The theme of the cantata is the separation of lovers brought on by the enforced departure of the beloved on a sea voyage. The protagonist likens his tears to the waves surrounding the boat and his sighs to the winds that propel it, the two images giving rise to some lively word painting. Both arias are in slow tempo, but the concluding cavata lends a welcome touch of animation to the cantata.

Le Marais is a semi-programmatic composition by Christian Bouthier. It contains three movements, each of which is based on a different aspect of the Parisian district of the same name. Le Marais is said to be one of the prettiest neighbourhoods in Paris, where fashion, culture, food and architecture meet and mingle.

Home on the Range is gebaseerd op een gedicht (‘My Western Home’ uit 1872) van Brewster Higley, een arts uit Indiana die een jaar daarvoor een stukje land had gekocht in Kansas. Vervolgens schreef Dean Kelley er een melodie bij -het nieuwe lied werd al snel geliefd onder migranten in de Verenigde Staten. In de loop der jaren werd het steeds bekender, het is uitgevoerd door vele artiesten, onder wie Frank Sinatra. In 1947 werd Home on the Range hetofficiële lied van de staat Kansas. Brewster Higleys omschrijving van een helderblauwe hemel, oneindige vergezichten en een overvloedige fauna vindt met deze muziek nog altijd weerklank bij luisteraars.

Home on the Range est une ancienne mélodie country qui plonge ses racines dans l’Amérique de l’Ouest. Cette mélodie a récemment fait le tour de monde, après avoir été intégrée dans la bande originale du film d’animation La ferme se rebelle produit par les studios Disney. The first time I saw an alpenglow, I had no idea what it was. It was the late 1980s, and I was at a music camp at the base of theRocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. A few of us got up in the middle of the night so we could hike to a vantage pointat the foot of Longs Peak, to watch the sun rise without any trees obstructing our view. Even though we had a few moreminutes to go before the sun breached the horizon, when I looked up at the face of Longs Peak, it was glowing intensely with amost beautiful peach-pink color. This enchanting vision lasted only about ten minutes, after which the color faded as the sunrose. Throughout the next thirty years, whenever I returned to the Rocky Mountain National Park, I would occasionally catchthis pre-dawn light show in all its glory.An alpenglow is an optical phenomenon that is visible on high altitude mountains. It happens twice daily, right before the sunrises and right after it sets. The earth’s atmosphere scatters the sun’s light, allowing particular wavelengths of light through andblanketing the mountains in rich hues of peach, pink, red, and purple.Alpenglow opens with First Light. This movement begins in the pre-dawn hour. The music starts simply and slowly, thengrows increasingly animated as the sky lightens and the horizon shimmers with color. The movement explodes in a massiveflurry of activity when the sun crosses the horizon; this energy eventually fades as the sun rises in the sky. In Arc of the Sun,we follow the sun as it energetically leaps and surges upwards in the sky. The music moves steadily upwards as it keeps pacewith the sun’s progress, then crests as the sun reaches its zenith. As the sun bends back down towards the earth, the musicfollows suit, getting lower in range and slower as the sun nears the horizon. In Radiant Glow, the sun slips under the horizon,giving way to a most radiant alpenglow. As the alpenglow fades and twilight envelops the earth, stars shimmer in the nightsky.-S.G.

In composing the Cantata BWV 149 Bach reverted to parts of an earlier work: The opening chorus is a parody of the Jadgkantate BWV 208 (Hunting Cantata). In addition to smaller changes which were made necessary due to the text, Bach used trumpets instead of horns. For this purpose he transposed the movement from F major to C major. Musically, the form of the three arias and their instrumentation is rich in variety. The bass aria (2nd mvt.) is characterized by an active continuo accompaniment. After the secco recitative an extended dance like soprano aria with string accompaniment follows. The third aria (6th mvt.) is impressive due to the animated melody and the forming of a canon between the voices, and especially through the entry of the bassoon as the instrumental counterpart to a duet between the alto and tenor. For Une Belle Histoire, Roland Kernen took his inspiration from the seventies French singer and composer Michel Fugain and his troop of singers and dancers known as “Le Big Bazar”. The cheerful melodic line of his 1972 hit Une belle histoire lends itself perfectly for brass band. Add a little French charm to any concert with this throwback to the hippy period of the early seventies.

In 1972 werd het gezelschap Michel Fugain et le Big Bazar opgericht, een kleurrijk geheel van muzikanten, zangers en dansers met een hippieachtige uitstraling. Met deze formatie bracht Fugain tot eind jaren zeventig veel vrolijkeen mooie hits uit, waaronder Une belle histoireM. Roland Kernen schreef een fraai arrangement van deze levendige en tijdloze hit. De melodieuze muziek zal elk concert voorzien van een vleugje Franse charme.

Mit Une belle histoire (Eine schöne Geschichte) kam die französische Gruppe Michel Fugain et le Big Bazar“ - ein bunter Haufen aus Tänzern und Musikern im Hippie-Stil - in den siebziger Jahren groß heraus. Roland Kernen schrieb diese reizvolle Bearbeitung des lebhaften, zeitlosen Hits. Die melodische Musik verleiht jedem Konzert etwas vom Charme Frankreichs und der fröhlichen, schönen Hippiemusik der Siebziger.

Michel Fugain est un auteur-compositeur et interprète français, né en 1942 Grenoble. Il débute sa carrière dans l’industrie du cinéma tout en écrivant plusieurs chansons pour Michel Sardou. Son talent musical s’impose alors comme une évidence. En 1969, il enregistre son tout premier album Je n’aurai pas le temps. Trois ans plus tard, en 1972, il crée la célèbre troupe du Big Bazar, composée de musiciens, chanteurs, comédiens et danseurs aux couleurs hippies. Ensemble, ils sortent le single Une belle histoire qui connaît un immense succès. Jusqu’ la fin des années 1970, la troupe va égrener quelques tubes, avant de se séparer. Dans les années 1980, MichelFugain se diversifie et se lance dans l'animation télé. Si pour la grande majorité du public, il est resté le leader du Big Bazar, Michel Fugain a néanmoins réussit son renouveau artistique après plusieurs années d’absence.Roland Kernen a réalisé un charmant arrangement du premier grand succès du Big Bazar, Une belle histoire. La mélodie, délicieusement légère, chemine sur des notes au charme et aux parfums de France.
