Un Petit Cafe a Paris is a fun and engaging waltz that captures the atmosphere of a small Parisian cafe through the very recognizable style of the Bal-musette, which can often be heard throughout the streets of Paris. Inspired by the style of music brought to Paris by Auvergnat immigrants, and performed in small dance halls where waltzes were very popular. A refreshing and light-hearted happy piece that makes a fantastic addition to any concert.

Independentia March was first published in 1895. At least eight of Hall’s other marches were also published in 1895. He was living in Waterville, Maine, at that time, was thirty-seven years old, and had established certain principles in the composition of his marches. As demonstrated by Independentia, Hall’s marches were composed primarily for the typical community bands in the New England area around the turn of the century. If the prestigious military and professional bands in the United States and Europe chose to play his music (and they did), that was fine! His marches are gems of simplicity and understatement, composed of flowing melodies and countermelodies, contrasting dynamics, and occasionally an element of surprise – as in the two beats of silence (or bass drum & cymbal solos) just before the last strain of this march.

“Kenneth Fuchs's fifth Naxos recording with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by JoAnn Falletta won the 2018 GRAMMY® Award in the category Best Classical Compendium. Among the works featured on the album is Rush (Concerto for Alto Saxophone), which was commissioned by Ryan Janus, principal saxophonist of the United States Air Force Academy Band, and a consortium of saxophonists and ensemble conductors. The work is composed in a two-movement form, each about seven minutes in duration, connected by an extended cadenza for the saxophone soloist. The first movement, which begins with a short cadenza that introduces the thematic material of the work, is a rhapsodic Adagietto with transparent textures. The second movement, which begins with an extended cadenza that introduces blue notes into the harmonic language, is cast in the form of a jazz-inflected passacaglia with ten variations and a coda. Versions for orchestra and band are available from the publisher, as well as a piano reduction.â€.

Brass Quintet No. 1 was composed with great pleasure for the American Brass Quintet during the summer of 2000. It is cast in three movements. The work opens with a series of dramatic annunciatory gestures that serve to set into relief the faster, more angular, occasionally skittish heart of the movement. Both the beginning and the end of this core are framed by a long-held E-flat: two pillars that support and elevate the central part of the movement. The slow and quiet second movement can be viewed as a kind of lens or prism through which the music passes and changes. Pitches, then harmonies, are gradually brought into focus, then refracted - splintering off into more individual phrases (I was thinking here of the way light is split and bent by the prisms in our kitchen window). The end of the movement is characterized by a turn of the lens in the opposite direction as the music gradually blurs, then fades. The final movement begins with a bit of imitative counterpoint. The character of the music is initially unabashed and proud, but is quickly foiled by increasing speed - a frantic kind of stretto! A more playful narrative follows, though; this occasionally studded with sharp, percussive chords. A brief choral-like section provides textural contrast before the recapitulation, and the familiar E-flat pillar from movement one ends the work.

Miklós Kocsár wrote this work in 1993, it was commissioned by the artists Bea Berényi and her husband Ãkos Dratsay. It was given its premi?re at the end of that year at a concert of works by the composer. As the title indicates, the composer?s intention was to display the tone and colour potential of the two flutes. The overall form of the work is provided by the sequence of eight sharply contrasting movements of differing length. It is characterized by thematic correspondences, variations, formal arcs that gradually reach completion, different styles of playing, alternating slow and fast musical materials, free and fixed rhythms, as well as cantabile and virtuosic sections.

Composer John Frith has written a new solo virtuosic work for Bass Trombone with Piano accompaniment of about 3 minutes in length. Read below to see what his thoughts are about his composition for Jonathan Warburton. I have written a number of pieces (over many years) for Jonathan Warburton who also commissioned ‘Sons of Thunder' in 2015. Jon's gift for musical ‘acrobatics' gave me the idea of creating a short, high-energy work that would give vent to his exceptional range and flexibility. The central section is muted and relatively calm but it is not long before the music builds and the opening material returns. A solo cadenza creates a welcome calm interlude before the storm gathers once again as the piece builds to a momentous fortissimo before grinding to a thunderous halt!‘Sons of Thunder' is the nickname given by Jesus to the apostles James and John, possibly reflecting their lively characters……I'm guessing that theirs were not too unlike Jonathan's ebullient personality!.

The unbroken popularity of Vanhal's sole double bass concerto in competitions and for practice and concert purposes is reason enough for us to publish the work in Breitkopf Urtext. The edition profits from Tobias Glockler's experience of many years. As with the other great double-bass concertos of the classical Viennese repertoire (Dittersdorf, Hoffmeister), Glockler arrives at convincing solutions. He began by filtering out a solid musical text from the source (which was not always free of contradictions) that was supplied with many additions. The disposition of the solo part required detailed knowledge of performance practice, since the work was written in the historical Viennese double bass tuning, and a few passages cannot be played without difficulty on a modern instrument. As with Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, the piano reduction makes it possible to use three different double-bass tunings (solo, orchestral and Viennese). Moreover, it contains the editor's virtuoso cadenzas as well.I have performed the Vanhal in Viennese tuning and it was my thesis topic so I am thrilled to see an edition that makes this tuning so accessible. I highly recommend this all-encompassing edition. (Marian Heckenburg, Stringendo).

With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the sailing age. It was during the 16th to the mid-19th century where large sailing vessels dominated global exploration, international trade, and naval warfare. The piece's compound meter provides the pulse of movement as it pitches and rolls with the rhythm of the waves. The driving main melodies convey the determination and courage of the explorers and their crew. Dissonant harmonies suggest rough seas, turbulent weather, and other constant dangers that sailors must endure. Finally, the ending sweeping melody and climax reflects the joy and triumph at arriving on a new land at the apex of a long and intense voyage. With evidence of watercraft dating back to 8000 BC, travel by water has remained an important aspect of life to many civilizations. From paddling down a river or crossing a large lake, to steaming across an entire ocean, generations of humans have traveled on water to explore foreign lands, to seek food and precious materials, to move and trade cargo, and to attack and fend off enemies. With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the age of sail. Erschallet, ihr Lieder (BWV 172) is one of those early Bach cantatas which were often revived at Leipzig. The first performance of this work was given in Weimar 1714. Although only a few instrumental parts from this performance are extant, it may be assumed that at that time the cantata already had the form familiar to us from its first Leipzig revival. It was given in C major (church pitch, corresponding to D major in chamber pitch), and the first number was intended to be repeated at the end of the work.

The basis for the children's musical Israel in Agypten is the Biblical report of the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery by Moses. The work contains 12 songs with catchy melodies and texts suitable for children. In the arrangements, elements of pop, jazz, and classical music are joined. The scenes are supplied with many staging directions. The musical is fun for children and makes Biblical stories come alive. The music is funny, lively, and very catchy, so that the children bring home a new hit stuck in their ear or on the lips after every rehearsal. (Wurtt. Bl. f. Kirchenmusik 6/00) The children's musical Israel in Agypten is a successful piece of musical theatre ... Thomas Riegler shows that he has a sense for theatrical effect, not only with his music, but also with his text. The dialogs are funny, but never hard to learn. (Musik und Gottesdienst 3/00). With the publication of Volume 11 in November 1999, Werner Breigs fundamentally new scholarly concept of Richard Wagners complete letters begins to make itself felt more strongly. The meticulously annotated volumes are illustrated with facsimiles and little known photos. Further enhancing the value of this edition are a number of letters, which were hitherto practically unavailable and are published here for the first time. The commentaries are based on many previously unpublished documents.
Concerning Volume 10 (published one year later than Volume 11) we have obtained the following fax by the English Wagner expert Stewart Spencer, who wittily praises Werner Breig's fundamental new concept:
There is a general problem of reviewing such magnificent volumes. They are the yardstick by which all other writings on Wagner will be judged. It is like sending someone to inspect the standard metre rule in Paris and asking them to review it. All one can say is that it exists and that it is in a class of its own. I'd like to congratulate you on its publication and thank you most warmly for picking up this edition. (Stewart Spencer, October 11, 2000)

The cantata Sei Lob und Ehr dem hochsten Gut (All glory to the Lord of Lords) BWV 117 is one of a small group of Bach's chorale cantatas which use exclusively the text of the chorale, including in the three recitatives and three arias. Only the autograph score of the cantata survives; although this enables an approximate dating to be made (c. 1730), it does not give the occasion for which the cantata was written. The choice of chorale may indicate it was composed for a wedding. Recently it has been suggested that the occasion for its composition was the birthday of the Duke of Weissenfels in 1731; but there is no firm evidence to support either theory. The cantata opens with an extended movement for chorus in which Bach contrasts the concertante orchestra with festive, almost homophonic choral writing. This chorus movement is repeated at the end. A simple chorale movement which comes fourth indicates that the nine-movement cantata was performed in two sections. Score available separately - see item CA.3111700.
