Vulcan's Anvil is intended for band students who have completed at least one year of instruction. In order to capture properly the character of the music, students should not confuse a Star Trek character with the title character of this piece. Explain to them that Vulcan is the ancient mythological god of fire who is often portrayed holding a hammer over an anvil at a blacksmith's hearth. Of primary importance to an effective performance is the acquisition of an instrument which produces a convincing anvil sound. If possible, consult with an orchestral percussionist who, more than likely, has used the anvil in Verdi's Anvil Chorus or in Wagner's Ring Cycle. Web searches will reveal in-depth information about anvils in music and the lore of the character Vulcan. Regarding wind instruments, articulation is always marcato. There are no tender or contrasting passages in this piece. Effective execution of crescendos will add drama to the music. As always, balance between winds and percussion is crucial. PROGRAM NOTES Heartbreak Trail describes the forced relocation of approximately 100,000 Native Americans in the 1830s. Known as the Trail of Tears, thousands lost their lives during the march, and it is remembered today as a great human-rights atrocity and a shameful period in American history. The opening A-section captures the sadness of those in the five tribes who were forced from their homeland. The fast B-section represents the determination to survive the long, difficult trek. Although there were many obstacles, thousands did survive, but a dark A-section returns to depict the loss of homeland, fellow tribe members, and a depression over the new lack of freedom. PERFORMANCE NOTES The opening should be at a moderate pace and section entrances should be balanced at mezzo piano. In m. 12 have the woodwinds play out their melodic material. In m. 20 the brass should pick up the same volume level as did the woodwinds previously. Measure 27 should die away from what was, and then a sudden change in volume, and mood at m. 31. The entire B-section should be bold, with attention paid to the many accents. (Before working the B-section, an explanation of the difference in accents will probably aid in accuracy.) Measures 37 and 41 have the timpanist and tom-tom player play a very strong forte with attention to the accents. Measures 51 to 52 work a strong quick crescendo to fortissimo. This should set up the tutti forte at m. 53. In m. 61 start a gradual diminuendo to the return of the A-section at m. 68. Explain how to execute the staggered breathing for the flutes, tenor sax and trombone starting at m. 73. Although the final percussion from m. 73 to the end is soft and fading, make sure the final sleigh bell sounds are heard clearly.

Philip Sparke's The Saga Of Haakon The Good for Brass Band. Score and parts.

The Saga of Haakon the Good werd geschreven in opdracht van Frei Hornmusikk uit Noorwegen, ter gelegenheid van het samengaan van de twee Kommuner (gemeenten) Frei en Kristiansund op 1 januari 2008. Deze brassband gebruikte het werk bij het Noorse Nationale Brassbandkampioenschap in februari. De compositie is gebaseerd op belangrijke gebeurtenissen in het leven van Haakon de Goede (ca. 920-961), die koning Haakon 1 van Noorwegen werd - THE FUTURE KING. Hij werd opgevoed door koning Adelstein (Athelstan van Engeland) als onderdeel van een vredesovereenkomst die zijn vader had gesloten. De Engelse koning bracht hem de christelijke godsdienst bij. Toen het nieuws kwam dat zijnvader was overleden, kreeg Haakon een aantal schepen met bemanning mee om ten strijde te trekken tegen zijn halfbroer Erik Bloedbijl, die tot koning was uitgeroepen. In Noorwegen aangekomen trok hij noordwaarts - THE JOURNEY TO TRONDHEIM -, waar hij de steun van landeigenaren wist te verkrijgen door ze te beloven dat hij de belastingen die zijn vader hief, zou afschaffen.De zoons van Erik zochten steun bij de Denen, maar ze werden verslagen door Haakon, die slaagde in alles wat hij deed, behalve in zijn pogingen het christendom in het land te introduceren - THE MISSIONARY KING. Hij voelde zich niet opgewassen tegen het verzet dat hij hierin ondervond. Een van zijn beroemdste overwinningen was de slag bij Rastarkalv (dicht bij Frei) - THE BATTLE OF RASTARKALV - in 955. Door tien vaandels ver van elkaar te plaatsen langs een lage bergkam (om de indruk te wekken dat zijn leger groter was dan in werkelijkheid) lukte het hem om Eriks zoons het idee te geven dat zij in de minderheid waren. De Denen vluchtten en het leger van Haakon zegevierde. De genoemde tien vaandels worden weergegeven door tien luide akkoorden vanaf maat 420.
