Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. Symphonic Metamorphosis was commissioned by the Sierra Vista High School Symphonic Band, Las Vegas (NV). The composer was given free hand to choose the style of the new commission and originally planned to use the opportunity to fulfil a long-held ambition to write a set of variations on the famous chorale from Saint-Saens' Third Symphony (Organ); in beginning work he was so moved by the work's highlights that he decided to include more than just the chorale melody. Therefore, while Symphonic Metamorphosis starts out as an original set of variations for concert band, it is gradually subsumed by other elements in the symphony (particularly the slow movement), and the piece closes with a finale that has been reorganized and rescored from the majestic closing pages of the symphony.

Composed during the summer and fall of 1974, Barnes' FIRST SYMPHONY, Op. 35 was his master's thesis at The University of Kansas. It was premiered in the spring semester of 1976 by their Symphonic Band, Robert E. Foster conducting. The following year, the symphony was awarded the American Bandmasters Ostwald Composition prize, which led to a second performance (of only the first two movements) by the Northwestern Wind Ensemble at the American Bandmasters convention with Col. Jack Cline (U.S Marine Band) conducting. Following this performance, Barnes submitted the work to several publishers, all of which declined on the basis it was too long and difficult to be marketable. For this reason, Barnes set the work aside and there it remained until 2022, when an offer came from the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra to record all nine of Barnes'symphonies to help celebrate their 100th anniversary. Barnes seized the opportunity, engraving all four movements, with revisions and corrections, an effort that took seven days a week for two months to complete. As a result, after almost fifty years, all nine of the Barnes symphonies are finally available for performance.

Our oldest version of the instrument, Symphonic Gongs have a slightly raised surface (without boss) with a harmonic and universal sound structure. The fundamental note of the gong is balanced with the instrument's complex overtones. The characterizing word “Symphonic†thereby should not be misinterpreted as describing the literal sense of classical symphonic orchestra application but its original sense to unite harmonic sounds. The describing word universal shall be understood as “sound in its entirety.†The sound of these gongs can be influenced and varied through the nature of the stroke, as well as the size, weight, and composition of the mallets. By varying the striking points, highs, lows, and various sound mixtures contained in the entirety of the gong's sound sphere may be extracted and played up.
