Emerald Isle, in this part, the musical spotlight focuses in on the green island of Ireland and its great wealth of traditional folk music. The piece opens with the air ‘My Lodging Is on the Cold Ground’, also known under the title ‘Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms’ (bars 5-24). Next, we hear another well-known air ‘The Minstrel Boy’ (bars 29-44). Finally, the air ‘The Groves of Blarney’, possibly better known as ‘The Last Rose of Summer’ (bars 53-68) is heard. Each air is heralded by a short introduction and brought to an end by a short conclusion. 2. Old Kentucky Memories, following an introduction of 14 bars all attention is claimed by the song ‘My Old Kentucky Home’. As the piece goes on, snippets of memories emerge, fleetingly, surfacing fast, but quickly disappearing again: this is musically featured by way of small motifs and themes from other songs. These can be heard briefly, and then they disappear, musing on Old Kentucky until the introduction returns to end the piece. 3. Uppland, is a province in Sweden that had a rich folk music culture, like the whole of Sweden, that boasts many songs and dances. A notable amount of these songs and dances have been composed in minor keys, three of which feature in this part. First, we hear ‘Svensk folkvisa’(bars 1-38), followed by the famous ‘Värmlandsvisan’ (bars 39-67) and then brought to an end by ‘Vexelsang’ (bars 68-end). 4. Ratatouille, in this part, no folk songs of just one country or one province are featured. This piece is a mishmash (or ratatouille), a hotchpotch of three folk songs with no significant relation at all. In succession, we hear a song from Russia (bars 1-30), one from Japan (bars 31-58) and one from Australia (bars 59-end). The composer of the Russian song titled ‘The Nightingale’ is Alexander Alyabyev (1787 1851), but the composers of the Japanese song titled ‘Sakura’ and the Australian ‘Waltzing Matilda’ are unknown.

Ratatouille, in dit deel worden geen volksliedjes van één land of één provincie belicht. Dit werkje is een ‘ratjetoe’ (ratatouille), een allegaartje van drie folksongs die onderling geen enkel verband met elkaar hebben: de enige overeenkomst is dat ze alle drie als volksmuziek bestempeld kunnen worden. I selected the five poems from Sachs' O The Chimneys collection, retaining its grimly evocative title even though I did not include the actual poem by that name. In scoring the work for female voice, flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, cello, piano and percussion, I aimed to give myself the broadest possible palette of instrumental colors while using the smallest number of participants. Yet as I was planning the final moments of my cycle, I felt that instrumental sound alone would not suffice to express the horror. An electronic tape segment was added to the work's final climax. The first two poems (A Dead Child Speaks and Already Embraced by the Arm of Heavenly Solace), both depicting the tearing of a child away from his mother, are treated essentially as one unit, with the first acting as an introduction to the second. These two, and the cycle's apocalyptic fifth poem (Hell is Naked from Glowing Enigmas II), act as the two weighty pillar points, so to speak, surrounding the more introspective two middle poems (Fleeing and Someone Comes). To maximize dramatic differentiation within the constraints of a relentlessly tragic subject matter, I used range as a means to delineate contrast, by dividing the sounds available to me into low and dark (mvt. III) vs. high and, at times, eerily bright (mvt. IV) colors. Thus the two middle poems are intended to balance the frenzied madness of which the work's outer parts are made. Idiomatic jazz rhythms abound, with blue notes galore – the tension notes that virtually define the sound of both the blues and jazz (i.e. the flatted third, fifth, and seventh notes of a scale in place of the expected major intervals).After several groovin’ choruses of a 12-bar blues in B(, often played as if the soloist is improvising, the blues modulates to the key of E(, and as a tribute to the great Charlie Parker (AKA Bird), I harmonically suggest the more complex set of bebop changes that Parker introduced in his composition, Blues for Alice. Often referred to as Bird Changes or Bird Blues, instead of the basic I - IV – V chord progression commonly used in the blues, Parker used a series of sequential ii-V progressions (and secondary ii-V progressions). With the addition of some tritone substitutions, a chromatically descending bass line deftly replaces the original I-IV-V root movement. This is the harmonic background I was hearing as I wrote this particular chorus.After my 12-bar nod to Bird’s changes, the introductory dream theme returns, now in tempo and with a straight-ahead swing feel. Variations on this theme follow, again to be played as if improvising, with the soloist once again bringing their own personality into the performance. Anteun Hoesen plays the solo part in this piece on the CD.The concept of divine properties features heavily in various ancient religions: these are properties to which man can aspire—through striving towards divine properties one can evolve spiritually and become a better person. Different divine properties feature in various religions. Inthe Christian church, the terms Faith, Hope and Love play an important role.This composition is primarily written from an Old Testament point of view. The chosen qualities are as follows: Simplicity, Strength, Truth, Perseverance and Passion. After a short introduction of the thematic material, the various properties are depicted in musical miniatures.

Aanleiding voor het ontstaan van deze compositie was het feit dat Andels Fanfare Corps begin 2012 een cd met uitsluitend werken van Rob Goorhuis zou gaan opnemen. In de uitvoering op de betreffende cd speelt Anteun Hoesen de solopartij.In diverse vanuit in de oudheid ontstane religies is het concept ‘goddelijke eigenschappen’ een rol gaan spelen. Deze eigenschappen hebben in feite betrekking op de mens zelf. De mens zou moeten streven naar het verwerven van goddelijkeeigenschappen om een beter mens te worden. In verschillende godsdiensten worden verschillende eigenschappen nagestreefd. In het christelijk geloof spelen de begrippen geloof, hoop en liefde bijvoorbeeld een belangrijke rol.Deze compositie is geschreven vanuit meer oudtestamentische benadering. De gekozen eigenschappen zijn: eenvoud, blijdschap, vrede, kracht, waarheid, overwinning en passie. Na een korte introductie van het thematisch materiaal worden de diverse kenmerken in muzikale miniaturen verklankt.
Auf Wunsch von Danny Oosterman und nach einer Idee von Anteun Hoesen schrieb Rob Goorhuis ein herausforderndes Werk für Solo-Euphonium und Blasorchester, das den erhabenen Titel The Seven Divine Properties erhielt. Anlass für die Entstehung dieser Komposition war die Tatsache, dass das Andels Fanfare Corps Anfang des Jahres 2012 eine CD ausschließlich mit Werken von Rob Goorhuis aufnehmen sollte. Auf dieser CD spielt Anteun Hoesen die Solostimme in diesem Stück.Die Idee der göttlichen Eigenschaften“ (divine properties) spielt in diversen Religionen des Altertums eine Rolle. Diese Eigenschaften beziehen sich tatsächlich auf den Menschen selbst. Dieser sollte nach demErlangen der göttlichen Eigenschaften streben, um so ein besserer Mensch zu werden. In verschiedenen Gottesdiensten wird den unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften nachgestrebt. Im christlichen Glauben spielen dabei die Begriffe Glaube, Hoffnung und Liebe eine wichtige Rolle.Diese Komposition wurde eher von einem alttestamentarischen Standpunkt aus geschrieben. Die gewählten Eigenschaften sind folgende: Einfachheit, Kraft, Wahrheit, Überwindung und Passion. Nach einer kurzen Einführung des thematischen Materials werden die verschiedenen Eigenschaften in musikalischen Miniaturen vertont.
La notion de propriétés divines occupe une place importante dans plusieurs religions anciennes : des propriétés auxquelles l’homme peut ambitionner en aspirant aux propriétés divines on peut évoluer en spiritualité et devenir une personne meilleure. Cette composition est écrite surtout d’une perspective de l’Ancien Testament. Les qualités choisies sont la simplicité, la puissance, la vérité, la persévérance et la passion.
Rob Goorhuis wrote this challenging work for solo euphonium with its marvellous title The Seven Divine Properties at the request of Danny Oosterman and after an idea of Anteun Hoesen. In fact, this piece came about because the Andels Fanfare Corps was going to record a CD in early 2012 exclusively with pieces by Rob Goorhuis. Anteun Hoesen plays the solo part in this piece on the CD.The concept of divine properties features heavily in various ancient religions: these are properties to which man can aspire—through striving towards divine properties one can evolve spiritually and become a better person. Different divine properties feature in various religions. Inthe Christian church, the terms Faith, Hope and Love play an important role.This composition is primarily written from an Old Testament point of view. The chosen qualities are as follows: Simplicity, Strength, Truth, Perseverance and Passion. Yet this ballet abounds in novel dramaturgical effects that foreshadow his later operas, such as “Zaïsâ€, “Zoroastre†and “Les Boradesâ€. Working together with his librettist Cahusac, Rameau sought to weave the dance numbers, choruses and stage machinery more tightly into the main plot. He also experimented with stylistic devices unique to this work, the most famous being unquestionably the scene in which the Nile overflows its banks (an impressive ten-voice double chorus with solo voices and orchestra) and the sextet from “Arurisâ€, a scoring found nowhere else in his uvre.
For the first time, this scholarly-critical edition of “Les Fêtes de l'Hymen et de l'Amour†presents a reference version of the work that is based on all the major sources for both the libretto and the music, including two recent musical discoveries. As most of the performance material for the première has vanished, our edition is based on the version prepared for the Acadmie Royale de Musique in 1748.
