A ricercar is an instrumental work that was popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Jeremy Kempton's stirring Ricercar for Sonorous Instruments harkens back to the Venetian splendor of the Gabrielis who epitomized the Glory of Venice at its height. This 3 minute work is in A-B-A form beginning with a fanfare-like Allegro that gives way to a contrasting lyrical section which seems to almost melt away. The piece then returns to the opening Allegro and a hall-ringing conclusion. This work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Jazz Sonorities (2002) was composed for Esther Lamneck at her request and premiered by her and Barbara Allen on drums at the Loewe Theater of New York University on May 30, 2002. Ms. Lamneck asked me to compose a piece for either solo clarinet or clarinet and piano. I decided on the former to continue my Sonorities series of works for solo instruments which eventually resulted in Sonorities VII for solo b-flat clarinet (2003-04). However, shortly after getting started with my Sonorities VII I kept hearing the swinging sounds of a jazz clarinet backed up by a jazz drum set. Part of the reason I kept hearing these sounds is that I grew up listening to the big swing bands of such clarinet leaders as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, and Jimmy Dorsey. These musicians were my first exposure to the clarinet. So I decided to first compose a piece for clarinet with a jazz quality and a swinging partly ad lib part for the drums and to put my solo clarinet piece for Esther on hold for a year. There was also a personal reason to use the drums in the piece. My first ambition in music was to be a jazz drummer and indeed I studied drums with a jazz drummer and played drums professionally in dance bands for several years. Ms. Lamneck's part in this piece is almost entiirely written out except for a few measures of improvisation around the middle of the piece. The jazz quality of her part comes mostly in the prasing and using bluesy like pitch bends, slides, and microtones. The jazz quality of the drum set part is in the swinging beat that is used throughout most of the piece. The influence of the famous recording of Sing Sing Sing, with a swing by Benny Goodman & his orchestra in 1937 featuring Gene Krupa on drums is heard in the middle section when the drummer switches to a beat on the floor tom and high tom for several measures. Also, the Afro Cuban section toward the end of the piece was influenced by the many recordings of Stan Kenton & his orchestra particularly the 1950 Pete Rugolo arrangement of Cole Porter's Love for Sale. In the drum solo of the Afro Cuban section which is near the end can use optional claves and/or maracas (1-2 additional players). At the premiere the composer joined in this section on maracas. The drum set calls for a bass drum, floor tom, snare drum, high tom, ride cymbal, sizzle cymbal, and hi-hat. --Patrick Hardish.

This little suite is particularly suitable as a first introduction to contemporary music. The outer movements seem to pursue a melismatic dialogue, the middle pieces cover a variety of moods.

This overture is yet more proof of Philip Sparke's ability to contribute serious band literature which also has definite audience appeal. A fanfare opening followed by the sonorous full band leads to a lively tuneful allegro. This is developed - with the occasional change of meter to refresh the ear - before the fanfare returns, cleverly counterpointed against the music from the quicker section.A fanfare opening followed by the sonorous full band leads to a lively tuneful allegro. This intriguing 11-minute work builds on alternations between declamatory unmetered phrases (beginning as “sonorous, rubato, with great aplomb and resonanceâ€) and strictly motoric rhythmic sections, developing in waves of increasing drama and intensity. Commissioned by the Naumburg Foundation for pianist Xiaohui Yang’s Carnegie Hall premiere.Ballade is a one-movement work of approximately 11 minutes, divided into three main parts that are played without significant break.Ballade alternates sections where the performer is invited to apply great interpretive freedom, especially on the temporal plane, with contrasting sections that are quite precise and rhythmic. Although carefully notated, the “freer†sections (often marked rubato) certainly allude at times to the kind of repertoire that is familiar to most concert pianists, doing so not by way of quotation but by the type of expressivity, affect, and even passagework. Thus, the performer should think of the score as a “blueprint,†where the many descriptive words I have inserted throughout the score (ranging from sonorous, rubato, with great aplomb and resonance as the work begins, to with greater motion, in a series of ever-expanding “waves†later on) are intended to act as triggers for one’s sense of imagination and fantasy to take off and bring the music alive! An inscription in the score urges the pianist to play fearlessly and exuberantly, but also tenderly!

MARS HILL FANTASIA was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to Mars Hill College (now Mars Hill University), as part of the festivities celebrating their Sesquicentennial in 2006. The work was commissioned by their Low Brass instructor, and my friend, Dr. James Sparrow. The university is located right in the heart of the beautiful mountain area of Western North Carolina, and I wrote a work which both celebrates the long and distinguished history of Mars Hill University and its lovely mountain setting. The work is scored for two combined ensembles -- an 8-part low brass ensemble of trombones, euphoniums, and tubas, and an 8-part percussion ensemble of both mallet and non-pitched percussion instruments. The music contains rich, sonorous, and joyful gestures, with stentorian fanfares, resonant chords, and lyrical melodies. It was given a truly exciting and festive premiere in October 2006 by the combined low brass and percussion ensembles of the music department of Mars Hill.MARS HILL FANTASIA was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to Mars Hill College (now Mars Hill University), as part of the festivities celebrating their Sesquicentennial in 2006.The work was commissioned by their Low Brass instructor, and my friend, Dr. James Sparrow. The Small concerto for solo oboe and chamber orchestra was commissioned by The Royal Library of Copenhagen for the inauguration of a concert hall located at the new library annex, the so-called Black Diamond, September 1999. The work as such focuses more on the contemplative and sonorously introvert, rather than more virtuosity; it is in four movements, what could be called four little tone-poems on (and inspired by) the names of the four moon craters known as: Lake of Dream - Ocean of Storms - Sea of Tranquillity - Lake of Death, four enigmatic and deeply fascinating ancient conceptions of the landscape on this our closest, but at the same time most legendary and myth-shrouded celestial body. The work was composed in 1998 for Athelas-Sinfonietta Copenhagen and Swedish obo virtuoso Helen Jahren. The work was dedicated to Helen Jahren.

Having travelled to Tucson, Arizona for the premiere of another of her works, Richter was captivated by the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. When commissioned by the Drucker Trio (Stanley and Naomi Drucker, clarinettists, and Blanche Abram, pianist), it was this scene that she wanted to capture musically. According to Richter, The rich but disembodied timbre of the clarinets (in this case, both in A), especially when combined with the sonorousness of the piano, seemed to be the ideal combination of instruments for such a piece..

E texts of the French author Anne-Marie Albiach have long been the point of departure for my works. Following the viola concerto << monstrueuse vecut dans le cadre >> la memoire, which is based on her << H II>> lineaires, the three texts entitled << une geometrie >> have generated a new cycle. As in the other two works of the cycle, << figurations de memoire >> is predicated on two different readings of the text: on the one hand a (private) reading by Anne-Marie Albiach in which time is measured [demarcated] out; while on the other hand the graphic text is measured millimeter by millimeter. The latter serves as the basis - the genetic code - for the temporal, horizontal structure of the quintet, whereas the reading of the author appears in rhythmic surfaces which interrupt the horizontal plane. In << figurations de memoire >> two clearly recognizable elements are repeated: the tone b (which plays a central roll in most of my works) and a chord of fifths built around the tone b - a piece of memory (memoire) from viola concerto. In contrast, the extended chords of the reading consist of five tones which in their frequencies are equidistant from each other (like an overtone chord). For the generation of tone materials the chords of both levels are compressed and stretched within the ranges (frames) of tones from which the horizontal positions of the text fragments are derived: lower, borderline tones on the left margin, and higher borderline tones on the right margin. Thus the disposition on the page, essential for Anne-Marie Albiach (and first introduced in poetry by Mallarme in Un coup de des jamais n'abolire le hasard), is rendered in sound. Naturally each element of the text serves to mold structure and dynamic, to include typography: fragments within quotation marks, in italics, etc., yield different sonorous images [sonorities] and movements. Each word from the typographical reading is orchestrated [instrumentated] differently, which is important for the whole cycle (however, the chords of the spoken reading are always played by five instruments; here only speech and pauses in speech [[interruptions of speech]are distinguished from each other). Thus a tight network of instrumental combinations is created in which, word for word, the text is made audible. The most important element in the process: the vertical, synchronized playing together of the individual instruments (Synchorniestudie), ranging from solo to quintet.

Velocity is an exciting mixed-meter piece from the pen of Larry Neeck. Striking sonorities and driving rhythms characterize this fast-paced romp. Splashes of percussion color and alternating sonorous and jagged melodies and harmonies in the winds sustain interest and intensity throughout the work. With a driving intensity from start to finish, Velocity is the perfect opener, closer, or change-of-pace for your next concert.
