Written in the key of D minor, this one is true to the dramatic Argentinian dance form for which it's named. It consists of two distinct themes-the first legato, the second marcato-with strong rhythms and dynamic contrasts. Schumann's A minor concerto is considered as the ultimate romantic piano concerto. Since the Schumann anniversary year 2010, musicians will be able to base their performance on a complete Urtext edition. The state of the sources is unfortunately patchy, as the original version of the first movement, a Phantasie of 1841 that was given two trial performances, can no longer be reconstructed. On the other hand, the posthumously published score raises certain questions, since it diverges from the editions (solo part and orchestral parts) authorized by Schumann and published in 1846, after the first performance. The pianist Mitsuko Uchida contributed the fingering for the version for two pianos. Schumann's great solo concertos are thus available in their entirety from Breitkopf, in editions prepared with the expert help of major interpreters: the Cello Concerto with Heinrich Schiff and the Violin Concerto with Thomas Zehetmair. Among Vivaldi's many flute and recorder concertos, two, both for transverse flute, were known until a few years ago only in incomplete form: RV 431 and 432. Both are written in the comfortable and expressive key of E minor, are transmitted in autograph manuscripts and lack their second movement (RV 432 also lacks its third movement). The seemingly enigmatic instruction “Grave sopra il libro” replacing the second movement has given rise to the most fanciful hypotheses.The discovery in Edinburgh, in 2010, of a concerto for transverse flute in D minor entitled “Il gran Mogol” suddenly shed light on the situation: this was an earlier version of RV 431, now complete with its middle movement, a “Larghetto” that is very possibly identical with the one missing in RV 431. This “Gran Mogol”, which belonged to Robert Kerr, a Scottish nobleman and amateur flautist, was already known by name to scholars on account of its listing in an eighteenth-century catalogue as part of a set of Vivaldi concertos bearing geographical titles: more recently, there has come to light a letter written by Vivaldi three months before his death in which the composer describes this set in detail. It is very likely that RV 431 and RV 432 belonged to this groupof works, the last known collection of its kind in Vivaldi's oeuvre.Critical Edition and Reconstruction by F. M. Sardelli.

Brahms wrote 21 Hungarian Dances for piano four-hands. Each one is highly individualistic and features slow and fast sections -- in this arrangement, D major is used in the slow opening and closing sections, while the fast middle section is in B minor. As a composer, Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck and Grand Duke of Spain. All of his quartets feature a prominent first violin part and the Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the century in A-B-A form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked rondo.This lively Rondeau from Bologne's Six String Quartets, Op. 1 is a classic seven-part rondo with an ABACAB’A formula. The ‘A’ sections are set in G Major, ‘B’ in D Major, and ‘C’ in G Minor. As was typical of the Classical style, the primary melody is heard mainly in first violin, while other sections provide supporting harmonic and rhythmic roles. The essence of the string quartet scoring is retained by having the bass double the cello part. This makes more of this significant composer’s music accessible to school ensembles, resulting in a charming concert selection appropriate for concert or festival.

Die sieben Stationen in dieser Komposition sind charakteristische Zitate aus Madrigalen Don Carlo Gesualos, des Principe de Venosa (um 1560 - 1613). Aus den vertonbaren Buchstaben seines Namens (g-e-es-a-d) entsteht eine pragnante Intervallfolge, die als Leitmotiv in. variierter Gestalt haufig wiederkehrt. Das letzte Zitat ist identisch mit dem ersten; so schliesst sich die Folge der Stationen zu einem Ring. Der Text des Kernzitats lautet: Moro lasso al mio duolo (Ich sterbe, ach an meiner Qual), Die sieben Stationen gliedern als formale und inhaltliche Schwer- und Ruhepunkte den Verlauf des gesamten Stucks; der Beginn eines jeden neuen Zitats wird durch eine vorangehende Pause oder eine Klangfermate verdeutlicht. Dagegen bilden die sechs Intermezzi (die eigentlichen Meditationen) in ihrem verschiedenartigen Bewegungsablauf wirksame Kontrastflachen, die sich entweder aus den ruhigen Stationen unmerklich entwickeln (z. B.: A, B und E) oder in schroffem Gegensatz zu dem vorhergehenden oder nachfolgenden Abschnitt stehen. Eine Introduzione (Entwicklung des Leitmotivs) und eine Reduzione umrahmen das Werk. Anstelle eines Ausklangs im Pianissimo kann der Interpret eine jah auffahrende Schlusswendung im Fortissimo wahlen. Alte und neue Ausdrucksmittel sollen in dieser Meditation als These und Antithese gegenubergestellt und zur Synthese gefuhrt werden.
