The works of Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938) - highly regarded in his lifetime as concertmaster, pianist, educator, and composer - became known to the arranger through his Russian-American wife, Alina, a teacher of young violinists and pianists. She owned an old out-of-print anthology of works by both Soviet composers and other world-renowned composers entitled The Young Violinist. Inspired by these lovely melodies, Debbaut compiled and arranged a collection of music exclusively by Soviet composers entitled The Young Soviet Violinist as well as published collections of all four of Kosenko's Four Children's Pieces, arranged for violin and piano, flute and piano, viola and piano, and cello and piano. Four Children's Pieces for piano (1930) were the first works the educational pioneer Kosenko wrote with young pianists in mind based on his own personal deep knowledge of the main objectives of a teacher. Arranged here for string orchestra, this charming suite features four delightful movements: I. Scherzino, II. Melody, III. Olden Dance, and IV. March. Each contrasting theme can be performed alone or as a full performance of all four movements.

Afro-Cuban composer Joseph (José) White Lafitte studied violin and composition at the Paris Conservatory between 1855 and 1871, winning the 1856 First Grand Prize. He eventually became a French citizen in 1870, leaving Paris only for a period of time between 1877 to 1889 when he was director of the Imperial Conservatory in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. White composed mainly for his own instrument, which happened to be the famous 1737 Swansong Stradivari violin.  In addition to numerous etudes and a virtuosic violin concerto, White wrote this habanera for two violins, La Bella Cubana. In this string orchestra arrangement, the lyrical melodic solos are spread throughout the orchestra. Traditional Cuban dance rhythms in the contrasting middle theme capture the vibrant joy of the original work.

The story of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is of a rising star composer, one with a significant gift for melody and a simple lyricism, who embraced the previously unexplored song and dance forms from his father’s native west Africa and incorporated them into his own very European art music. Coleridge-Taylor began playing the violin at age five and by age fifteen wasadmitted to London’s Royal College of Music, where he studied both violin and composition and composed his first works. The simply titled Melody is taken from Three Short Pieces for Organ, a set of pieces originally published in Novello’s Album for the Organ, No. 3 (1898). While certainly typical of the late nineteenth century, many of Coleridge-Taylor's creations display inspiration by African musical elements much like spirituals inspired Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony.

As a composer, Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and are dedicated to Anne Louis Alexandre de Montmorency (1724-1812), 7th Prince of Robeck and Grand Duke of Spain. All of his quartets feature a prominent first violin part and the Opus 1 quartets all display a similarity to the Italian opera overtures from earlier in the century in A-B-A form with the ‘A’ sections being robust allegros and all ‘B’ sections marked rondo.This lively Rondeau from Bologne's Six String Quartets, Op. 1 is a classic seven-part rondo with an ABACAB’A formula. The ‘A’ sections are set in G Major, ‘B’ in D Major, and ‘C’ in G Minor. As was typical of the Classical style, the primary melody is heard mainly in first violin, while other sections provide supporting harmonic and rhythmic roles. The essence of the string quartet scoring is retained by having the bass double the cello part. This makes more of this significant composer’s music accessible to school ensembles, resulting in a charming concert selection appropriate for concert or festival.

Mozart’s love affair with the City of Prague began as a courtship by a group of patrons who were so impressed with Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro, that they paid for his trip to Prague to hear the opera's premiere in 1786. As Mozart had recently completed his Symphony No. 38, it was decided that the orchestra would perform a separate premier for this work, which led to the nickname Prague. This arrangement functions much like a concerto grosso with string soloists performing the woodwind parts, accompanied by tutti string sections and timpani, just as Mozart penned them. As such, it is a great teaching tool for Classical style playing and an opportunity to feature your top players in a brilliant piece of timeless repertoire.
