For a Hungarian composer, writing music set to the poems of Attila József is no small feat. In this series, György Kurtág (* 1926) took on this immense challenge in a unique way even within his own oeuvre: the loneliness of the unaccompanied, single voice line simultaneously evokes the musical world of Hungarian folk songs or even 17th-century monody. The poems - rather the fragments, the seeds of poetry abandoned by the poet - capture strong, realistic images and human situations that are characteristic of Attila József. As he is wont to do with his compositions, Kurtág transforms these poetic images into equally unforgettable musical images, drawing an atmosphere ofcontemplation, despair, boredom, happiness, and fear of death with just a few sounds. This composition was premiered on October 26, 1982 in Budapest by Adrienne Csengery, the recipient of the work s dedication. (Hungaroton HCD 31821).

An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works, which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview, it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of Hungarian Sketches. In 2015 we are launching aseries entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

Das 1908 als Nr. 5 der Zehn leichten Klavierstücke komponierte Klavierwerk Ein Abend am Lande ist ein echter Bartók-Schlager, der auch vom Komponisten selbst mit Vorliebe im Rahmen seiner Konzerte vorgetragen wurde. In einem amerikanischen Interview äußerte er sich dazu, ''… es handelt sich um eine Originalkomposition, das heißt, ihre Themen stammen von mir, wobei diese Themen jedoch den Stil der siebenbürgisch-ungarischen Volkslieder aufgreifen. Von seinen zwei Themen hat das erste Parlando-Rubato-Charakter, das zweite ist eher von einem Tanzrhythmus geprägt … und ist mehr oder weniger die Imitation eines bäuerlichen Blockflötenspiels.'' Im Jahr 1931 instrumentierte Bartókdas Stück als Nr. 1 der Bilder aus Ungarn auch für Orchester.

Bartók's Mikrokosmos has been one of the milestones in pedagogical piano repertoire for 80 years - and yet it is also far more than a classical piano primer. These 153 piano pieces, organized in ascending order of difficulty, engage not only with technical aspects of piano playing but also with the fundamentals of composition - from Imitation and Inversion, Ostinato, and Free Variations, concerning compositional technique, to mood pieces and pieces with programmatic ideas such as Notturno, Boating, From the Diary of a Fly, or the famous Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm. Mikrokosmos first appeared in 1940 in six volumes. Based on volume 40 of the Bartók CompleteEdition published in 2020(Z. 15040), the present Urtext edition offers the series gathered in three volumes. This edition includes Bartók's preface, exercises, and notes written for the first edition. Furthermore, it also features a preface and comments by the editor, which not only discuss the genesis and the compositional sources but also provide performers, teachers and pupils alike, with authentic and detailed information about Bartók's notation and the specific performing problems of Mikrokosmos.

The melodies, harmonies, moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt (1875). He wrote many collections of folk music for piano and these two tunes come from his 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, op. 17.

Norfolk is one of the most beautiful counties in England, famous for its charming villages and boundless broads, a popular centre for sailing holidays. It is also the home of one of the best known of all British composers, Sir Malcolm Arnold. The date of the premiere of this piece was to fall close to his 80th birthday, so Philip Sparke decided to write something of a birthday tribute. Some of Arnoldâ??s best-loved orchestral works are his sets of dances: there are two sets of English Dances, Four Scottish Dances, Four Cornish Dances etc., most of which have been arranged for concert band at one time or another. Philip Sparke thought it would be appropriate for the concert band tohave its own set of dances and wrote Four Norfolk Dances very much in the style of Arnoldâ??s suites.

Norfolk, berühmt für seine prächtigen Dörfer und die ausgedehnte Seenplatte, ist eine der schönsten Landschaften Englands. Und es ist die Heimat von Sir Malcolm Arnold, einem sehr bekannten britischen Komponisten. Philip Sparke wollte diesem anlässlich seines Geburtstags eine Ehre erweisen. England enjoys a rich folk song tradition. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the _x001F_first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures: the _x001F_shermanâ??s song Dance to Your Daddy, the love song O Waly, Waly and Bobby Shafto, a song from the northwest of England.
