SONATA CHO-CHO-SAN(Based on themes from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly)In the spirit of the great 19th-century opera fantasies for woodwinds, Michael Webster has created a concert trio on the many great arias from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. However, as its name implies, Sonata Cho-Cho-San is not the typical virtuosic operatic potpourri. Rather, it follows the plot, resembling a sonata mirroring Puccini's use of recurring and developing themes. Webster makes the most of the winds as versatile performers - equally suited to deliver Puccini's beautiful vocal writing, and to ornament and embroider the poignant themes in symphonic style. For advanced performers._______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:Born in 1944, Michael Webster made his New York recital debutat Town Hall in 1968 with his eminent father, Beveridge Webster, as pianist. Light, Line, Shadow is a response to Edward Hopper's iconic painting Road and Trees, a painting donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art by Daniel Dietrich II, and the first Hopper painting acquired by the museum. My piece is in three contrasting movements, each referring to and inspired by an aspect of Hopper's painting. The first movement, Landscape in Motion, refers to the dynamic movement of the landscape when traveling in a car and looking at the landscape passing by in the window. Hopper loved to take road trips, experiencing America by car, and in one of his initial sketches for Road and Trees, there was a car in the painting. The first movement tries to capture that moving landscape as experienced in a car in motion. The second movement, Brush Strokes, focuses on the darker forest in the painting, as the trees become denser and the technique of brush strokes creates deep layers. There is a spiritual aspect to Hopper's paintings, a kind of isolation and emptied out space, and the third movement, Open Road, dwells on that aspect of the painting before reprising material from the dynamic first movement.- Pierre Jalbert.

Giddy-up little donkey! Hurry, because we're late getting to Bethlehem! The image of the traveler is vividly portrayed in this Spanish children's carol, arranged to depict the clip-clop of the donkey with pizzicato eighth notes and an optional wood block. Students will focus on articulations, dynamics, and the inherent modulations between the verse and the chorus.

Travel back in time to 1775 and the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the tipping point for the American Revolutionary War. This fiery engagement is depicted with a slow, ominous introduction as soldiers gather to await the arrival of British forces. As the battle ensues, the music frantically portrays the struggle between the two sides and the percussion emulates the sound of canon bursts and rifles. An aggressive & historical tribute of significant merit!

A collection of melodic pieces for bassoon and piano inspired by trees.I had returned to my first garden after many years of travel. The trees rustling and singing greeted my ears and inspired me. I had planted them with patience and love and now in maturity each responded with their unique sound. Tall and majestic they towered over me and provided dappled shade in the balmy summer breeze. This indeed was paradise.1 Acero (Maple) A canopy of russet leaves spreading over the wall.2 Faggio (Beech) Finely veined leaves that flickered and shimmered in the sunlight3 Biancospino (Hawthorn) Planted beside the shed and quickly adopted by a family of robins.4 Salice (Willow) Simply beautiful in its exuberant abundance and graceful in its expressions.5 Frassino (Ash) A powerful and solid tree with feature bark. It stands proudly in its simplicity.6 Olmo (Elm) This tree is the character of my garden and never ceases to amaze and delight.

Take a trip through the Donut Factory! Donut Factory is a lighthearted beginning band piece inspired by the idea of a factory where donuts travel a conveyor belt and get shaped, glazed, iced and sprinkled. It features a fun bass line for the low brass in which the trombones play a glissando. Various auxiliary percussion instruments are used throughout to depict the various stages of the donut making process. Simple quarter- and eighth note rhythms and limited pitches are ideal for the young band.

â€Written by Jacques Charpentier for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Gavambodi 2 is a piece lasting 9 minutes, dedicated to Georges Gourdet. Ideal for advanced players, it features the Carnatic mode (n43) and is a great work to play for a recital. We can distinguish three parts in this piece: a slow beginning, starting with the Saxophone solo, which quickly develops into a faster chromatic section, which is much more technical. The Finale is reminiscent of the beginning, ending with two very slow measures. Widely influenced by his travel, especially India, this music is also reminiscent of the techniques used by his teachers, such as Olivier Messiaen. Jacques Charpentier (b. 1933) is a French musician who lived in India and wrote numerous pieces from Piano and Organ music, to Chamber, stage and orchestra works among others.“.

Work for solo piano. My snapshots are scribblings in pencil or ink, with a little color, and that's all -Kees van Dongen. This collection of short pieces is neither akin to sketches nor to studies, nor to preludes, nor to variations in the classical meaning of the word. They are like the rough drawings that make up a kind of travel notebook, and as such they demand a piano writing that involves widely varied musical gestures. This multiplicity of very different motifs crates sudden ruptures in the sonic atmosphere. This writing doesn't develop but rather hints at things in order to reach equilibrium between light and deep. A play on variants of the core motifs runs right through across the work. Each piece centers on a motif or a group of motifs in particular that builds the shape of a palindrome.

Sea Squall is about the journey of a ship traveling across turbulent seas. It starts with the primary melody that comes back frequently, with every section having a turn playing it. The context of this theme changes as the piece progresses. Sometimes it is calm and safe, and sometimes more powerful, like a storm with that lingering feeling of unpredictability. The bowings and dynamics, as well as what each section is playing, changes the mood and feeling of the music, from calm, to animated, even heroic in the louder areas. There is a new theme introduced later in the cellos with the upper parts following soon after. The focus of the player should be to bring out these contrasts in the parts, by observing the dynamics and articulations.Sea Squall is about the journey of a ship traveling across turbulent seas.
