Edited by Manuela Jahrmarker. This edition: urtext. Stuttgart Urtext Edition: Schubert. German title: Messe In B Rev.2001. Sacred vocal music, Masses, Latin. Single Part, Violin 2. Composed 1815. D 324. 16 pages. Duration 30 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 40.657/12. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.4065712). ISBN 9790007085292. Key: B flat major. Language: Latin. With a total duration of about 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), written in 1815, is considerably longer than Mozart's and Haydn's classical Brevis masses, and its large instrumental ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even gives it a clearly solemn character. Overall, Schubert was inspired by the late Haydn style of the symphonic mass (e.g., the division into six large movements, the omission of arias for the vocal soloists who are instead juxtaposed with the choir, singing short passages either singly or as a group) without, of course, achieving its temporal expansion. This is a representative, musically appealing work that excels with its multi-layered, detailed text treatment. It is, therefore, suitable for special occasions and the high feasts of the church year and can be mastered well by experienced church choirs. Franz Schubert's Mass in G major is one of the most popular settings of the mass ordinary: the charming song-like melodic writing, especially in the Kyrie and the Credo, forms a magical counterpoint to more concertante passages in the Gloria and the Sanctus. For a long time it was thought that Schubert's final version was scored for purely string orchestra, whilst a version with wind, brass, and timpani was thought to be an expanded orchestration by his brother Ferdinand Schubert. However, since the mid-1990s it has been known that the parts for trumpets and timpani were additionally composed by Franz Schubert himself for use ad libitum. The present edition offers this Klosterneuburg Version - with trumpets and timpani ad libitum, but without Ferdinand's wind parts - in an Urtext edition reflecting Schubert's own intended orchestration. This is the second of six Masses composed by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), also referred to frequently as the Mass in G, and it remains the best known of the three shorter settings titled Mass. Composed in 1815, it was originally scored for choir, string orchestra, organ, and the soloists and remained one of the composer's less-noted works, not even being printed until 1845. But the Mass's later popularity also led Franz' brother Ferdinand to add winds and timpani after Franz' death. And a 1980s discovery of a set of parts that include trumpets and brass, in addition to some minor changes, suggests that Schubert intended something grander than the original scoring. The current edition may be played with the original strings and organ only or with the addition of the oboe/clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, and timpani. Apart from some passages for the soprano, this Mass has only modest solo passages, and it is written in a devotional mood. Instrumentation: 0.2(opt.subCl).0.2(opt): 0.2(opt).0.0: Timp(opt): Org: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo SATB: Mix Chor. Vocal score and choral score available separately. Violin 1 (solos: STB - choir: SATB - 0.2ob. or 2clar.2 - 0.2.0.0 - timp - org - str) SKU: BR.OB-5285-15 Revised New Edition 1995 - Urtext. Composed by Franz Schubert. Edited by Franz Beyer. Stapled. Orchester-Bibliothek (Orchestral Library). Until the late 20th century, Franz Schubert's most popular early mass was often performed with strings alone. However, a set of parts written by Schubert himself was discovered in the 1980s in Klosterneuburg. Mass; Romantic. Part. 8 pages. Duration 25'. Breitkopf and Haertel #OB 5285-15. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.OB-5285-15). ISBN 9790004332177. 10 x 12.5 inches. Up to now, Schuberts most popular early mass has often been performed with strings alone. The wind parts added to the autograph by Ferdinand Schubert at a later date were considered inauthentic. Today, over a century later, the set of parts written by Franz Schubert himself has been rediscovered in Klosterneuburg. It contains parts for trumpet and timpani which are thus clearly authorized by the composer. There is also a figured organ part, which guarantees that the continuo can now be realized without misinterpretation.

Chorus (with soloists) and orchestra (solos: STB - choir: SATB - 0.2ob. or 2clar.2 - 0.2.0.0 - timp - org - str) SKU: BR.CHB-5242-02 Revised New Edition 1995 - Urtext. Composed by Franz Schubert. Choir; stapled. Chor-Bibliothek (Choral Library). Until the late 20th century, Franz Schubert's most popular early mass was often performed with strings alone. However, a set of parts written by Schubert himself was discovered in the 1980s in Klosterneuburg. Mass; Romantic. Choral score. 20 pages. Duration 25'. Breitkopf and Haertel #ChB 5242-02. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.CHB-5242-02). ISBN 9790004411810. 7.5 x 10.5 inches.
