Carson Cooman is surely one of the most exciting and versatile contemporary composers in the USA. Born in New York in 1982, he has already written over 1,200 works. Many of these are compositions for organ - the instrument which Cooman, himself a concert organist, feels a particular affinity towards. A selection of these organ works is now available in this publication, including freely-composed preludes, chorale preludes, and festive and quieter pieces, meditative in style. The compositions are in an extended tonal framework and are of moderate difficulty. A superb addition to the repertoire both for concerts and worship!

This suite was inspired most notably by the saxophone quartets of Phil Woods and was written in a conscious attempt to wed certain stylistic elements of classical and jazz music. The players are not asked to improvise, but the piece does feature sections that sound spontaneous and freely created. The piece is difficult, but no more so than other quartets, like Glazunov and Desenclos, that are standard repertoire for this instrumentation. Talented high school and all college groups will find success working on this piece. Trance Dance, is a rhythmically grooving 12/8 feel that features the tenor and baritone saxophones.

Little is known about the actual composition process of Lemminkainen, and the performance and publication history is rather complex, resulting in a first complete printing of all four movements en suite through the complete edition of Jean Sibelius Works only in 2013.In summer 1894 Sibelius went to Central Europe, carrying among others a plan for an opera freely based on the Kalevala in his mind. But during this trip he reassessed his composing: I think I have found my old self again, musically speaking. I think I really am a tone painter and a poet. As a result he abandoned his opera plans, but musical parts may have found their way into the Lemminkainen pieces which he started composing during that time. Definitely the overture had, it is now known and loved as The Swan of Tuonela.Lemminkainen became popular from the beginning and has attained a fixed position in the concert repertoire. On Lemminkainen and the Maidens on the Island a critic opined: We do not hesitate to award this tone painting of Lemminkainen's erotic emotional world the first prize among all the young composer's works. Sibelius himself said about Lemminkainen in Tuonela: The cradle song at the end of the work is maternal love, which rakes the pieces of Lemminkainen together from the River Tuonela. and commented on Lemminkainen's Return: I would like to see more pride in us Finns. Why should we be ashamed? This is the underlying thought in Lemminkainen's Return. Lemminkainen is just as good as the noblest of earls. He is an aristocrat, without question an aristocrat!.

A warm and soft atmosphere pervades the piece. The tempo marking - Molto moderato, con libertà e sempre espressivo (very moderate, freely and expressively throughout) favours the effective partnering of soaring melodies of an improvised character in the solo part with the settled and unsettled rhythms and harmonic textures featured in the piano part. The style combines a classical language with the mood of jazz harmonies.

English comments: ARABESQUE: Is a subtle and smooth movement of a virtuous disposition based on fast uses of triplets. These oscillate weaving a parabolic picture within a romantic atmosphere. The music disappears gently and mysteriously. PRELUDIANDO: Is the adaptation for piano of the famous prelude of the III Partita for solo violin by J. S. Bach. Staccato and legato, vigour and softness freely run through the Prelude which is integrated through a dramatic pedal before its end. Recording: Columna Musica. For comparison, Hindemith begins the 'Suite franzosischer Tanze' with the original movements by Pierre d'Attaignant. This is meant to be a demonstration and motivation for the player of today to add on his own little improvisa-tions or ornaments according to his playing skill as it is done with village dance music but even with jazz. The instruments can be freely chosen; this arrangement (piccolo and flute, oboe, English horn, bassoon, trumpet and lute) tries to imitate a group consisting of recorders, shawm, crumhorn, dulcian etc.

Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem tancolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas' mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.

‘Toccata Festiva’ was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the ‘Toccata Festiva’: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).

In this composition Schneider uses the famous words from the liturgy for Good Friday: Darkness fell, and on the ninth hour Jesus called out with a loud voice: My God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Here he draws on the earlier form of the trope, using what was a common device in composition in medieval times, inserted into already completed works as a sort of commentary. In this sense * making use of the post-modern principle of suggesting links across the ages * TENEBRAE makes reference to the motet Tenebrae factae sunt (Schott, C 51305) by Davide Perez (1711-1782), from which some melodic fragments have been taken and freely developed. An explosively contrived stylisation is set against the self-contained world of sound in the original piece. A recording of this title is available on CD WER 62962.

Intrepideedoodah was commissioned by the wonderful SymbiosisDuo of Gail Robertson and Stacy Baker and was premiered at the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference at Indiana University. It is recorded on the SymbiosisDuo Playground CD. Trumpet and Piano (and optional Drums) are added to the Tuba and Euphonium of the group to give it more color and textures. The Euphonium part can optionally be played on Trombone. Much of the work is written like a jazz ensemble piece with themes over harmonic changes with development and written or improvised solos. 6/4 is the predominant meter. I love to write in this meter because of all the rhythmic permutations. It freely goes back and forth between 6/4/ and 12/8. But any groups of 2, 3, 4 or 6 can be used in hemiola fashion. After a rousing intro the main theme is played in the Trumpet over Piano chords with Euphonium and Tuba counter melodies. Then the Euphonium (Trombone) has an improvised solo over modal changes in the piano. A tutti interlude is followed by written Trumpet and Tuba solos. The theme (head) returns and the piece ends with a fast coda featuring short solos by all and a splashy ending. Intrepideedoodah is a high energy jazzy romp. (one movement-7 minutes). The title is another one of my silly puns.

These mini pieces, like those in book 1, are written to engage the pupil creatively in independent reading. The pieces are short in length to allow for quick reading and to be very approachable! The book itself is designed to be flexible in its use: the pieces can be played in any order: a single piece can be followed through the four levels to see how it progresses... The difficulty level progresses through the book with the range of key signatures, textures, and part-playing used becoming more demanding. You will find different suggestions on how to extend each piece. One thing to emphasise is that altough the book is foccused on reading, pupils should feel able to experiment freely and always be encouraged to listen with attention to the sounds they produce. Interpretation and expression is key!

Rosa Papier, famed opera singer and teacher, became a major advocate of composer Gustav Mahler, even successfully lobbying for his appointment to the Vienna Court Opera. Michalek presents a well-documented and indexed view of correspondence between the two (and others) at the close of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. Universal Edition says, The immediacy of this correspondence throws an incomparable light on the vibrant nature of a relationship in which professional and personal lives appear to mix freely. Zion is the third and final installment of a series of works for Wind Ensemble inspired by national parks in the western United States, collectively called Three Places in the West. As in the other two works (The Yellowstone Fires and Arches), it is my intention to convey more an impression of the feelings I've had in Zion National Park in Utah than an attempt at pictorial description. Zion is a place with unrivalled natural grandeur, being a sort of huge box canyon in which the traveler is constantly overwhelmed by towering rock walls on every side of him -- but it is also a place with a human history, having been inhabited by several tribes of native Americans before the arrival of the Mormon settlers in the mid-19th century. By the time the Mormons reached Utah, they had been driven all the way from New York State through Ohio and, with tragic losses, through Missouri. They saw Utah in general as a place nobody wanted, but they were nonetheless determined to keep it to themselves. Although Zion Canyon was never a Mormon Stronghold, the people who reached it and claimed it (and gave it its present name) had been through extreme trials. It is the religious fervor of these persecuted people that I was able to draw upon in creating Zion as a piece of music. There are two quoted hymns in the work: Zion's Walls (which Aaron Copland adapted to his own purposes in both is Old American Songs and the opera The Tender Land) and Zion's Security, which I found in the same volume in which Copland found Zion's Walls -- that inexhaustible storehouse of 19th-century hymnody called The Sacred Harp. My work opens with a three-verse setting of Zion's Security, a stern tune in F-sharp minor which is full of resolve. (The words of this hymn are resolute and strong, rallying the faithful to be firm, and describing the city of our God they hope to establish). This melody alternates with a fanfare tune, whose origins will be revealed in later music, until the second half of the piece begins: a driving rhythmic ostinato based on a 3/4-4/4 alternating meter scheme. This pauses at its height to restate Zion's Security one more time, in a rather obscure setting surrounded by freely shifting patterns in the flutes, clarinets, and percussion -- until the sun warms the ground sufficiently for the second hymn to appear. Zion's Walls is set in 7/8, unlike Copland's 9/8-6/8 meters (the original is quite strange, and doesn't really fit any constant meter), and is introduced by a warm horn solo. The two hymns vie for attention from here to the end of the piece, with the glowingly optimistic Zion's Walls finally achieving prominence. The work ends with a sense of triumph and unbreakable spirit. Zion was commissioned in 1994 by the wind ensembles of the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Oklahoma. It is dedicated to the memory of Aaron Copland.
