What does the life of a lone warrior look like? What stories does he or she have to tell? This piece for beginning band depicts a lone warrior beginning a journey across an ancient land. This solitary warrior is joined by others on the way, and together they defend those who cannot defend themselves. Each warrior might have a different story and experience, and I would encourage young musicians to create their own through sharing verbally, writing a short story, or even creating a work of art (a picture depicting their warrior or creating a mask their warrior wears might aid in the telling of their warrior’s story). The Warrior’s Path is about one minute and twenty seconds in length, and the technical range (first six notes of the Bb concert scale) should be very comfortable for a student in their second semester of instrumental music instruction. There are some articulations indicated, but overall musicians should strive for a unified even articulation. Throughout the work, the snares should be turned off or directors can choose to substitute with a low concert tom. The piece can be performed with as few as five winds (e.g. Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone) and just four percussion (suggested Bells, Snare, Cymbal and Tambourine). The piece began as a flexible chamber piece during the summer of 2020 but has been reorchestrated for use by a full band in a traditional setting. It is my hope the piece provides a meaningful opportunity for students to tell a story through music and other creative outlets. The piece is dedicated to elementary band directors who have fought for their students and their programs each and every day. In their own way, they have been warriors of a different kind using a baton as their sword and their passion for music education and their students as a shield. Thank you in advance for your support of this music, and I wish you and your ensemble well as you take The Warrior’s Path.

This six-minute madrigal setting was commissioned by the renowned Hanover Girls' Choir and composed on the basis of one of Rainer Maria Rilke's profound poems. It begins as a thanksgiving prayer: for the summer, for the autumn fruits. But the first winds bring along the fear of the cold and loneliness of winter: 'Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time, will stay up, read, write long letters...'. Eotvos lets the poem unfold twice, each time in a different way, thus intensifying the reflection. The tonality is treated freely, and the choral setting extends the underlying five-part texture, in which the choir's soloists create striking echoes, up to eight-part passages.

I had really become especially fond of this piece, although it is hardly appropriate for the so-called public; but I liked it..., wrote Mendelssohn about his setting of Psalm CXIV.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy set the 114th Psalm to music during a summer holiday in Horchheim near Koblenz in 1839. After the world premiere at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, he subjected the score to a thorough revision, altered all the tempo markings and, above all, added a considerable amount of new measures. The result satisfied even the notoriously self-critical Mendelssohn: I had really become particularly fond of this piece, even though it is hardly appropriate for the so-called public; but I liked it...The present Urtext edition follows the first prints which were published simultaneously in Leipzig (by Breitkopf & Hartel) and London.

Beethoven's Sixth Symphony (Pastorale) was written in the summer months of 1807 and 1808. The first performance of the work - along with that of the Fifth Symphony - took place on 22 December 1808 as part of a musical Akademie, or subscription concert, in the Theater an der Wien under the direction of the composer.Peter Hauschild's Urtext edition of the Pastorale is based on all the important primary sources: autograph, first edition of the parts (Leipzig: Breitkopf & Hartel, 1809), copies of scores supervised by Beethoven and, finally, the first edition of the score. Hauschild has combined source criticism and the requirements of performance practice while also keeping the Critical Report succinct and easy to grasp; this makes the editorial decisions easy to trace.Hauschild's new edition is based on all the major primary sources: autograph, first edition of the parts, copies of the score supervised by Beethoven, and the first edition of the score.

Johannes Brahms's only violin concerto, one of the most important violin concertos of the 19th century, is now a central repertoire piece. This fact is all the more notable, as, by his own account, Brahms understood all too little about the instrument. The concerto was composed at Worthersee during the summer of 1878 in collaboration with Joseph Joachim, a leading contemporary violinist. The solo part is extremely demanding, with really unusual difficulties. This circumstance did not go unnoticed by the critics of the first performance: Even to Joachim, the battled-seasoned wrestler, the technically difficult and tricky solo part was to be mastered only with obvious effort. Evidencing this close collaboration between composer and performer is not only the work's genesis and publication history, together with its dedication to Joachim, but also its solo cadenza. Based on the New Brahms Complete Edition, this Urtext edition includes both the printed version of Joachim's cadenza as well as its shorter version arranged in 1885 by the violinist Marie Soldat.

Comments from the composer: The 1st movement of my Trio, Allegro vivo. opens with a strong tutti rhythmic figure that repeats often throughout the movement. It’s followed by a syncopated ‘fuguelet’ that also repeats in many different ways throughout with lots of chromatic shifting. After a brief slow variation, the opening material returns with more power to end the movement. This 2nd Mov movement, Andante, opens into a wintery landscape with just the cello introducing the main theme, then the violin enters followed by the flute. The feeling of an arctic landscape gives way to the joyful warmth of summer, then the cycle repeats but with a climax of a thunderstorm finally ending with the silence of winter, once again. After the solitude and winter reflections of the longer slow movement, comes this energetic and warm response, Presto, with reassuring harmonies, a fast pace with lots of notes and perhaps a hint of a Latin American celebration of life! In 1941, I was invited by Viktor Vaszy to take on a choice double role, as a teacher of composition at the Cluj Conservatory as well as chorus master at the Cluj National Theatre. For me, this meant both an official state appointment and a substantial increase in my income. At the time I was over 35 years old and still without a permanent post. I took up my new duties at the end of the summer. My wife and I felt very much at home in Cluj but the most important for me was that along with my artistic obligations I found time to compose. Unfortunately we do not know why Farkas wrote in 1992 a new version of the Three Burlesques for clarinet quintet and for whom it was intended. The first movement Allegro, arc shaped, is more a succession of rhythmic patterns than melodies, with hectic ostinatos and staccato chords. In the middle of the movement, a short figure, like a second theme, brings a bit of calm and gentleness. The second movement, an expressive Moderato comodo and the final Allegro are shorter and also contrast with staccato chords.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Hafner Symphony K. 385 in the summer of 1782 on the occasion of the elevation into the nobility of his friend and patron Sigmund Hafner. Next to the well-known movements, this version (A) also contained the March K. 408/2 (385a) and possibly a second, no longer extant minuet. Called Hafner=Musique by Mozart, the work was unquestionably a serenade at first. In early 1783 Mozart then reduced the Hafner Music for his subscription concert at the Vienna Burgtheater on 23 March 1783 to a four-movement symphony. This is the form in which the work was first printed in 1785 (Version B). For a further performance, Mozart added flute and clarinet parts to the symphony. In 1805, this version (C) was published by Andre in Offenbach, who thus began making it known. The primary sources of the present Breitkopf Urtext edition are the autographs to K. 385 and K. 408/2 (385a). It thus becomes possible for the first time to play all three versions of the Hafner Music, since the variants of Versions A and B can be easily discerned through indications in footnotes and notes in small print.

Ludwig van Beethoven conceived his Seventh Symphony in the summer of 1811 in the Bohemian spa of Teplitz. The fair copy of the score autograph was made the following year. The work was heard for the first time on 8 December 1813 in the auditorium of the Vienna University, when the Seventh was given its first, enthusiastically applauded audition - together with the programmatic symphony Wellington's Victory or the Battle of Victoria op. 91.The present Urtext edition is the first to be based on the evaluation of all the sources transmitted for the work. The score contains the complete Critical Report. Observations deemed particularly important, as well as divergences from established editions, are clearly marked within it.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Breitkopf's source-critical, practice-oriented edition by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild will provide valuable new impulses in the interpretation of Beethoven's music. (Kurt Masur, 2006)This is the first new edition of the 7th Symphony for which all surviving sources have been examined. The examination brought up a number of text-critical problems with respect to divergent readings. (Peter Hauschild).
