Secret Geometry can be heard as a short piano sonata, with the movements forming a typical fast--slow--fast pattern. The electronic sounds on tape are tightly interworven with the piano, often serving to extend and transform the piano's sound. The goal is to create a hybrid sound world. The phrase secret geometry is used to describe the play of forms in certain paintings, referring to structural patterns that are used to organize the pictorial elements. Since the electronic medium permits a composer to focus on the micro-structure of individual sounds, as well as more customary concerns with patterns of pitch and rhythm, it seemed appropriate to choose a title that emphasizes the careful shaping of every compositional element. But this is not to neglect the spiritual impulse of the work. After all, the obscure motion of the Holy Spirit herself describes a secret geometry, what Thomas Merton called a hidden wholeness. Written for the distinguished pianist Aleck Karis, Secret Geometry was composed with the assistance of a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. The tape was realized in the Presser Electronic Music Studio of the University of Pennsylvania.

Helmut Lachenmann wrote his Toccatina for the volume Studien zum Spielen Neuer Musik fur Violine (EB 8356) edited by Igor Ozim and published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1986. No one could foresee back then that this Etude for violin solo would take on an active life of its own. The piece was first seen as a model of new string techniques, as David Alberman explained in his 1998 essay Beyond the Conventional, published in the journal The Strad. But in the meantime, Lachenmann's Toccatina, which truly does abound in unusual techniques, appears increasingly often on the programs of international festivals of contemporary music. This does justice to the work, which is, in effect, a delicate, fragile and introverted recital piece. Its title contains the word toccare (Italian for to touch); the composer took this definition literally and transposed it impressively into his piece. Wernick’s music often exhibits subtle wit underlying a serious exterior, sometimes with warming references to past musical heritage. The title SONATINA evokes works of Clementi and Kuhlau, typically concise three-movement pieces intended for piano students as stepping stones toward more advanced repertoire. Wernick’s SONATINA was composed for his former student James Primosch, a virtuoso pianist as well as his successor as composition professor at University of Pennsylvania – using the 18th-century student sonatina reference for subtle irony in this advanced work.
