Concert Duets is a collection of 14 arrangements of works by prominent 18th-century composers, mostly taken from Trio Sonatas. Duet 11 is a Jim Self original work in the Rococo style; and Duets 12, 13 and 14 are arrangements of the three-movements of the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. Included with this edition are play-along recorded tracks by tubist Zach Collins, who also served as editor of the current edition.I created these duets as Christmas gifts for my tuba playing friends, with the first duet being arranged in 1976. All 14 of the duets are challenging and fun to play and are especially effective as concert pieces. As a young musician I had the privilege of playing duets with many of the world’s finest tubists including Harvey Phillips, John Fletcher, Bob Pallansch, Chester, Schmitz, Dan Perantoni, Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop, Winston Morris and Tommy Johnson. I learned more about playing music in these duo sessions than from any other musical activity I have ever experienced. Duets are powerful teaching tools for learning and mastering rhythm, phrasing and intonation and for developing overall musicianship.Jim Self:Self (b. 1943) is a Los Angeles free-lance musician, a veteran of thousands of Hollywood motion pictures, television shows and records, and tuba soloist on many prominent movies. His tuba was the “Voice of the Mothership†in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He is Principal Tuba/Cimbasso with the Pacific and Pasadena Symphonies and the Los Angeles Opera and Hollywood Bowl Orchestras. Formerly he was in The U.S. Army Band and tuba / euphonium professor at the University of Tennessee. He holds a DMA from the USC Thornton School of Music where he is Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Chamber Music. His compositions and arrangements include works for solo tuba, brass quintet, other brass, string and woodwind chamber music, wind band and orchestra. Jim has produced many solo jazz and classical recordings. His music and recordings are available from Potenza Music and www.jimself.com. Jim Self is a Yamaha Performing Artist.Zach Collins, editor:Zach Collins is professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2019, he released his first solo album, Chronicle. It was recognized with the 2021 ITEA Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording for the best Solo Tuba Album. His interpretation of William Kraft’s Encounters II for Solo Tuba was released on Cambria Master Recordings. Four movements, top part advanced. Several recordings and many broadcasts. Duration c.13'.Programme Notes:The Swiss composer Joseph Lauber was born at Ruswil near Lucerne in 1864. After studying with Heger in Zürich and Rheinberger in Munich, Lauber worked with Diémer and Massenet in Paris. With Massenet he learnt a great deal about orchestration, a subject that he subsequently taught until the end of his life at the Geneva conservatoire as well as piano and composition. He died in 1952.Lauber's 193 catalogued works are many and varied. He wrote for all instruments and in every genre except oratorio and opera. Among his output areseveral works for double bass, most written for Prof. Hans Fryba, a personal friend with whom he worked as a double bass and piano recital duo. Fryba was one of the leading players in Europe in his day and was principal of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. First was Theme and Variations (1936-7) and a Rhapsodie with orchestra (1937). Three Walzes followed in 1939, a Gavotte and Gigue, a Sonata and then in 1943 Fantasie de Concert, written for the Geneva Competition. Four Caprices appeared in 1942, the same date as the Quartet for double basses which was dedicated to Fryba and written for the Berlin Philharmonic Double Bass Quartet, one of the first ever such ensembles to exist. The Quartet for double basses was revived by Klaus Stoll in the 1970s for the Philharmonic Double Bass Quartet at that time to play. It was subsequently published in 1975 by Yorke Edition by kind permission of the composer's son Edmund Lauber. Rodney Slatford 2004

A sacrilege or a stroke of genius? The composer and music director Gottlob Benedict Bierey (1772-1840) orchestrated the first movement of the famous Moonlight Sonata' by Beethoven (transposed to C minor) and added a four-part choral movement to it, which he underlaid with the text of the Kyrie from the Latin mass. The result is as astounding as it is harmonious! Versions for choir and organ, and choir and piano (both like the original version in C sharp minor) are also available (Carus 28.009/45 and in 28.009/03). Score available separately - see item CA.2800900.

The date of composition of the cantata Lobe den Herren, meine Seele can only be conjectured. However, several indications suggest an early composition, possibly during Kuhnau's stay in Zittau. The work is one of only two known cantatas by Kuhnau in which cornetti are scored - the second work is the cantata Christ lag in Todes-Banden (PB 32034) -, even so in combination with three trombones as an early baroque wind section. In addition, the musical texture of the introductory Sonata can certainly be understood as a reminiscence of the polychorality known from the Renaissance and early Baroque as well as their connection with the basso continuo era, since four strings and bassoon on the one side and five wind instruments on the other side face each other over a continuous continuo part. The text of the cantata is a selection of a few verses from Psalm 103. This is the larger scored cantata with this textual basis; parallel to it exists a smaller scored one for alto, bass, violin, oboe d'amore and continuo.

Soaring is a work commissioned by the G. Ray Bodley High School Bands under the direction of Terrance Caviness in Syracuse, New York. The work is dedicated to my dear friend David Bamonte, who is currently the Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Oregon Symphony in Portland, Oregon. David, Terry and I have been friends and colleagues for many years and were looking for a project to collaborate with each other. This work was originally written for Trumpet and Concert Band, but I quickly realized that it would work really well with a piano accompaniment as well. The result is the work you see here. As a trumpet player myself, I grew up studying the works of Arban, Clarke, Hindemith, Arutunian, Hummel, Haydn and the more modern sonatas by Kent Kennan and Halsey Stevens. This music is an homage to these great masters while keeping my original voice intact. At times, the piece is lush and lyrical while other moments showcase the power and majesty of the trumpet sound. The music is even a touch athletic while having a musical conversation with the piano. Enjoy the journey of discovering this exciting new work for you and your students. --Sean O'Loughlin.Soaring is a work commissioned by the G. The cantata Daran erkennen wir, dass wir in Ihm bleiben is intended for the first Whitsun holiday. It is based on a text by Johann Christoph Wentzel (1659-1723), the yearly volume in which it appears dates to August 4, 1703 and is dedicated to, among others, Hn. Joh. Kuhnau / | Chori Musici bey der | Stadt Leipzig Directori [Herr Joh. Kuhnau / Director of Choral Music at the City of Leipzig]. It can be assumed that Kuhnau's composition originated near the time of the text, thus within his first years in office as the Leipzig St. Thomas cantor. Kuhnau follows the structure of Wentzel's poem in a Dictum and four verses with introductory sonata, although some details are varied. In comparison to other works by Kuhnau, the scoring is fairly large with five vocal parts, trumpets, timpani, oboes, and bassoon as well as two violins and violas each. The short performing time, on the other hand, makes the cantata suitable for liturgical use, too.Audio samples: Opella Musica, camerata lipsiensis, cond. Gregor Meyer (cpo, 2013).
