About William Walton Edition
In March 2014 Oxford University Press published the last volume in its magnificent William Walton Edition, the only complete critical edition of a 20th-century British composer's oeuvre. All 24 volumes are handsomely printed and bound. Walton's entire output is now available to scholars and performers in a definitive and fully practical edition, based on the form in which the composer ultimately wished his music to be performed. The general editor, David Lloyd-Jones - the eminent conductor, English music specialist, and founder of Opera North - invited a world-class expert to edit each volume. Carefully researched introductory essays place the works in their historical context and in the composer's oeuvre, and there are full critical notes.

The latest edition of our Pieces for Solo Recorder series is a joyful volume of very diverse works for unaccompanied recorder (variously sopranino, descant, treble, tenor) with a universal dimension. There are pieces by composers from the USA and Taiwan, music influenced by the rhythms of Africa and by the heavens, as well as the humorous portrayal (with optional narrator) of the antics of a pet dog. In addition there is a plethora of dance and birdsong. The works vary in difficulty from moderate to challenging but are entertaining and fun to play!

The song repertoire has its origins in the late nineteenth century when every household had a piano and for much of the twentieth century, singers and their pianist collaborators were able to create recital programmes from a deep reservoir of European and North American song. The recital genre became more sophisticated as the century progressed and metamorphosed from a miscellaneous collection of lollipops to something altogether more sophisticated, often featuring elaborate themes which would enable the music to be presented in a variety of new contexts. In the twenty first century opportunities for recitalists are fewer and programmes still tend to focus on the much-loved butwell-explored repertoire. We hope this collection will contribute to a broadening of possibilities for recitalists or anyone who just wants something new to sing. There are several songs for voice and piano but some require other instruments. There is a wide range of styles. We have resisted the temptation to grade them by difficulty, as our criteria were more broadly performative and musical rather than didactic. All selected composers have a particular sympathy for the singing voice, so there is nothing that cannot be sung by a competent performer. The songs generally have a designated voice type, but this shouldn't be thought of as prescriptive; they are designed to be flexible and to offer the maximum opportunity for creative interpretation. They range from the curious and quirky to the virtuosic and challenging, the intense and mysterious to the sad and the light-hearted. We hope that many performers will find their tastes represented here. Compiled by David Blake and John Potter. Edited by Michael Hooper.

A genre-defying collection of songs for female vocal trio, Songspin Songbook is a collaboration between Juice Vocal Ensemble and UYMP, funded by an Arts Council England grant. Described as “the 21st century’s answer to the Swingles or King’s Singers” (The Times), Juice have emerged as the face of a revitalised experimental scene for vocal music. Songspin Songbook publishes songs from their debut album, Songspin. The album was released on Nonclassical in 2011 to critical acclaim, winning an international Independent Music Award for Best Contemporary Classical Album in 2012. Featuring remixes by the likes of Camille producer MaJiker and Björkcollaborator Mikhail Karikis, the album was reviewed by The Observer as “eighteen immaculately achieved tracks, spanning Elisabeth Lutyens to Gabriel Prokofiev via folk song and avant garde, enchant and enthrall”. Songspin also featured the premiere recording of Elisabeth Lutyens' Of The Snow, which The Telegraph described of a performance by Juice as an amazing sustained piece of virtuosity. Songspin Songbook was edited by James Whittle and Paul Sild. Artwork designed by Christopher Leedham and Martin Scheuregger.

This new collection is bookended by beguiling and moderately easy works by two of Britain’s most distinguished composers of light music, Peter Hope and Jim Parker, whose music has been heard by millions of listeners and viewers. Sandwiched between these are several no less attractive concert pieces, including an evocation of the night sky in East Anglia, a gentle meditative view from a college window, and some finger-testing sparklers to entertain and test the virtuoso player’s technique.

Vernon Park, Stockport’s oldest park, was created on land donated by Lord Vernon (George John Warren). It was built by poor mill workers who called it pinch-belly park and opened on 20th September 1858. Comprising twenty-one acres, it houses a museum, a bandstand, ornamental fountains, a fernery, rockery, borders and sunken rose garden as well terraced walkways that overlook the river and weir. The piece depicts a solitary walker engrossed in his own thoughts on a winter’s day, the landscape, and the park’s Victorian past.At the very end of the piece a reminder of the park’s Victorian origins can be detected in a quote from Elgar’s Salut d’amour of 1899, which may well have been played by a band in the bandstand. Stockport market celebrated its 750th anniversary in 2010. It dated back to September 1260 when a Royal Charter allowed Robert de Stokeport, the Mayor, to hold a weekly market within the defensive walls of the Norman Castle on the present site of Castle Yard. The Glass Umbrella was a popular name given to the 1861 covered market built of timber, glass and iron - nine bays with open sides and a glass canopy. In 1912, one bay was removed to enable electric trams and trolley buses to turn a sharp corner. The piece depicts a lively market day, the multiculturalism of the present day and the old cries of pick and pay without delay. The bells of St Mary’s Church are depicted by a cascading peel tuned to the ten bells of the church tower, and a fleeting reference to John Wainwright’s famous Christmas hymn Christians Awake, and the Westminster chimes striking the hour from St Mary’s, bring to piece to a conclusion. Separate parts are provided for recorder and oboe.
