The Wind Serenade Op.102, was Wilhelm Berger’s last work, written 1910 shortly before he died following a long illness and an operation. It was first performed in Berlin after his death, and was very well received. He handles the different instruments with skill and imagination, creating a whole as well as a mass of delightful detail. Apart from omitting the contra-bassoon, Berger has adopted the same instrumental ensemble as did Richard Strauss for his Serenade and Suite. The music is in the fine tradition of romantic writing for wind, but Berger abandons the classical arrangement of movements and produces new and exciting changes of mood, key and colour. The manuscript is held in the Deutsche Staatsbibliothek in Berlin, who made a copy available for the preparation of the first edition of the Serenade Op. I02, first published by Phylloscopus Publications, editors F.H. Nex and C.M.M. Nex. This brand new edition, published nearly 30 years later, is also edited by F.H. Nex and C.M.M. Nex.Published as:C495 Full Score (This Book)C496 Set of 12 Parts:Two Flutes, Two Oboes, Two Bb Clarinets, Four Horns in F and Two Bassoons.Former Spartan Press Cat. No.: PP174S.

The serenade flourished in Mozart's era, but with Brahms the genre experienced a new surge in popularity in the 19th century. Dvorák's cheerful and relaxed op. 22 came into being in 1875, during a very happy time for him both professionally and privately. Heput his personal stamp on the five-movement composition by incorporating stylized Slavonic dances. The spirited finale captivates by restating themes from the previous movements. Since its premiere in 1876 the work, with its melodic richness and particular harmonic modulations, has enjoyed great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Today it is among Dvorák's most popular and most frequently performed compositions. As well as the autograph and printed editions, the composer's copy of the printed score with autograph corrections and additions has been consulted for Henle's Urtext edition.

The title of this piece is taken from the late astronomer and educator Carl Sagan's book Cosmos (1980). Sagan was a great voice in the pursuit of knowledge and reason, an invaluable force in the struggle against ignorance and superstition. His vast historical knowledge and sensitive ear for the poetic also allowed him to adorn his various texts with short quotations from original folklore through history, quotations which I have used as mental and spiritual appetizers, heading some of the movements in this piece. Serenade also reaches out to other inspirational sources, such as William Shakespeare, Joseph Conrad and British science-writer John Gribbin, another great educator and popularizer. The Darwin quotation heading the second movement was also found in Sagan's book Cosmos (it is originally from Charles Darwin: On The Origin Of Species) and so was the quotation about The Backbone of the Night. The Ku-Fu-quotation can be found in Sagan's last great work THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD (1995).

Nocturno Virtuoso Adolf Busch was not only a phenomenal violinist from the first half of the 20th century, but he also wrote musical pieces in a tremendous variety of genres for concert performances as well as home use. Busch's brother Hermann was a cellist and member of the acclaimed Busch Quartet; his first wife Frieda played the clarinet. It was to her that Busch dedicated the larger part of the four pieces gathered here under opus 53 and composed between 1927-1943 for clarinet and various string scorings. One exception is the profusely rich and charming Serenade op. 53b, which Busch dedicated to his friend Hans Ritz in Basel. The scoring and compositional techniques of the work hint at Reger, Mozart and even beyond, whereby it is undeniable that Busch is firmly rooted in the musical tradition. Moreover, virtuosity and melodic lines in the Nocturno are influenced by Busch's prolific experience as an instrumental soloist. Adolf Busch wrote 70 works with opus numbers and about as many without, which were intended for home use. Rediscovered and increasingly performed, Busch's music is now conquering the place it deserves in concert programs. The present edition is part of Breitkopf's series of chamber music by Adolf Busch.

For flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B flat), 2 bassoons, double bassoon or bass tuba, 4 horns (E flat major/B flat) with additional parts for horns in F. When he was a mere 18 years old, Richard Strauss composed the highly Romantic, one-movement Serenade for Wind Instruments, op. 7. Extremely popular among wind players to this day, this work recalls in instrumentation and structure Mozart's “Gran Partitaâ€, which certainly served as a model for Strauss. The serenade was not premiered in its Bavarian homeland as might have been expected, butrather in Dresden, in 1882, under the direction of the then much-esteemed conductor Franz Wüllner, who had also given the inaugural performances of Richard Wagner's Rheingold and Die Walküre and later premiered Strauss' tone poems Till Eulenspiegel and Don Quixote. So it was a great honour for the young Bavarian! Editor Norbert Gertsch presents this little masterwork here for the first time in Urtext quality - in full score and instrumental parts - for which not just the first edition but also the autograph manuscript was scrutinised fastidiously.

After a long recovery from an accident, composer Hodkinson was asked for piano duet music for two colleagues at Stetson University. Eager to return to composing, Hodkinson produced this serenade, Brain Drops, with each of seven movements dedicated to the doctors and therapists who saw him through his ordeal. The serenade is frequently defined as instrumental 'evening music' characterized by a mixture of elements, he says. The melange exhibited herein is certainly a scrambled mixture - perhaps akin to my own somewhat addled brain at the time. For advanced performers. Duration:c.20'.

The folk-like tune of Ruby Mountain Serenade may seem familiar but is in fact an original tune from composer John Atteberry. Beginning in D major, this graceful tone poems opens intimately, with optional soloists from each section. The Schott Student Edition presents motivational teaching repertoire in five levels, from easy to advanced. These editions feature easy-to-read printing along with tips and suggestions from highly experienced music educators. The Serenade & Valse by the relatively unknown composer Marie Dare is an attractive addition to the repertoire in the first years of study (Level 2) and can be played entirely in first position. The Gavotte op. 112 by Sebastian Lee is a multi-faceted work for intermediate students (Level 3). Musically the Gavotte offers the possibility to present different characters. The piano part is intentionally simple and is limited to a supporting accompaniment.
