ThePetite Messe solennelleis the finest work of Rossini's late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet -Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with theStabat mater, the mass is one of the composer's mostimportant sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two pianos and harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini's day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this, other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements.- Choral score based on the Urtext of the seriesWorks of Gioachino Rossini- Supplements the already existing material available to this work

This collection of important piano works by the turn-of-the-century French composer, Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) has been edited and fingered by William Scharfenberg. Affiliating herself with nationalist composers such as Saint-Saëns and Gounod, her style was very much rooted in both Romantic and French tradition, her tuneful and highly accessible works were also tremendous favorites in the United States. Volume 2 of this collection includes the following: Pierrette, Op. 41; La Lisonjera, Op. 50; La Morena, Op. 67; Les Sylvains, Op. 60; Arabesque, Op. 61; Valse-Caprice, Op. 33; Danse pastorale, Op. 37; No. 5, Arlequine, Op. 53.

The volume comprises works by classical and romantic masters for beginners. The chamber ensemble includes violin, viola, violoncello and piano, but if the viola is missing, its part can be played by a second violin from the version enclosed in the appendix. The string parts do not go beyond the first position. As opposed to the basso continuo part that children are less fond of, the piano assumes a soloistic role alternating with the strings. A certain part of the pieces can already be played after two years of serious studies. The colourful music containing dance movements and larger forms alike offers possibilities of common music making for string players andpianists.

Long before music videos were widespread entertainment, The Beatles were already dabbling with film. After A Hard Day’s Night, they went on to make their second movie, Help! in 1965. The title song, sharing the same title as the album, was originally a slow ballad. It was producer George Martin who upped the tempo, resulting in one of The Beatles’ biggest hits. André Waignein created an exciting arrangement for flexible instrumentation, making it accessible for ensembles large and small.

Mendelssohns overture drew its inspiration from two poems by Goethe which had already inspired Ludwig van Beethoven to write a choral work on them with orchestral accompaniment. The larger part of the work on this piece must have been carried out in the summer of 1828. The first public performance took place in Berlin on 1 December 1832. The revised version of the work was first performed in Leipzig on 20 April 1834. Its ranking as No. 3 of the concert overtures was laid down when the score was first printed in 1835 (Breitkopf & Hartel).(Ralf Wehner in the Study Edition of the Mendelssohn Work Catalogue).

Saul was given its first performance under Handel’s direction at the Haymarket Theatre, London, on 16 January 1739. The original libretto (dated 1738) refers to the work as “an Oratorio or Sacred Dramaâ€. This libretto was written by Charles Jennens (1700–1770), a wealthy amateur writer from Gopsall, Leicestershire. A letter of 28 July 1735 from Handel to Jennens suggests that a complete raft of the text already existed at that time.Saul occupies an extraordinarily important position in the English oratorio tradition that Handel brought to perfection, standing alongside Israel in Egypt at the end of the first creative period of such works.

Practical Harmony is an attempt to set forth in a clear and concise manner the principles of harmonic combination and progression, as exemplified in the works of the masters. The fact that many excellent books on Harmony already exist makes some detailed explanation of its aims and scope necessary. It has seemed to the author that most of the works in circulation on this important subject have either gone too far, or not far enough; that it to say, have either been elaborate theoretical treatises, quite beyond the requirements of the average student, or have been merely primers, with a more or less sketchy survey of the more important branches of the study.

This volume continues the reordering of the Society's edition of Purcell's anthems, under which all the large-scale verse anthems with strings will be found in Volumes 13 (in preparation) and 14 and 17 (already published); all the verse anthems with organ in Volumes 28 (in preparation) and 29; and the stile antico anthems and the Latin motets in Volume 32 (in preparation). All eleven pieces in the present volume were probably composed for the Chapel Royal, and all appear to belong to Purcell's later years. Four of them are explicitly dated - the earliest 1687 - in an authoritative source which was not available to previous editors of the music: a score-book in the hand of the celebrated bass singer John Gostling, whose cavernous low register Purcell exploited for its dramatic effect in some of his finest compositions for the Chapel.

In his op. 112 Beethoven sets the two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Meeresstille (Calm Sea) and Gluckliche Fahrt (Prosperous Voyage). Several sketches reveal that Beethoven had already begun to take an interest in the poems by the end of 1814. The composer conducted the premiere at a benefit concert for the Viennese Citizens' Hospital Fund in 1815. As the publication of this work was long in coming, the dedicatee Goethe received a copy of the score only in May 1822. A few months later Beethoven inquired of him: [...] how lovely would it be to know, if I appropriately united my harmonies with yours. Also enlightenment on what is to be seen as truth, would be dearly appreciated, as I love the latter above all, and never shall be said: Veritas odium parit. The old but commendable Breitkopf material has now been definitively replaced by the new edition based on the Complete Beethoven-Edition, save for the tried and true piano reduction by Carl Reinecke, which boasts more than simply historical merits. Its existence is assured by the revised and simplified form in which it appears in the new piano reduction. It will no doubt long continue being a much appreciated aid at choral rehearsals. In the piano vocal score the articulation and dynamics were adapted to the music text of the Complete Edition. The sun recently began shining from a cloudless sky on Beethoven's Meeres Stille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) after the publication of the piano reduction and choral score which signalize the completion of the performance material based on the new Beethoven Complete Edition.
