Hopes and worries in the face of a social situation in Germany that the composer found disturbing find expression in this character piece in the Schumann tradition. Past and present enter into dialogue. The text quotation from Heine in the subtitle corresponds to the musical Schubert quotation at the end. The variative figures are reminiscent of a passacaglia. A diabolical dance in the middle section is framed by two parts based on the same material and illustrating nocturnal calm. The work is available as a recording with Felix Brucklacher, clarinet, and Hiroko Arimoto, piano, on the portrait CD released in 2022 on the Genuin Classics label (GEN 22760) on the occasion of the composer's 75th birthday.

Uhtceare for Flute, Percussion, Violin and Cello. Composed 2014, published 2016. Score included in UYMP's Firewheel Anthology (ISMN M-57036-615-6), recorded by Dark Inventions. Duration: 8'30. Uhtceare is an Old English word meaning ‘anxiety before dawn’ surely a familiar experience to many, not just the Anglo-Saxons. I particularly associate it with the half-awake, early-morning asthma attacks that I had as a child. The piece starts in a nocturnal, dreamlike state with chords that pulse gently, like the rise and fall of breaths. These swelling patterns become increasingly fraught, while soloists sporadically emerge with a sense of urgency, and culminate in a loud, chaoticpassage where the percussionist moves from tuned Percussion to Drums. Following this, the Flute plays agile, looping figures that are soon mimicked by the Violin and then the Vibraphone. These figures are frenetic but harmonically static, so that when all three instruments are playing them simultaneously, there is a whirlwind of activity that paradoxically seems to remain stationary. I thought this was a fitting musical analogue for the fruitless but insistent circling of anxious early-morning thoughts. A dramatic Cello solo interrupts these imitative cycles and leads the ensemble in a cacophonous final crescendo. Commissioned by Dark Inventions and first performed by them on 8th May 2014 at The Engine House, Manchester.

Philip Moore draws on a lifetime's experience of music for Anglican worship to present Bishop Ken's classic evening hymn in darker, more subjective hues than those of Tallis's Canon, to which it is usually sung congregationally. In particular, a penitential note of strained serenity is struck in this nocturnal plea for repose of body and soul. The voices move quietly in comfortable thirds and sixths to the accompaniment of a questioning five-note figure, a phrase which is rarely absent from the organ part and which subtly questions their prayer for peace in its edgy harmonic and metric ambiguity.

Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) dedicated his Cien Sonetos de Amor to his wife and it remains among the world's most revered collections of love poems. Among these one hundred poems is the gorgeous sonnet, Ya eres mia. Thischoral/piano setting joins Lauridsen's previous a cappella composition on a Neruda text, Soneto de la noche, from his choral cycle Nocturnes.

This traditional song from Puerto Rico is a whimsical tune about a small, nocturnal tree-frog. It features easy and interesting 2-part writing and the use of percussion instruments including a croaking frog will be fun for a wide range of ages. The piece may be sung entirely in Spanish, entirely in English or in a mixture of both! Fantastic opportunities for musical and multicultural learning.

Vals d'la Masca; Il racconto della Montagna; Sequenze sotterraneeThe Alpinia Suite was commissioned and composed for the festival <> and is dedicated to my friend and colleague Elio Galvagno. It was performed for the first time on August 30, 2011, in the Church of San Giovanni in Saluzzo, by an ensemble of professional and student guitarists from all over Europe. This piece was written to commemorate the first ascent of mount Monviso, by William Mathews, Frederick Jacomb, Jean Baptiste Croz and Michel Croz, exactly 150 years before, on August 30, 1861.The first movement is a small Waltz. I imagined a Masca (a sort of alpine pixie, a teasing sprite), dancing all around the house and playing tricks, mostly harmless and funny. The Masca is a legendary and very important character in the folklore of my valleys, and all rationally inexplicable events of everyday life are ascribed to her - such as objects that cannot be found anymore, holes in flour sacks, salt in sugar bowls...The next two movements are a homage to the Mountains. The Tale is a sort of journal, a bright and peaceful chronicle of a hike uphill, in which the beauty of the place is highlighted by an easy harmony and a sweet melody. After this, Underground sequences evokes that same world in a darker and nocturnal way; the faster pace and the choice of repeated and varying patterns are meant to show the transformation of the former environment into something more complex and tormented. Here mountains are a metaphor of human life, warts and all: their sundrenched slopes and their green pasture grasslands, but also their icy and dangerous northern sides, which demand calm, training and caution.(G. Signorile).

This challenging medium advanced Latin original hails from Mike Tomaro's extended work, Nightowl Suite, a musical account of a night in the life of the quintessential jazz fanatic. This movement finds our nocturnal fan going home as the city awakes for some much needed sleep after a night of listening to jazz. This movement can be played alone or programmed with the other two movements published separately. Duration ca 11:30.
