For his ParisCythere assiegee, Gluck drew on his eponymous opera comique from 1759, transforming it into an opera-ballet. The libretto which was expanded by Charles Simon Favart was adapted: Gluck added recitative passages, reworked individual sections and also added his own compositions, modifying them in parts. By March 1775, the compositional work had progressed sufficiently for Gluck to leave behind a copy of the score as he departed from Paris. However, he was unable to supervise rehearsals or be present at the premiere (1 August 1775) or any of the subsequent 21 performances. Due to these particular circumstances, three versions of the work are to be distinguished: the original version, the performed version and the printed version. This edition ofCythere assiegeecontains the original version of the main part and is printed here for the first time. The reconstruction which was necessary in order to determine the original form of this opera draws on all orchestral parts, the printed score and with regard to a large gap in Act III, pages were taken from the score copy. The four-part appendix includes the changes made to this score copy, sections that deviate from the printed score as well as the final version of Act III, also from the printed score. The last part of the appendix also presents a Divertissement in six movements by Berton, which is only available as a rare contemporary set of printed parts. The Foreword offers detailed information regarding the work's genesis, subject matter, preparations for performance and print, premiere, reception, and this edition. Selected pages from significant musical sources, the libretto of the premiere performance, and images illuminating the performance context, have been added as facsimiles.

Beethoven’s “Diabelli Variationsâ€, written between 1819 and 1823, mark the pinnacle of his oeuvre for variations and next to Bach’s “Goldberg Variations†form one of the most important contributions to this genre. In addition to Beethoven, 50 other composers from Austria, mainly Vienna, followed Diabelli’s call to create variations for his famous waltz, among them Czerny, Moscheles, Fr. X. Mozart, Schubert, the 11-year-old Liszt and J. N. Hummel. The variations first printed by Diabelli fictively as “Fatherlandish Union of Artists Part I†(Beethoven’s op. 120) and “Part II†(the 50 variations of Vienna’s “most excellent composers and virtuososâ€) are presented here by Mario Aschauer for the first time in one edition. Furthermore the variations of Part II appear in an Urtext edition for the first time. The musical text is based on a meticulous study of the sources and for the first time relevant discrepancies between the main sources are presented in light grey print.A detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) and notes regarding Viennese piano performance practice during Beethoven’s day complete this special Urtext edition based on the most current research.

Mendelssohn's setting of Psalm 98 was written in a few weeks to satisfy a commission in his new position as general music director of Prussia and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on 1 January 1844. As he neither released the work for publication nor produced a vocal score, his psalm setting did not appear in print until after his death. For this edition the authoritative Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper drew primarily on the autograph score with its many subsequent corrections and amendments. In this way it differs from many other editions, which tend to treat the autograph as a subordinate source. Rounding off the edition are an informative Foreword and a detailed Critical Commentary. The piano reduction is based on the first printed edition, published by F. Kistner and Evers & Co. in 1851.

In Die Last-tragende Liebe oder Emma und Eginhard (1728) several strands and levels of plot are interwoven in complex fashion. The serious is intertwined with the comic, affairs of state with the individually human. People of high rank and lower rank communicate with each other, one group perfectly understanding the language of the other and even capable of speaking it if necessary.Charlemagne, emerging victorious from a war, learns that his daughter Emma and his secretary Eginhard have fallen in love with each other. As Emperor, Charlemagne, pressed by his wife Fastrath, has to oppose this relationship, but as a loving father he comes into conflict, as Emma has to decide between her love or a marriage befitting her social standing. In addition to this, Emma is wooed by Prince Heswin who in turn is loved by Emma’s friend Hildegard. The servant Barbara, who is pursued by the factotum Urban, is in love with Eginhard, but it is Steffen, the commentator on everything, who succeeds in winning her.Telemann’s highly complex music, expressive and emotional, artistic and stylish, is suited to each and every situation and level – “an incomprable masterpiece by Herr Telemann who is never praised enoughâ€, as the printed libretto stated.

Over the years Janácek’s uvre has increasingly received the recognition it so richly merits and performances of his works are becoming more and more frequent. This development is, however, offset by a manuscript tradition so disorderly that some of Janácek’s works continue, as before, to be played in versions which are heavily adapted, corrupt or otherwise contrary to the composer’s intentions. Thus, a critical edition of Janácek’s music is indispensable for scholars and performers alike. This edition presents an authentic printed text based on all available sources for each work. In addition to the musical text, each volume also contains a critical report (Czech/German), a rendition of deleted or rejected versions, and a comprehensive appendix of facsimiles.

When we think of the cello, we automatically think of Bach’s immortal cello suites. They are the very core of cello literature, their timeless beauty accompanying cellists from their student years throughout the height of their professional careers.Considering the works’ significance, the great number of editions in existence is not surprising. However, the composer’s autograph has not been preserved and is considered lost. This circumstance creates an exceptional challenge many editors faced over the years. The four autograph sources still in existence and the first print from 1824 show numerous small deviations, especially in terms of articulation markings and phrasing. In this two-volume edition of Bach’s cello suites, Andrew Talle now presents an entirely new view of the relationships between existing sources. The first volume contains the edited musical text, which comes as close to the composer’s original intention as the surviving source material allows: “This edition does not constitute a perfect reconstruction of the lost autograph; that is something no editor could claim to accomplish. Instead, I have attempted to supply musicians and researchers with a reliable version of the surviving musical text of the six cello suites, and to convey a sense of the many possibilities Bach encouraged his musicians to explore.â€The second volume presents, for the first time, synoptically arranged facsimiles of the handwritten sources as well as the first print (with Suite No. V also including Bach’s own arrangement for lute), allowing readers to compare any specific section in all sources at one glance. This allows for a straightforward and immediate consideration of all sources, making editorial decisions transparent and self-evident.Andrew Talle’s edition is supplemented by a comprehensive discussion of the instrument for which the suites were created, as well as information regarding musical interpretation during Bach’s time.

TheKleine geistliche Konzerte(Small Sacred Concertos), published in two parts in 1636 and1639, are among the best-known and well-loved compositions of Heinrich Schutz. Both parts constitute a collection of vocal pieces in a broad range of styles written for only a few voices with basso continuo. Most of the texts are in German, but some are also in Latin. The first volume presents a broad spectrum of vocal scoring, musical forms and texts: there are solo concertos in the Italian style, traditional four-part motets, well-known Psalm texts set to music, hymns as well as mystically contemplative meditative literature. The concertos' monodic qualities and high level of virtuosity - especially in the compositions with German text - made Schutz a household name shortly after theKleine geistliche Konzertewere published in print. As the works required no large ensembles, they could be performed for different occasions and in various locations; particularly during the Thirty Years' War they could be heard at court, in cities or in villages but also in schools or at home.Unlike the 1963 edition of theKleine geistliche Konzerte(BA 3664, BA 3665, BA 3666) as part of the New Schutz Edition, this new volume presents the works for the first time in their original form and order. A historic-critical evaluation of all relevant sources yields new information regarding the composer's intentions, the printing process and the works' reception. Furthermore, the edition includes a reconstruction of an earlier version that has not been published until now. This edition is geared towards musicologists, as well as professional musicians and amateurs with a keen interest in early music.
