The text originated from the Kantatenjahrgang (yearly cantata cycle), Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer (Evangelical Devotional Offering) by the secretary of the Weimar high conistory, Salomon Franck. The sermon text for the 16th Sunday after Trinity, the raising of the boy from the dead at Nain (Luke 7: 11-14), is only indirectly reflected in Franck's cantata text. In a prevalent interpretation from that period of this biblical text, the raising of the dead is seen as an allegory for the resurrection of the faithful. The cantata Ich freue mich in dir was first performed during Bach's second year as Thomaskantor, on the 3rd day of Christmas, and belongs to the so-called annual cycle of chorale cantatas. Here the focus of the composition is the hymn of the same name by Philipp Ziegler, in which the first and final strophes were adopted, word for word, in the first and sixth movements of the cantata. The soprano, which carries the chorale, is supported by the conrnett (Zink), which already at this time had become a seldom-used instrument. The joyful, lively choral movement with instrumental interludes directly follows the first aria, and begins with a marked, ascending motive at the word Getrost! (safely). The oboes d'amore which accompany the alto lend the movement a special color. In the second aria (for soprano), Bach again shows himself to be the master of text interpretation. The two-part cantata from Bach's third cycle of cantatas was performed for the first time on 4 August 1726 (the 7th Sunday after Trinity). The large-scale opening chorus for full forces to a text from Psalm 104 shows in its formal diversity Bach at the height of his powers. The second part of the cantata begins with a biblical text (Matthew 6, 31 ff.), not as a choral movement here, but as an extended bass arioso (Vox Christi). A meditative soprano aria with solo oboe forms the high point of the second part. Bach re-used the opening chorus, both the arias and even the bass arioso later in the G minor Mass BWV 235. W. F. Bach's sinfonias were composed largely during his tenure in Dresden (1733-1746). They are contributions to a new and scarcely formed genre which was also preoccupying other young composers at that same time. In contrast to the capricious, humorous sinfonias BR-WFB C 1-6, the two-movement Sinfonia in D minor (C 7) is an unusually serious and compactly worked-out piece. The sinfonia belongs to an extensive repertoire of similar orchestral works which were performed as instrumental graduals during the celebration of the Mass in the Catholic Court Church in Dresden. Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the last generation of composers of the 18th century who, in addition to the popular Passion oratorios, continued to write oratorio Passions using biblical texts. From his pen a Passion for each of the four Gospels has survived. With sensitive arias, unusal orchestral sound and expressive turba choruses Homilius translated the traditional Passion to his times. It was surely not a coincidence that in Hamburg Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachr resorted primarily to the Passions of Homilius, especially the St. Mark Passion, which he first performed in an abridged version in 1770 and whose music he employed in 14 of his 21 pasticcio Passions.
