The work was commissioned by the Schwetzingen Mozart Festival at the suggestion of clarinetist Nikolaus Friedrich who wished to enrich the rather meagre repertoire for basset clarinet. This edition contains the part of this instrument, much appreciated by Mozart, arranged for modern B-flat clarinet. As the title suggests, audible tonal and motivic analogies have a formative effect in this cycle, the parts of which the composer regards as five “sound poems, interconnected in some ways,†and which also refers motivically to other works by Höller. At the centre is a slow and expressive movement in the character of a lament, which is linked by the seven-tone motto A-B flat-E flat-C-B-E-D (German: a-b-es-c-h-e-d (= “Abschiedâ€, meaning “farewellâ€)) to the surrounding lively movements, some of which seem deliberately improvisatory. The strings, although accompanying, are hardly less virtuoso than the solo wind instrument, especially in the rapid finale.

Erich Schmid (1907 - 2000) was an orchestra conductor, choir director and university lecturer who promoted world premieres and radiobroadcasts of contemporary music in Switzerland. He himself studied with Bernhard Sekles, among others, then with Arnold Schönberg and followed the aesthetics of the New Viennese School in his compositions. The historical-critical Erich Schmid Edition publishes for the first time all sixteen opus-numbered works as well as three additional piano works. The playfully inventive cycle for voice, piano and string quartet, dedicated to his “dear wife†Martha, brings together short compositions written in 1937-40. “These are,†says Schmid, “12 small pieces in a wide variety of instrumentation and different forms - some of them twelve-tone pieces, some of them in a technique that comes close. An attempt to write music that is technically easier to perform.†The arch-like overall form combines folksong-like vocal numbers on text from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn†with solo pieces, quartet movements and counterpoint art on the name of “BACH†and expresses Schmid's view of music in a subtly personal way.

A wonderful work from the rich repertoire for string quartet with solo clarinet, Divertimento is full of folk, jazz and neoclassical influences. The piece was sketched on a train journey in 1926 and inspiration from this can be heard in the outer movements. It was later rescored for clarinet and string orchestra, forming Seiber's Concertino.

Verdiana is a musical tribute to Giuseppe Verdi. It takes some of his most famous melodies and reimagines them in styles of Samba, Bossa Nova and Tango to produce a virtuosic showpiece for clarinet and orchestra. The work is structured in three movements. The titles of the movements do not only indicate from which operas the main melodies were taken, they also function as a hint to the styles in which the movements are written. The first movement, titled Il Sambatore, is a Samba based primarily on the melodic material from Verdi's Il Trovatore. The second one, Un Bossa in Maschera, is a slow Bossa Nova and consists of an aria from Un Ballo in Maschera. The third and the most virtuosic movement is called Don Tangoletto and derives most of its material from Don Carlos and Rigoletto. The piece exists in 4 versions: Solo clarinet with either full orchestra, string orchestra, string quartet or piano. This publication also includes an alto sax part that can be used instead of a clarinet. An Hommage to Giuseppe Verdi.

This German dance is the 4th of 6 movements in Beethoven's final quartet, composed the year before his death. As with most string quartet music there is lots of interest in parts as they weave back and forth with imitative motives. The dynamics are exquisite and make a great teaching point as well as the 3 beat slurs which occur in all parts. Duration 3:00.

English comments: Divertimento I and Divertimento II, for two violins were composed in 1996. These two sister compositions have the additional attraction of being unedited works which are representative of the composer's most recent style. This etymological description, which defines a personality rather than an established musical style, takes the form of a succession of contrasting dynamic movements. One of the most outstanding features is the way in which the two instruments break away from their usual range of sounds to create the ideal conditions for suggesting their latent extent of sound possibilities in compositions that could be extended perfectly well into a string quartet. The interplay between the two instruments opens up a whole range of possibilities: short motives in an imitative style often braking out into a repetition of brief themes with a lot of personality, sequences of transformations, repetitive rhythms, etc. All theses show the virtuosity of the players on their own and together and because of their characteristics, they are written in a very clear tonal language, a times, modal, oriental, or even pentatonic. The progression of the movements is governed by a desire for variety: between the fast opening and closing movements there is a sequence of relaxed andante -some of which are in an easy two-part canon style- in scherzzi -and these are the lightest, most airy fragments of the two Divertimenti. Recordings: Ilia Ioff and Ilia Teplyakov (violins), Columna Musica (1CM0156). Grabaciones: Ilia Ioff y Ilia Teplyakov (violines), Columna Musica (1CM0156). --Lluis Millet.

At the age of 14, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy wrote the string quartet this arrangement is based on. Youthful carefreeness and early artistic maturity combine into a varied musical experience. From the buoyant allegro of the first movement to the complex double fugue of the finale---this piece is a real pleasure to both performers and audience alike. Arranged for saxophone quartet (SATB).

The OCTUOR in C, Op. 7, completed in 1900, took Romanian composer Georges Enesco (George Enescu; 1881-1955) one and a half years to write. It carves a different path from the celebrated octet by Mendelssohn in that, instead of favoring the 1st violin, the composer divides the melodic fabric equally between his musicians. The combined forces of the Geloso and Chailley Quartets gave the first performance on December 18, 1909 at the Salle des Agriculteurs in Paris. Speaking of its composition, Enescu declared that he fell into exhaustion from trying to keep the four movements from bursting apart due to their considerable length. Instrumentation: 4 Violins, 2 Violas, 2 Cellos (set as scored).

In 1901, Flor Alpaerts finished his music studies at the Flemish School of Music of Antwerp, which later became the Royal Flemish Conservatory. He studied harmony and composition with Jan Blockx. In 1903 he became professor at this institute and from 1934 until 1941 its director. For one season (1922-1923) he was also director of the Royal Flemish Opera House of Antwerp together with the bass Arthur Steurbaut. His fame, as a composer and a conductor, came shortly after World War I, when he succeeded Eduard Keurvels in 1919 as conductor of the concerts organized by the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp and as artistic director of the Peter Benoit Fonds. He also conducted the choral group Arti Vocali. As a composer, Flor Alpaerts was the leading figure in the Flemish impressionistic movement, utilizing an impressionism that came closer to Richard Strauss and Ottorino Respighi than to Claude Debussy. A highlight in this direction was the symphonic poem Pallieter (1921-1924). With his suite James Ensor, inspired by four works of the Ostend painter, he created an expressionistic work. In his later compositions he turned to neo-classicism. Though mostly known for writing larger scale works during his life, this Concertstuk for oboe and piano, composed towards the end of his life came at a time when he unexpectedly because to compose chamber music. In addition to this work for oboe, he composed a solo piece for clarinet, as well as four string quartets during his final years.

Scherzo from Op. 4 is a charming presto for string orchestra. It is based on the third movement of Sibelius's String Quartet B-flat major, on which the composer added a double bass part. The premiere of the string orchestra version took place on 17 February 1894 in Turku, composer conducting. Reviews were enthusiastic: Sibelius's music appeared in its most beautiful splendor and instrumental brilliance in the Presto movement, where the singing motive was carried out with charm and beauty - -, cascades of diligently and brilliantly composed scherzo-figures and melodies [give a] thoroughly delightful and frisky, lively character..

Per Norgard THREE MINIATURES for string quartet (string quartet no. 3)The Three Miniatures for string quartet (composed 1959) has a consequent experimental structure that dictates every note in the three extremely short movements. Each member of the quartet thus plays his own little melody a certain (but different) number of times so that the brand new soundscopes constantly appear in spite of the unchanging parts, due to their different length. Second SymphonyŸis in four movements. The first movement opens with a scream. The subsequent parts of the movement form a unified but complex whole, where traces from the coming movements turn up - constantly in interaction with the scream and its echoes. The second movement is slow and rather melodious. It was actually performed in a “trailer version†- shortened and minimized in December 2018 in the Danish TV programme 'Deadline'. The third movement is a scherzo - teeming, rhythmic, with almost physical soft and violent meetings, like acts of love between the different layers of music. The last movement is a farewell song - a goodbye. A musical ship is approaching only to disappear again. Where the composer perceives the preceding movements as highly contemporary, there is a touch of the past in this last movement - the composer's past. Sorensen quotes his fourth string quartet 'Schreie und Melancholie', and in this movement he was also influenced by the fact that his mother passed away during the composition of this piece.
