In the summer of 1852, Vier Stücke ['Four Pieces'] for viola and piano by Robert Schumann were published under the title Märchenbilder ['Fairy-Tale Pictures'] by the Kassel publishing house Luckhardt, with a particularly expressive vignette on the titlepage. Unusual were both this title Märchenbilder, on the one hand, and the scoring with a solo viola, on the other. With the viola in a soloistic role in chamber music, Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, offers a rather unfamiliar, but all the more delightful sound.

An imaginative first violin book, featuring 12 music sketches with fingering and tips on technique and reading music, inspired by the composer's experience teaching a young boy named Peter, and the musical pictures they painted together.Composer and critic Cyril Carr Dalmaine graduated from the Royal College of Music and was Music master at Uppington School before going on to become chorus master to the BBC. He is most famous for coining the term 'Lord Haw-Haw' in his work as radio critic of the Daily Express under the pseudonym Jonah Barrington, in reference to the Nazi propaganda broadcasts of William Joyce during the Second World War.Dalmaine was also a record presenter in the pre-1955 days and responsible for the 'discovery' of the then deceased Italian tenor, Alessandro Valente, giving Valente enjoyed a considerable posthumous vogue. As a composer Dalmaine wrote chamber music, and transcribed the cantatas of J.S. Bach to piano as well as a wide range of piano and string works published by Forsyth. His works such as Variation from Versailles and Pathway to the Proms remain in print and are well worth re-discovering, while his arrangements of popular classics in our Silhouette Series remain best sellers.

The powerful intensity of colour and expressiveness of the mosaic images in the apse and altar area of the late antique church of San Vitale (from the 6th century) in Ravenna made a lasting impression on Zsigmond Szathmáry. The fascination of how imposing images emerge from tiny, luminous mosaic cubes and vividly tell the biblical stories inspired the composer to write his piano piece: In my composition, I tried to follow this path: to organise the smallest coloured and angular glass cubes â?? that is, the smallest coloured and angular musical miniature events â?? in such a way that they constantly grow and finally culminate in a tangible musical statement. Despite this seemingly archaic procedure, the composer wants his piece to be understood as a continuation of the virtuoso piano music tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Mosaikbilder â?? (Mosaic Pictures) are dedicated to the great Hungarian pianist Zsoltán Kocsis, for whom they were written in 2012.

Ravel's brilliant compositional interpretation of the Pictures at an Exhibition is, to this day, the most famous and independent orchestration of Mussorgsky's masterpiece. When the French composer turned his attention to his Russian colleague's piano cycle in 1922, he was at the height of his mastery and Paris was enraptured by Russian music. Notated with remarkable accuracy in an autograph score, Ravel's orchestration was an audience favorite from the very start. Jean-Francois Monnard, who previously edited the Breitkopf Urtext editions of Bolero, La Valse and Rapsodie espagnole, presents a text in which even the tiniest detail is authentic. The edition not only eliminates many previously undiscovered errors, but also offers a wealth of practical information on the long and multi-faceted performance history of the work, including the metronome markings of great conductors who were connected to the work in a very special manner.Bibliography:Mayer, Stephan: Sonne fur die Seele. The teachers under whom Ãrpád Balázs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift Ãrpád Balázs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Négy kép (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given thetitle Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Induló (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Játék (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! Tarjan, Hungarian Pictures is a work in three movements commissioned by the town of Vesoul and its concert band. This work pays tribute to Jean-Marie Goux, the bands former musical director, who had forged strong links with Hungary: whether in the village of Tarjan or Budapest itself, he had shared his zest for life with the Hungarian people. This colourful work consists of three movements: The 7th Tribe, Eternal Fidelty and Conquest of the Homeland. It offers not only strong musical content, but also historical insight about a beautiful region with a great tradition.
