The Eroica according to the Complete EditionExploring the Eroica is the name of the essay with which the editor made herself known back in 1998 and which contributed decisively to the research into the complex transmission. Written in 1803, the autograph of the work is lost today. The title Sinfonia Eroica is already found in the first edition (but only there as well). The main source of the edition is the copy of the score, which was carefully examined and emended by Beethoven, and into which he made corrections even after the appearance of the first printed set of parts. In addition, the copies of the parts used for first performances (before publication) as well as the extremely error-filled first edition of the instrumental parts are also relevant; more so, however, is another printed set that Beethoven personally revised. Thanks to the new performance material, the musical text of the new Beethoven Complete Edition can now also be heard alternatively to the Breitkopf Urtext edition by Peter Hauschild (PB/OB 5233).

Adonai Malach (Psalm 93) was commissioned by Congregation Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun in Milwaukee, as part of a 1985 conference of composers and cantors, where each composer was paired with a cantor and assigned a text from the Jewish liturgy. The challenge I set for myself was to make this short piece melodically appropriate for Cantor Abraham Lubin's beautiful cantorial style, while, at the same time, at least hinting at a harmonic style more inclusive than that what is generally heard in a Shabbat Service setting. As I found out, there is a Jewish mode specifically associated with Adonai Malach, and bearing its name, the intervallic properties which are quite intriguing: taking a major scale as a point of reference, this mode as a major third for third scale degree, but minor third at the tenth, a minor seventh at the seventh scale degree, but a half-step leading tone. The vocal and horn parts of my piece, complementing one another, loosely conform to this pitch arrangement through much of the piece. The woodwind trio (piccolo, oboe and clarinet) treated for the most part in block fashion, offer a counter-part of a considerably more dissonant, one might say pungent, style. Throughout I have attempted to preserve the exultant quality of the text. Adonai Malach is a small offering to my beloved father, to whom it is dedicated..

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.

When composing his Spanish Dances (HN 1370), the composer and violin virtuoso Sarasate united existing material - folk songs and songs by well-known composers - with his own uniquely charming musical language. The two Dances op. 22, “Romanza andaluza†and “JotaNavarra,†were completed in 1878 during Sarasate's first concert tour through Scandinavia. After their initial performances, the lyrical “Romanza†soon outstripped its brilliant sister piece in popularity, and thereafter it was one of Sarasate's compositions that he played most often himself. Since then, this piece has lost nothing of its charm, and it is now available as a stand-alone edition in the Henle catalogue.

Written in 1809, E. T. A. Hoffmanns Miserere remained unprinted and unperformed during the composers lifetime. With its rich contrasts, the work is like a bridge thrown between the musical idiom of his time and the style of the Palestrina school, which Hoffmann so admired. There are a few short five-part a cappella passages that resemble the Palestrina style. Overall, however, the small-segmented structure of the work is definitely noteworthy. None of the twelve movements lasts longer than five minutes. Diary entries confirm the composers inner tension. On 16 January 1809, for example, Hoffmann while working on this piece writes: rather unhealthy state, more like a romantic-religious feeling. With its rich contrasts, E. T. A. This cantata, from an important manuscript in Berlin containing 18 Albinoni cantatas for soprano and continuo, is on the familiar subject of the separation of lovers. The protagonist is the male lover about to depart, who expresses pain at leaving his beloved, promises to remain true to her and finally begs her to dry her tears since he is confident that, somehow, they will be reunited. Unusually for Albinoni, there are three arias, the third of which is dance like in the composer's best faux naïf vein. The first aria is noteworthy for its vigorous bass line, whose jagged quality contrasts strongly with the smoothness of the vocal line.

1. Choral: An improbably superimposing of Beethoven and Brahms. At the end of the first performance of the latter's 1st Symphony, someone asked the composer: Don't you find that your main theme remin ds one of the Ode to Joy? To which he retorted: Even an idiot would have noticed it! 2. Fugue: in the last exposition, the subject of Fugue I from volume 1 of Bach's Well-Tempered Keyboard is super imposed on the theme from Mozart's so-called easy sonata. 3. Passion: In his Violin Concerto, Mendelssohn, to whom we owe the rediscovery of Bach's Passions, seems to have borrowed a theme from a lost Passion. 4. Recitativo: Tribute to Franck's tribute to Bach in his Sonata for violin and piano. 5. Invention: A private revenge, after a bitter failure. Debussy's Toccata was on the compulsory list for the Conservatory piano class entrance exam. 6. Arpeggione: In which the listener realizes the similarity in the introduction to Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and Arpeggione Sonata. 7. Sarabande: The most iconoclastic, for Bach's 5th Cello Suite is already suffused with harmony. There might be an evocatioin of a Brahms-like overarching structure, though... 8. Variation: The slowest variation ever written on Paganini's 24th Caprice. 9. Scene: Schumann's Reverie as a Prelude. 10. Finale: In order to capture the elusive harmony of the Finale of Chopin's Sonate Funebre. 11. Fugue on Au clair de la lune: Our greatest nursery rhymes, fugue fitted and choralized. 12. Fugue de Noel (Christmas fugue): Quite appropriate. 13. Fugue on J'ai du bon tabac: Prohibited counterpoint. 14. Fugue on La Marseillaise: Franco-German reconciliation. 15. Pedal - Exercitium: Realization and conclusion of Bach's organ pedal exercies.

In his comic opera Banditenstreiche, Suppé uses all the qualities that have made him so well-loved by a wide audience. The appealing music is brimming with unexpected ideas and written in a light and fluent style. There’s much to enjoy with elegant arias and ensembles, pure Viennese waltzes and attractive ballet music. The arrangement of the overture contains many highlights from this opera and makes a superb light item for any concert.

Year 6 (age 10-11): In this seventh book of the series the authors complete the upper junior stage, using the same format as that for Year 5. Designed to extend skill acquisition in performance, improvising and composing, listening and appraising, and notating music, pupils are challenged by increasingly demanding musical material. At the same time there is an emphasis on pupils acquiring knowledge and expertise of the deep structures of a range of music, and a greater acknowledgement of musical purpose and context. Attuned to the range of National Curriculum experiences, particular features of this book are: a consolidation and deepening of vocal and instrumental techniques and performance; an integrated approach to improvising and composing, combining skills in listening and appraising, knowledge and understanding; a module focusing on aural observation, representation, recording and notation of sound; an active, analytical and frequently physical approach to listening and appraising; a focus on music in its social and historical context in relation to dance.

From a short French poem by Antoine Thiollier, Stephenson uses an Oulipian process to amalgamate the words with similar sounding English words to gradually abstract the meaning behind them; the words seemingly melt into musical sounds. The hypnotic nature of the guitar writing allows this to happen almost imperceptibly with long phrases of sustained emotional atmosphere rising and falling quite naturally before the music appears to gently evaporate at the close. The way in which the two languages merge is a touching reflection of the fact that Stephenson and (Heloise) Werner, friends since childhood in Paris, both moved to the UK to study and there continued their long friendship. (Colin Alexander).
