Odd Meter Clave for Drumset uses a unique approach to odd time signatures, taking the tried and tested rhythms of Cuba and adjusting them to fit various meters. Beginning with an in depth study of the various claves and their qualities, moving on to the basic rhythms in 4/4 which are the templates for their odd meter counterparts. The odd meter section is divided into 3 chapters, clave in 5, 7 and 9. In each section there is an analysis of odd meter pulse, the clave and their relationship. The student then builds the rhythms of Mambo, Songo, Guaguanco, Mozambique etc. to fit the new claves. These rhythms work on many different levels, as odd meter learning tools, as co-ordination studies or just great sounding grooves. Finally there is a chapter on building your own claves. Here we see some of the possible permutations that can be created by combining and adjusting claves, allowing the student to create original claves on which to build their own unique patterns. Earth and Sky was commissioned by the BBC for the Proms 2000 season. In keeping with the millennial theme, a work presenting a vision of the future was requested. Trying to be helpful, the BBC provided me with the predictions of various pundits, but their ideas seemed dizzyingly contradictory. Then the simple thought struck me that however varied and complex the answers, the big questions will always remain the same. We may now have a map of the human genome, but how to use the map? How shall I know where I should go? How may I see the I that's me?
As a musician I am hopeful that, no matter how the world develops, future generations will still come together to dance and sing and play. The mysterious power of music to bind us socially and inspire us individually seems to be built into our genes. So, a song of questions; a song about music---these were the ideas which I took to Vikram Seth, who had generously agreed to write the words for me. The resulting poem provided lots of inspiration. It is entirely monosyllabic, enabling considerable variety of rhythmic treatment. I love its permutations and its imagery of paradox and inversion and I have amused myself by playing similar games with the musical material. But there is seriousness as well as fun---the text's juxtaposition of the certainty of death with the search for purpose in life achieves great poignancy when sung by young voices.

George Perle, now an instructor at the University of Louisville, was born in 1915, in Bayonne, New Jersey. He began work on the Third String Quartet in 1946 in Japan and completed it the following year in New York City. It was presented for the first time at a concert of the Forum Group of the International Society for Contemporary Music, in New York City on Feb. 7, 1948. The work is based on the following twelve-tone series, and its permutations and transpositions: d; e-flat; a-flat; b; c; f-sharp; c-sharp; f-natural; g; a; e; b-flat. The score is arranged in the present publication in such a way as to render unnecessary the extraction of parts for performance. Each player may read his part directly from a copy of the score.

This work for Tuba and Brass Band was commissioned by and written for internationally renowned tuba soloist Steve Sykes. The Tuba plays four notes (F, Bb, G, C) during the opening. All the themes and much of the harmonic structure are based on these fours notes and their permutations. The soloist receives ample opportunity to showcase his or her technical prowess and expressive capabilities. Fantasia for Tuba also provides plenty of interaction between the soloist and brass band.
