For this work in popular style, Roland Kernen uses two well-known Christmas melodies. In the introduction we hear “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” followed by a lively version of “Silent Night.” Subsequently, the attractive carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” is featured more extensively. Two for Christmas is a fine addition to your contemporary Christmas repertoire.

Joseph Leopold Eybler had frequent contacts with the great composers of his day: both Joseph Haydn and Albrechtsberger were his teachers and friends, and he had a close friendship with Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn. His major Christmas oratorio Die Hirten bei der Krippe zu Bethlehem (1794) was composed four years before Haydn's Die Schopfung (The Creation). The almost operatic work displays a wealth of different facets: from the virtuoso aria, through the tranquil depiction of nature in music, to the portrayal of the most heartfelt emotions. As a true jewel of Viennese classicism, Die Hirten (The Shepherds) is a worthwhile addition to the Christmas repertoire. Score available separately - see item CA.9700700.

With this pastoral Christmas cantata by the long-serving Royal Hofkapellmeister of Vienna, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, we wish to draw attention to a prominent baroque composer whose vocal and instrumental works have yet to achieve their historical place in the early music scene which they richly deserve. Schmelzer's easily performable pastoral music is characterized by simple melodic lines in an alpine idiom, partly in the style of Venetian baroque opera. A texture of five to seven voices alternates with settings for one or two voices accompanied by continuo.

WATCHNIGHT is, in many ways, a traditional Christmas Eve service, with all of the moments that have defined similar services over the years; quiet music, children reading the Christmas Story, candlelight and communion. But this musical worship time is a quiet celebration of waiting, a rekindling of the child's soul in all of us, a reminder that the mystery and magic of God's plan for Christmas Day is still alive...if we will see it again through the eyes of a child. Walk through WATCHNIGHT with an open heart, let your childlike soul be “led home†through the singing of carols, and the hearing of the Christmas Story, enacted by children. Share the Lord's Supper and the lighting of candles to welcome the Child. Know that the Child of Bethlehem wishes to have the child of your soul holding His hand. Tiny Babe of Bethlehem Won't you take my hand again; Wake the child that has my name, So I will never be the same.
