He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi.

At the time Gervais composed his Grand Motet Miserere he held a post as director of the Chappell Royale in the Court of Louis XIV. This was one of the most important positions in music in France at that time. In addition to operas, he was highly regarded for compositions in this representative genre of sacred music until the end of the Ancien Regime. The setting of Psalm 50 consists of a succession of individual movements (choruses, soli, and duets through quartets), which, thanks to his experience with works for the stage, the composer was able shape dramatically not only with respect to the texts of individual movements, but also with a view to the large chorus which concludes the work. The beginning of Cantata no. 49 (I go and search for thee with yearning) may also be the most well-known part of this work: in the introductory sinfonia for organ and orchestra Bach refers back to the final movement of a lost concerto with concertante melody instrument which he later reworked into the Harpsichord Concerto in E major BWV 1053. The cantata, conceived as a composition in dialogue between the faithful soul (soprano) and Jesus (bass), is characterized by the expressiveness of the love poetry from the biblical Song of Songs, which finds its lyrical expression especially in the virtuosity and charm of its instrumentation - a masterpiece in the Bachian art of characterization. (Alfred Durr). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104900.

The Vienna Musicians' Society, a pension fund for the widows and orphans of professional musicians, asked Mozart, among others, to compose a choral work for performance at their benefit concert series. Presumably it was due not just to the pressure of a deadline, but also for the chance to have the music of the torso of the great C minor Mass, K. 427, performed in Vienna that he chose to arrange this composition for the Society as the cantata Davide penitente (The Mass was originally written for a performance in Salzburg in 1783). Thus, Mozart set the Kyrie and Gloria with a sacred text in Italian in the style of penitential prayers. The text was suited for Lent, which occurred at the time of the benefit concert. He also added one newly-composed aria for tenor and one aria for soprano. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5146900.

The Magnificat shows the typical personal style of the composer Gunther Martin Gottsche, who was inspired by the colorful harmonics of French Impressionism as well as by elements of jazz music. He has given equal consideration to both the vocal line and the ease of execution as well as an understanding for the musical events and a comprehensible interpretation of the text. The work, which was revised at the beginning of 2016, is based on an earlier work commissioned for the Dresden Kreuzkirche. A version with organ accompaniment (instead of orchestra) is also available. Score available separately - see item CA.2721000.

Christoph Willibald Gluck’s most popular opera “Orphe et Euridice†was performed in 1774 in Paris to sensational success. This new adaption followed the original Viennese version with Italian text that was first performed in 1762 under the direction of the composer in the Burgtheater. For the Paris version Gluck changed the leading part Orpheus from an alto to a tenor role and composed new recitatives. Both versions of Gluck’s reform drama are based on a libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi and revolutionised metastasian opera of the 18th century. Solo and choral music, instrumental music, pantomime and dance are all closely connected; the myth replaces a historical plot surrounded by intrigue; where there would have been a da-capo aria there are now simple song forms and coloratura is largely abandoned. These meticulously revised vocal scores of both versions are also newly set.

Ferdinand Schubert liked the Salve Regina in F (1815) so much that he asked his brother Franz to compose wind parts for it. The piece was published in 1825 in Vienna by Diabelli with winds instruments under the title Zweytes Offertorium and in 1888 it was included in this version in the old Schubert edition as well as in all other editions published since then. The new Carus includes both versions and it is printed so they may be compared. This offers smaller ensembles an alternative to perform the work without winds and this version also has the added charm of being the original. Score and part available separately - see item CA.7005600.

Originally conceived for the ensemble Enchanted Voices, these carols for SSA voices and organ (or piano) represent the composer’s desire for the tunes and texts to be heard in a new and fresh way. Largely contemplative, sometimes set against a gently-undulating foundation, these work well for concert and church use. Sometimes ethereal, sometimes other-worldly, the pieces succeed in bringing together the ancient purity of the medieval past and the here and now. Duration 6:52.
