Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000700.

An unusual feature of this Mass is its cyclic form, a compositional principle which Mozart first introduced in his masses in this Mass in C: in the Agnus Dei (Dona nobis pacem) he reverted to the music of the Kyrie, thus giving the Mass overall musical unity. Another unusual feature of this work is its popular character. This is evident both in its catchy themes and in its relatively straigthforward musical structure. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4062600.

Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron Saint of bridges, Johannes Nepomuk (ca. 1340-1393, canonized in 1729). Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn's second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass. Like the Missa Sancti Amandi (1776), the Nepomuk Mass does not employ vocal soloists. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5031400.

Johann Heinrich Rolle was born in 1716 in Quedlinburg. In 1752 he was appointed music director of the city of Magedburg. The cantata Siehe Finsternis bedeckt das Erdreich und Dunkel der Volker was written for the feast of Christmas. We do not know the year of its first performance. The libretto is by Johann Samuel Patzke. The cantata comprises six movements, framed by an extended and festively-orchestrated opening chorus and a simple four-part chorale movement. The first movement, with its unusual harmonies and contrasting tempi, is very distinctive. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1002500.

Whitman’s epic “Song of the Open Road†is an inspiring metaphor encouraging us to find and explore our own paths, free of anchors or artificial boundaries. Dorff uses 5 brief passages from the poem as movement titles, setting the stage for a suite of sometimes-edgy soliloquies in which the music (and the flutist) explores these open roads.
