three movements played attacca: 1 Lento 2. Allegro 3. Molto lento. The first movement has the nature of a nocturne - Lento - in which the singing, lyrical theme in the violin sound is accompanied by extensive sound planes, forming a slow, static course. In contrast to this, the second part is virtuosic - Allegro in which vibrant movement dominates with sixteenth notes and syncopated rhythms. The shortest of all, the nostalgic third movement, has the character of free improvisation on the violin; in terms of orchestral texture it is a reference to the first part.

Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) dedicated his Cien Sonetos de Amor to his wife and it remains among the world's most revered collections of love poems. Among these one hundred poems is the gorgeous sonnet, Ya eres mia. Thischoral/piano setting joins Lauridsen's previous a cappella composition on a Neruda text, Soneto de la noche, from his choral cycle Nocturnes.

Studio-Pop consists of five movements. The firstmovement, entitled Marching on a String, is anenergetic rock march in a modern rhythm. Next, the charming Dreaming of Summer has beencomposed in three-four time - which is quiteunusual in modern pop music. The inspiration forthe third movement, Chicken-Charley was a youngman selling chicken legs from a stall. His supple, dancing movements can be recognised in the music. The fourth movement, Candlelight is a modern, attractive ballad. Finally, Discoteca takes us along ona night visit to a Spanish discotheque. The concerto is composed in B-flat Major; the solo part is for Trumpet in C. Finished in 1948, the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra was composed by the French composer, conductor and the 1927 winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, Henri Tomasi (1901-1971), and lasts approximately 14 minutes. Dedicated to the trumpeter Ludovic Vaillant, soloist at the National Orchestra, the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra was premiered in Paris in 1949. The first part, which lasts 7 minutes, Allegro and Cadenza, begins with a trumpet cadenza and a quiet snare drum background. The Nocturne follows as the second part of this Concerto, and the Finale, the shortest part of the concerto, ends up with a cheerful cartoon-music theme. Henri Tomasi also composed a variety of concerti for alto saxophone and for trombone, as well as some ballades.

Stavros Angelou is an active, prolific composer from Greece, who has published his first two collections for guitar. This second book features eight works in different styles for the solo guitar, all requiring a very advanced technique and understanding of the instrument and music. Containing works such as 'Prelude and Dance', or 'Nocturnal', or 'Thinking in another beat', each piece is a marvel to play or listen to, but the collection as a whole has a place in every guitarist's home.
