In the style of commedia dell'arteIn 1918 Gabriel Faure, then 73 years old, received a commission from Prince Albert I of Monaco to write stage music invoking the atmosphere of the commedia dell'arte.The four-movement orchestral suite op. 112, consisting of Ouverture, Menuet, Gavotte and Pastorale, combines previously unpublished parts of this stage music. The Pastorale of 1919 was Faure's last composition for orchestra, the Ouverture originated in a piece of 1864 for piano duet and the original version of the Gavotte was written for piano as early as 1869. The op. 112 orchestral suite demonstrates how the composer, now older and more experienced, reworked and improved his earlier music.This scholarly-critical edition of the four-movement Masques et Bergamasques op. 112 is based on Gabriel Faure The Complete Works, Volume IV/2.

Hymne an die Nacht is a deeply moving theme by the master composer Ludwig van Beethoven. It is taken from his Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (Appassionata), which he composed between 1804-1806. This theme originates from the second movement of this famous sonata which Beethoven himself considered his best work in this genre. The passion of this sonata inspired Michael Bilkes to make this beautiful arrangement. Hymne an die Nacht is een ontroerend thema van meestercomponist Ludwig van Beethoven. Het is afkomstig uit zijn sonate nr. 23 in F-mineur, opus 57 (Appassionata), die hij componeerde in 1804-1806. Dit thema komt uithet tweede deel van deze beroemde sonate, die door Beethoven zelf werd beschouwd als zijn beste. Het inspireerde Michael Bilkes tot het schrijven van deze mooie bewerking.Die Hymne an die Nacht ist ein bewegendes Thema aus der Sonate Nr. 23 in f-Moll, op. 57 (Apassionata) von Ludwig van Beethoven, welche er in den Jahren 1804-1806 komponierte. Serenade No. 1 (Op. 11) was composed in 1858, while Brahms enjoyed a position in the tiny court of Detmold, the capital of the Principality of Lippe. The original work, now lost, is said to have been scored for chamber orchestra with a wind section of flute, two clarinets, horn and bassoon. Unfortunately only Brahms’ later version for full orchestra remains. Using Brahms’ full orchestral score, and retaining as much of the instrumental colour as possible, Chris Nex has arranged this Serenade for the modern grouping of wind quintet, string quartet and double bass.
