Reflections was composed for the Japanese Trombone Quartet Zipang. The composer was so impressed by the quality of the quartet’s ensemble playing, blend and balance that he wanted to write a piece that would exploit these factors to the full. So the work is almost ‘conversational’, with the four players assuming equal roles and separately moving the musical argument forward.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is based on the tune Suiryo-Bushi, which comes from the shamisen tradition and opens with two contrasting statements of the melody followed by several variations each in an own style based uponthe same tune, or sometimes only fragments of it. In one of the variants, the pentatonic scale is used. The final section is in the form of a scherzo, which eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune.Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is gebaseerd op het liedje Suiryo-Bushi, dat afkomstig is uit de shamisen-traditie en opent met twee contrasterende statements van de betreffende melodie, gevolgd door verschillende variatieshierop, in diverse stijlen, steeds gebaseerd op hetzelfde liedje of fragmenten eruit. Leshnoff has worked closely with violinist Charles Wetherbee (1st violinist with the Carpe Diem String Quartet) on several projects. Wetherbee was soloist for the premiere of Leshnoff's Violin Concerto No. 1 and the Double Concerto for Violin and Viola, as well as in Distant Reflections. In this brief work, solo violin, piano (with percussive chords), and string ensemble are enhanced by an off-stage string quartet. Tension builds slowly to a memorable climactic moment, before subsiding again to stillness. Distant Reflections was recorded by Wetherbee and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra (Markand Thakar, conducting) on the Naxos American Classics label.

Maxwell Davies' 'Das Rauschende der Farbe' (The Sound of Colour) is a reflection on the life and work of the German artist Paula Modersohn-Becker who died aged 31 in 1907. Maxwell Davies first got to know the artist's work whilst on a school exchange in Hamburg in 1951 and the composer has since written that Modersohn-Becker's work has influenced the way that he views the relationship between art and the landscape in which it is produced. This is a particularly significant statement for a composer whose music is often a response to the land and seascape of his adopted home in the Orkney Isles. Commissioned by the Bremer Philharmoniker and first performed by them in 2007, the 30 minute orchestral work in three movements is one of the key works by Maxwell Davies in recent years.

Reflection for flute and piano is a contemplative and moody duet between the two instruments, which are of equal importance to the piece. As the title might suggest, it was written with themes of self-reflection, introspection and contemplation in mind. The listener is presented two different sides of this internal process via two opposing themes - with contrasting modal colours - successively presented and alternating in an extended binary form. The first represents a calmer, more sombre and hopeful version of this idea, whereas the second offers a realisation of anxiety and agitation. Taking inspiration from the often diametric and contradictory nature of one's thought processes, these ideas alternate, gradually intertwining and borrowing aspects from one another, until a chaotic flurry of anxious energy brings the rising tension to a fierce conclusion. In the aftermath of this climax, a dark and twisted version of the initial tranquillity presents itself as the inevitable union of these two patterns of thought. Thankfully (for the listener!) this instability breaks apart, so that the conclusion to the abstract debate can reach a quietly confident resolution, signified by the recapitulation of the initial theme.

Reflections is a musical portrayal of the people and moments in our lives which shape and change us. Musical elements from various sources are woven into a rich tapestry of sounds and colors that show the full expressive range of the band. Perfect for contest and festivals! Reflections by Robert Langenfeld, was commissioned by a consortium (alumni/friends/family/UCM Bands/ CTS Pubs) for Dr. Russell Coleman in celebration of his 90th birthday and his service as director of bands at the University of Central Missouri (CMSU) for 32 years. Langenfeld was given guidelines for the composition which included a clarinet soli (Coleman is a clarinetist), excerpts from Dance Prelude (commissioned by Dr. Coleman and the UCM Phi Mu Alpha chapter, written by Claude T. Smith for the CMSU (UCM) Band in 1978), the UCM Alma Mater and the UCM fight song, Go Mules. This work was premiered on June 17, 2018 by the Warrensburg Community Band, under guest conductor, Dr. Anthony Pursell, at the 2018 Missouri Bandmasters Association Summer Convention at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, MO. Dr. Russell Coleman has been the conductor for the Warrensburg Community Band since 1985.

On Reflection is a companion piece to the earlier sextet The Miraculous Mandolin(2007), for a similar combination of instruments. But it is somewhat more introspective, as implied by the title, which also refers to the technical processes employed. The first section sets up a contrast between busy linear material and ‘frozen’ chordal passages, both emanating from a single source. The first part of the final section largely develops the quick character, but the piece ends with a chorale like reworking of the chords. At the centre is a slow section, which perhaps reflects the title most aptly.

The poetry of Emily Dickinson has been one of the sources of inspiration for Kai Nieminen (1953-). Piano trio Reflecting Landscapes was inspired by Dickinson's poem A bird came down a walk, a same poem that also gave name to a piece for viola and piano by Toru Takemitsu. Takemitsu being one composer that Nieminen helds in high esteem. Especially calm, meditative athmosphere at the beginning of the piano trio has much that reminds listener from Nieminen's Japanese collegue. The tolling chruch bell -like motives reminds the composer from the death of his father, that occurred at the time of the composition of the piece. Later in the piece, bird song -like motives emerge, like birds in the calm summer night somewhere in the north. The piece was commissioned by Trio la Rue and they gave the first performance at Saaksmaki Soi -festival 6th July 2011. About the Work Diamond Reflections was composed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The work progresses from a somber, militaristic intro to a jovial symphonic ending, exploring various ensemble colors along the way. The U.S. Air Force Song is suggested throughout the work by the use of an ascending (and later, descending) minor-third interval, a play on the lyrics Off We Go. The Air Force Hymn, Lord, Guard & Guide, makes a more obvious appearance, namely the trumpet solo at m. 46 and the horn soli at m. 123.  .About the WorkDiamond Reflections was composed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The sparkling verve and freshness of BLOOMING REFLECTIONS are as strikingly delightful as the imagery evoked by the work’s title. While Nishimura’s imagination leads performers and listeners through a world of metaphorical beauty, her craft gives saxophonists the special opportunity to sound as a dazzling ensemble while playing music that is happily idiomatic to perform. BLOOMING REFLECTIONS is a 7-minute work in three connected movements, perfect for any recital.

This piece was composed for the Assisi Performing Arts Festival woodwind quintet. It's made up of five movements, each reflecting a different aspect of the beautiful and mystical town of Assisi, Italy. Movement one, 'Sunrise', begins as the sun's light extends over walls and the many churches that adorn the mountainside. Movement 2 is entitled 'Tourists' and reflects the hustle and bustle of incoming visitors to the shops and chapels with imitations of car horns and the pandemonium of the crowds. The third movement is 'Monasteries'. As the orders of monks and nuns are called to Vespers, you can hear their voices from monasteries, chapels and churches throughout Assisi. A beautiful cacophony of sacred music rises above the town! The 4th movement is titled 'Rocca Maggiore' after the lookout post atop a great hill that looks out over the top of the city and across the valley. The hike up to this post is steep, but at the top you are rewarded with not only a spectacular view, but the songs of birds soaring over the town. The 5th and final movement is 'Sunset and Dinner with Family and Friends'. This movement symbolizes the end of the day as all the tourists are gone and the families and friends in Assisi sit down together for their delicious evening meals. Wine, incredible food and conversation close out the day as the sun sets behind the mountain. This piece was written as a tribute to one of the most spiritual and beautiful places in the world...Assisi, Italy.
