Brahms was one of the great masters of Romantic choral music: not only did he sense how to create a good sound with the human voice, but through the choirs he himself conducted he gained great experience and skill in vocal composition. Alongside large-scale choral works for large forces he also composed a capella pieces to poems by contemporary poets (Rückert and Goethe, for instance), and to the words of German folk songs. Six of these works were selected and translated into Hungarian by Dr. Károly Vargha (1914-1993), who also translated the German texts of several great composers such as Bach, Haydn, and Händel. These six works for mixed choir are published here in twobooks, edited by Lajos Bárdos.

The triumphal concert hall success of Tchaikovsky's most popular and musically most valuable concert pieces for solo instrument and orchestra was preceded by severe teething troubles. His Piano Concerto No. 1 Op. 23 of 1874/75 was slated by Tchaikovsky's mentor and potential performer at the premiere, the pianist, conductor and director of the Moscow Conservatory, Nikolai Rubinstein. So Hans von Bulow premiered it gratefully and enthusiastically (in Boston, USA, on 25 October 1875). Leopold Auer, violin virtuoso and professor at the Petersburg Conservatory, to whom Tchaikovsky wanted to dedicate his Violin Concerto Op. 35 of 1878, refused to premiere it - he regarded the solo part as unrewarding and unplayable. On 4 December 1881, Adolf Brodsky premiered the Violin Concerto in Vienna, with Hans Richter conducting, but Eduard Hanslick wrote a crushing and unpleasant review. The Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra Op. 33 were finally published by their dedicatee, the German cellist and professor at the Moscow Conservatory, Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, after he had almost completely rewritten and then premiered it on 18 December 1877 in Moscow, while Tchaikovsky, who had asked him to publish the work, was abroad. The original version, which can be found in this edition, was not published until the 1950s.

X'seven (2010/18) is the final piece of a solo cello suite consisting of seven compositions. Each of the seven pieces can be performed individually or detached with another X-composition. Different works are yet to be performed cronologically. The X-works are composed by using the same material viewed at different angles. Their structure can be seen like a film starting several times from the beginning and from the same settings always looked from a new perspective. In the first compositions of X-suite seemingly random fragments join together piece by piece as the work goes on combining one into another organically. The story, tale or plot of the music and the gestures and figures of it transform in a new context but still remain identifiable. Olli Koskelin's (born 16 April 1955) compositional output reflects a wide range of interests. The vast area covered by his style encompasses the neo-impressionism of the piano work Courbures (1989) to the post-expressionist echoes of his Music for String Quartet (1981) as well as the breakneck virtuosity of his clarinet piece Exalte (1985/1991) and the rich romantic textures of his orchestral piece ... like a planet silently breathing... (1993). He often uses the overtone series like the French spectral composers and avoids dramatic culmination. Soft harmonics, tranquil arching melodies, a leisurely rhythmical pulse and a coherence of mood are in evidence in his later works as in Uurre (1997) for chamber ensemble, Miniatures (1997) for string quartet and Circles within for 19 solo strings.

From Stage Flop to Concert FavoriteThe story of Alphonse Daudet's drama L'Arlesienne to which Georges Bizet composed several pieces in 1872 focuses on the story of love and suicide and was inspired by true events. The musical drama had flopped at its premiere, but the suite that Bizet arranged shortly afterwards from its stage music enjoys great popularity to this very day. After Bizet's death, his friend Ernest Guiraud put together four more movements of themes and motives by Bizet for a second suite establishing a musical connection to Provence und Arles especially in the outer movements, the Pastorale and the effective Fandarole. With this edition, Breitkopf & Hartel continues its successful collaboration with Eulenburg.

One can truly say that Mendelssohn's St. Paul oratorio is a genuine work in progress - such as one finds repeatedly in the composer's works. After the world premiere in Dusseldorf in 1836, the composer sighed: Since I changed a number of things after the performance, notably in the recitatives, and omitted a few pieces entirely, I really don't know how these changes can be made in the quartet parts that have already been engraved.Luckily, the score had not yet been printed at this point in time. It was published not long afterwards (1837) and served as the basis for the old Complete Edition, where, however, it was mixed together with other sources.Michael Marker's present Urtext edition uses the first edition of the score as the main source for the first time. Its inconsistencies were emended by the editor in agreement with other contemporary sources.By forgoing the version transmitted by Julius Rietz (1878), on which all later reprintings were based, in favor of the score of the first edition of 1835, which was personally supervised by the composer, a new Paulus has come to light: freed from a number of conventionalizing, adulterating retouchings, at times more angular in detail and thus more characteristic. (Michael Marker about his New Edition, 1997)Marker's Urtext edition is based on the first edition of the score from 1835.

This piece was written in the wake of the trumpet concerto 'Eirene'. Both pieces were composed by Willi for the trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich who raves about the concerto: 'There is an inexplicable magic in this magnificent light/space work which gives both the audience and the musicians great inner pleasure.'This magic, however, is created by ascetic rather than romantic and lavish means. Willi composed a series of brief musical actions, tone repetitions and short flitting snatches of melody. Wind players who are familiar with all kinds of playing techniques are given much room for their own artistic interpretation.

The first edition of a forgotten treasureThis edition contains the original solo part for horn in D as well as a version for horn in F.
ISBN 9790004186794. 9 x 12 inches.
Schumann's horn sonatas were composed in 1936/37. Considering the slim repertoire offered horn players from this period, it is more than surprising that these two masterpieces could have slumbered for so long. Both sonatas are similar in structure, with op. 118 being one Schumann's few three-movement sonatas. The first movements of the pieces sparkle with melancholically lyrical melodies, whereas passages strongly marked rhythmically, variously shape the two outer movements. Virtuoso moments can be found, respectively, in the final movements, bringing the works to a brilliant close. The horn parts predominantly range within the full, sonorous middle register, where occasional outbursts up to the notated a flat'' are also not lacking. The clever handling of the balance of sounds, the possibilities on the early valve horn as well as the inner interweaving of themes differentiating horn and piano make the sonatas an exceedingly vivid testimony to Schumann's mature compositional art.Schumann's horn sonatas are a crucial enhancement to each horn player's repertoire.

Sibelius orchestral works rediscovered It was a minor sensation when in 1996 the conductor Osmo Vanska recorded a completely unknown, more than 20-minute-long orchestral work by the young Jean Sibelius in Lahti: Skogsraet (The Forest Nymph) had suddenly re-emerged. But this was no mere rediscovery, since in his later years, Sibelius had graciously agreed that his early work could be performed in a radically abridged form. He thus left his score in a rather confusing condition. Varsang (Spring Song), the second work in this volume of the Complete Edition, has two (or even three?) early versions, which makes for a most complicated source examination. Tuija Wicklund thus faced a mountain of problems in preparing the edition. The editor's meticulous work ultimately yielded three complete orchestral scores from the years 1894/95, thus from a period in which no one can claim that such pieces are early works. By this time, Sibelius had already made a name for himself in Finland with his first masterpieces Kullervo (1892), En saga (first version, 1892), the Karelia Suite (1893) and Rakastava (1894).
